View Full Version : OT - Backup software?

In one of the recent computer threads (either mine or someone else's), somebody mentioned a specific backup software they had very good experience with recently.

It would, IIRC, automatically backup files to DVD regularly, writing only anything that was new or had changed since the previous backup, and it would do it from whatever directory you specified.

Problem is, I can't find the thread where this was mentioned nor can I remember who mentioned it. Anybody remember? Or have suggestions (I'm looking for something that is as user-friendly, idiot-proof as possible, trying to automate the regular backup process as much as possible. Probably looking at going with DVD storage at this point).

Thanks in advance,
Jon

If you have 2K or XP the built in software would work, however I don't think it can write to DVD's. I'll look into this more when I have more time.

It doesn't write to DVDs by itself, but with Roxio Media Creator (as of version 6 at least) it will. I do this all the time.

I use Dantz' Retrospect to back up to an external hard drive. Those files can be copied to a DVD later.

Using Windows Backup just schedule "Incremental" type backups. This will backup everything that has been changed/created since the previous backup. However you can't backup to DVD. I have never used it with Roxio though.

Does Roxio integrate with backup or do you have to burn the backup file seperate?

Roxio turns the DVD drive into a writable drive, so you just tell Windows Backup to back up to the DVD drive, and it goes. You can also drag-and-drop files in Windows Explorer straight to the DVD drive.

I see, thats pretty nifty. If only they had 100gb writeable optical discs out there.

I use Retrospect as well. Set it and forget it.
