Was anyone else here a big fan of the Cyberball arcade game?

I'm thinking this is a game that is ready to be revived and updated for the new consoles, especially with online play becoming so popular. I think this game concept has the potential to be a big hit if done properly.

Or am I off my rocker?

I played this on MAME a couple of years back. I think it even had 2-player support. Still good times!

Loved that game.

I think it could be time to spruce it up a bit. Add some more management-type aspects and career aspects to the game, give it a little more atmosphere, and I think you've got yourself a winner. With EA sports gobbling up every football trademark on this planet (and others), it seems like it would be high time for another developer to go in this type of direction.

In a similar vein, a spruced up management/career type Bloow Bowl game would be grand. I know there was some recent PC game like that, Chaos League or something, but from most accounts it fell a bit short and installed some whacky-ass program on your PC making it a no-go from the get-go.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking.

I think the on-field gameplay is pretty solid - it's a nice impression of football while not quite being football exactly, which gives you the freedom to change things around for the sake of fun.

The graphics could obviously be updated in a major way, really get creative and in-depth with the mechanics of the robots, and you could go wild with the settings and really beef up the audio (though I'd still want to keep some of the original elements).

You could really play up the user vs. user aspect with online play, and emphasize league play and dynasty modes. There's great potential to really expand the resource management element of the game regarding replacing damaged robots and how much money you have to spend. You could work in customization of the robots to better suit your particular style of play while remaining within budget.

Man, I would love to be involved in re-making that game. I wonder what Atari, aka Infogrames would want financially to allow another publisher to license the rights to it...

I'll be in big trouble if a good condition Cyberball: Tournament Edition stand-up cabinet comes up for sale. I'd be hard-pressed not to buy one.

I always hated how i would save up a ton of money to buy improvements and they would last for 1 stinking game. But yeah, an update, if done correctly, would be studly. A new Tecmo bowl would be nice as well. Even if it went side to side.

While they're at it, go ahead and remake Speedball also.

Or at least give us a Deathrow sequel.

I saw that one already. Problem is it's the 2-player version, not the 4-player tournament version.

Though, for $700 I'm still tempted...

Tecmo Bowl is in a new classic arcade pack coming out for Xbox. It was talked about in the latest OXM.

They pop up on Ebay every now and then. I just don't have a place for one. A few of my buddies and I played all the time.

I loved blowing guys up.

It's still played online via MAME and Kalierra. There's a hardcore group of about 30-40 guys that have been playing each other for years.

Here's the link to their website.

As I have said before, I am willing to drive a great distance and buy the beer if someone wants to invite me to their home to play for several days :)

No kidding - I'll have to ask around the office to see if I can find out more about how the licensing of that title works...

Arch Rivals is on that list too...I loved playing that game. Punching the PG in the face so that you could steal the ball and then taking it all the way for a dunk was great...

Defender is one of my favorite games of all time. I remember pouring tons of quarters into the machine at the bowling alley that was down the street from where we lived when I was a kid. To have that on my psp is going to be golden!

Cyberball was also released for the sega genesis. More teams and divisions so you could play an entire season. Save up money then upgrade your WR in a key game. The only problem was player upgrades only lasted for that game. You can probably get it for under $700 though.

I used to play Cyberball on the Genesis all the time. It was a pretty fun game, but it really has the capacity for so much more...

Yeah, I might look at picking up a cartridge on eBay. I'd still like to have the tournament-edition cabinet though...

How about some MUTANT LEAGUE FOOTBALL? Which gave us such great features such as "Bribe Ref" "Kill Ref" and "Kill QB"(Before the play).

Cyberball was better than MLF with Bones Jackson and all.
