Jack Kilby died.
Most anything you do these days, you owe a debt to him.

Bah. Robert Noyce invented the microchip at the same time. In fact, Noyce is more directly responsible for the "invention" that we're using, because he went on to co-found Intel.

Bah. Kilby built and tested his first, and Intel would not be around otherwise.

Nope. Popular misconception.
Al Gore is a liar and didn't invent anything!

Depends on who's side of it you're reading. The bottom line is that we all use PC's with Intel (or Intel clone) CPU's - not Texas Instruments.
(yes, there are the exceptional Mac and Sun users on different processors - but let's leave the freaks out of this discussion)

West Coast Bias...
...and what chip you're using at the current time has nothing to do with the invention of the original. It is a byproduct thereof (though I have no problem, unlike Kilby and Noyce, who were in court forever over the patent, with sharing the glory for the two of them).

Nah... just an Intel bias... but, then again, that's who I work for. http://dynamic.gamespy.com/%7Efof/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif

Well the New York Times called him:
Jack S. Kilby, an electrical engineer whose invention of the integrated circuit gave rise to the information age and heralded an explosion of consumer electronics products in the last 50 years, from personal computers to cellphones, died Monday in Dallas. He was 81.
They also called him "Inventor of the Microchip", so being in first counted. ;)

I'm really sick and tired of all the dumbasses who take that Al Gore quote completely out of context

I gotta agree with that sentiment. It's not as if he said he invented the internet, as it was claimed- but he sure as hell did get a lot of the cash to get it off the ground. Both Cerf (re: "father of the internet", DARPA, TCP/IP) and Andreesen (re: Mosiac, Netscape) have both come out strongly in defense of the claim that Gore did help fund the research that let to the internet today.

John Atanasoff (http://www.maxmon.com/1939bad.htm) invented the digital computer.
