So I spent Wednesday through Friday in LA and Palm Springs. I've decided I like LA minus the shitty baseball team :) . Anyways, on Saturday and Sunday me and two friends headed to the lively city of Indio to take in alt-rock nirvana.
Saturday: We get there late. Extremely late. I didn't even bother getting any beer or food, because I would end up missing the rest of the bands I wanted to see.
U.N.K.L.E.- I don't really know what constitutes a good or bad show for a D.J.. I guess it was ok. Fun to dance to, but it seems like all they do is hit play and mess with knobs occaisionally.
Four Tet-See U.N.K.L.E.
Bloc Party-Britain's haircut of the month dance-rock band. Nothing too amazing here.
Weezer-Played a greatest hits interspersed with cuts off the new album. I really like what I heard from the new record, and I will definitely pick it up.
Bauhaus-The lead singer entered hanging upside from a wire a la dracula. That was the best part of their set. A lot of screeching guitars. I can see why they have a cult following.
Chemical Brothers-See UNKLE/Four Tet
Coldplay-They're esentially for the ladies. Most guys pretend to like them to get into a girls pants. I am no exception. Good string of hits. The new songs sounded ok.
SUNDAY: Spent a lot of time in the beer garden early on, trying to get nice and buzzed for my favorite bands.
Kasabian-Every song has the singer doing some variation of ""Ahhh-ahhh-AHHH"
The Bravery-Another hyped band. They want to be the next New Order, but will end up being the next Frankie Goes to Hollywood.
Tegan & Sara- Awww....How cute and wuvvable these Canadians are. I was pleasantly surprised by their songwriting.
the Arcade Fire- Holy cow!! I have the album, and it's good, but it doesn't come close to doing the live show justice. They have about 8-9 people on stage and they all go nuts...they'll all sing even if they aren't around a microrophone. The percussionists were climbing scaffolding and hitting each other with drumsticks. Oh yeah, the music was good, too.
New Order-Old guys who can still a good show. They played some songs off the new record, Bizarre Love Triangle, Crystal, Blue Monday, and even Love Will Tear Us Apart from the Joy Division days.
Nine Inch Nails-Reznor is pretty cool. I'm not a huge fan, but I enjoyed his 10 minute song about "fuck the pigs". I left before I got to hear the big hits, but NIN sounded like what a headliner should sound like.
British Sea Power-A band I never would have gotten into if I didn't see some of their live set. I'm not sure how to classify them, but it's definitely something worth checking out. Since most everyone was watching NIN I got to get close to the stage, which added to the intensity.
The Faint-Awesome live show. Everyone was dancing around like maniacs. They had really cool videos that went with every song. I definitely want to see them again soon.
Bright Eyes-He only played songs off of his Digital Ash album. I could tell some people who weren't familiar with BE were turned off by him. I don't necessarily blame them, but the twin drum attack and stage energy complimented his great song writing.
Who I wanted to see but missed:
Wilco
Rilo Kiley
Fantomas
Mos Def
Sage Francis
MF Doom
All in all, it was a fun show to go to. The weather was in the mid 80's but with a nice breeze. Perfect for Indio. They had some interesting art exhibits, with the main new one being about 100 trashcans that were designed by people like Hunter S. Thompson, Mark Hoppus, and some other folks (I don't know why Mark Hoppus stood out to me, but he did). If you have a chance to go next year, I highly recommend it.
