I guess with Hockey season out, Canada had to do something right?

BANGKOK, Thailand - Miss Canada Natalie Glebova was crowned Miss Universe 2005 in Bangkok on Tuesday at the climax of a beauty pageant that once again managed to stumble into controversy.

Glebova, a 23-year-old motivational speaker from Toronto, succeeded last year’s winner, Australian Jennifer Hawkins, after the usual evening gown and swimsuit parades that pull in TV viewers worldwide but outrage feminists and traditionalists.

Even though hotly tipped for the title, the final announcement appeared to stun Glebova, who moved to Canada from her native Russia only 11 years ago.

“This is all happening too fast and it’s unreal. It’s slowly starting to sink in,” she told reporters moments after being crowned with the glittering, diamond-encrusted Miss Universe tiara.

Dressed in a long white evening dress, she hugged her parents on stage and then praised her new homeland for giving her and her family the chance to start a new life.

“When we came 11 years ago, we came with nothing, and now we’ve got so much,” she said.

Miss Puerto Rico Cynthia Olavarria, a 12-1 favorite according to on-line betting service Sportsbook.com, came in second.

In all, 81 beauties from Albania to Zambia made it to Thailand, riding elephants, touring temples and frollicking on tsunami-hit beaches in the run-up to Tuesday’s finale, which was broadcast live on Monday evening in North America.

In the middle of the show, the conference hall fell silent for a minute in memory of the more than 228,000 dead or missing from the Dec. 26 Indian Ocean tsunami. Nearly 5,400 of the victims were in Thailand.

The silence contrasted with some of the strident criticism levelled against the 54-year-old pageant in its earlier stages.

Photographs of bikini-clad contestants posing in front of Bangkok’s famed “Wat Arun”, or “Temple of the Dawn”, caused outrage among religious traditionalists who said they were an affront to Buddhism.

Indonesia’s first Miss Universe hopeful in nine years also sparked a storm back home in the world’s most populous Muslim nation with her decision to take part in the swimsuit part of the competition.

Even though 25-year-old law student Artika Sari Devi opted to wear a one-piece swimsuit rather than the skimpier two-piece bikinis favored by most contestants, conservatives reacted with anger, branding the pageant “pornography”.

In going through the slideshow, I saw that there was a Miss Puerto Rico. Why is she competing for Miss Universe? Can someone enlighten me as to what Puerto Rico is to the United States?

After looking at the pictures of the other contestants... they got this right. Venezuela was a close second.

I saw about five seconds of the show last night, and Miss Peru looked smokin'...

My wife & I watched about 30 minutes. It was pretty terrible, Billy Bush is an idiot.

Course most of the ladies were OK to look at :D

Then the photographs were very misleading.

Mrs. Q and I and a guest watched about the last 45 minutes of this for some reason, and got very into it. Miss Canada was, along with the runner-up Miss Puerto Rico, the worst of the final five in appearance. The other three finalists were among the best-looking of the contestants we saw (from the level of 20, I think) -- Miss Mexico was just gorgeous, Miss Venezuela had an absolutely killer bod, and Miss Dominican Republic was somewhere in the middle, also quite beautiful.

The picture above is very flattering of Miss Canada, who was clearly the woofer of the bunch. She also came off as the "smart one," which we found to be annoying as well. When they announced the order, and had Canada and PR as the final two, we basically were throwing things at the TV.

Miss Mexico was just gorgeous

I shoulda mentioned that. She was by far the best looking woman on stage I thought.

Wife and I just watched the brief stretch where they announced the final five. I was thinking it odd that all the selections came from North America until Venezuela was called.

Mexico, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Dominican Republic, Canada. Which of these is not like the others?

:D First thing I noticed after the pic.

And for those that don't know. The South American countries, especially Venezuela, really take this shit serious. They also get a good amount of surgery on their bodies just for this crap. Fake boobies and lypo....

She is also way too skinny and looks to be taking part in the over-sized merkin portion of the competition...

She's got pointy knees. Seriously though, who here thought Miss Puerto Rico was attractive? I thought her forehead could have been another contestant!

Good lookin' chick, but beauty queens don't much do it for me. They look like little dolls...

They should have a real competition and include stuff like wrist wrestling and the belching contest.

I thought Miss Mexico was beautiful, and while the others were pretty themselves, she got jobbed.

Although all I saw was a few minutes here and there in between the Spurs/Suns game.

A commonwealth. Essentially, a glorified colony without the voting rights that states get or the taxes they have to pay. The citizens there are all US citizens, but they have their own Olympic teams and such alike. It's a weird situation, but it's been that way for a little while now.

It ought to get resolved one of these days, but I don't think they'll ever become a state. Though..who knows. Seemingly too poor, me thinks.

That was me! :)

I liked the forehead. You need a place to set the beer while you are... never mind.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Both my wife and I thought Ms. Puerto Rico was smokin'. And Canada was good too, along with Peru. Venezuala and Mexico didn't do it for us. Seems like the judge agreed with us. Sorry, WH and QS, your taste in women is lacking.

By the way, the bikini pick of Ms. Canada . . . . . Wow! Better the second time around.

Two things for the ignorant among us:

1) What's "pointy knees" mean?
2) What's a merkin?

Thank you!

Ah...thanks for the clarification. Always wondered why Rhode Island, but not Puerto Rico. :)
