I have a Dell 8300 with a extremely loud (very annoying) CPU fan. Looking at the insides, I notice that the CPU fan is attempting to suck heat from the CPU heat sink (with a shroud in place) out of the case. Is my fan by chance in backwards ? Should the fan be suppling air to the heat sink instead of trying to take heat away ?

I unfortunately have no answer to your question. But I have to admit I leaped into this thread just to see what would compel someone to be a fan of Dell? :)

I take it your not a fan of Dell. I have been buying Dell equipment pretty much for the support. In fact, the 8300 was a replacement I got from them because the failed twice to fix a problem with my 4500. Any recommendations on other venders to look at in the future.

Actually I have no specific issue with Dell, and have never owned a Dell product. I just don't know that there are too many companies of which I would say I was a fan, beyond sports teams of course. For instance, I shave with a Mach3 razor, but I don't go around telling everyone I am a fan of Gillette. :)

The setup is correct. The fan should be pulling heat off the heat sink.
