View Full Version : Wie has the lead at US Womens Open

She's poised to be in the final group tomorrow, as she was today.
If she wins, a lot of critics are going to say "see, that's why she needs to play with women." Then she'll play against men and all the cynics will hope she fails then too. I think if she's got the lead going into tomorrow, that a meltdown is unlikely.
I don't know if she'd come back from a meltdown today. Seems though most of other girls are playing poorly enough to give her cushion to just play her game.
Oh and the galleries are so much quieter and smaller at these women's events it seems. Though it looks like a large crowd there. They're just not as rowdy as I've seen on the mens' tour of late.

That shot she just hit to get close to the green was nice. She's going to be hard to beat. Unless someone can string together a streak like Karen Stupples did there with 6 consecutive birdies or something like that.

She will be stepping into unknown territory since she has never won anything at this level, and this is a little bigger than a regular LPGA event. We have no idea how she will react. The one thing I will say is that a meltdown would be far more likely to occur in this case than to a player like Goosen last week, and we all know what happened there.

True that. True that.
My only thing was thinking that, she's not going to have any pressure. Everyone expects her to fail. So I could see her going out there with her "youthful inexperience" and just playing the round like she would. Or that she'll be Tigeresque and will just go out there and dominate.
I do agree that this is where if she doesn't win, all that lack of winning experience will come into play, though she's obviously been close at majors before and has held up. She hasn't played in a final group at a major since she was 13 though.
If nothing else, it'll be interesting to watch. I think she'll have had a successful week if she holds off Paula Creamer (whose a pro now) and wins top amateur medalist honours over Morgan Pressel, who wants to beat Michelle Wie really bad.

This is my first time watching Women's Golf in a very long time (I'm interested in seeing how Wie reacts to the pressure.) I'm pleasantly surprised to see quite a few attractive ladies are in this tournament.

Paula Creamer looks determined. I wonder if one of the young guns or if one of the no-names will end up claiming this in the end.

Agreed. Same here. It's weird they play two majors separated from two weeks of each other. Seems wacky.

I don't remember how old Wie is. Is it bad that I'm thinking impure thoughts about her?

It's so weird with these younger players in these tournaments, because they have nothing to say about them. So they have to say things like "did you know what she got on her SAT?"

Wie certainly looks older than 15. I can't believe she is 6'2" or 6'3" at 15. Didn't she turn 15 fairly recently?

Oh, here's something interesting I found on the LPGA site.
http://www.lpga.com/entertainment_content.aspx?pid=4107
According to the June 15, 2005, Sports Business Daily, 15-year-old amateur phenom Michelle Wie has worn both Nike and adidas apparel this season. As an amateur golfer she is allowed to accept free equipment and apparel but is not allowed to be paid by sponsors, Some have speculated that when she does turn pro, Wie will be able to command around $15M annually in endorsement income. With Wie squarely in the sights of potential sponsors -– particularly Nike and adidas — THE DAILY lists the apparel and footwear she wore at the LPGA's second major of the year, the McDonald's LPGA Championship presented by Coca-Cola, where she placed second to Annika Sorenstam.
I didn't realize they got to get free equipment and clothes. I mean, it makes sense. I just didn't realize it, but figured there had to be some provisions for such things. I wonder if they can help with her other expenses too or if that's solely the province of her parents or if they can get money and use it on her.

I had to double take when I saw the title of the post. At first glance I thought it read "Wife has the lead at US Open". I thought lucky, rich bastard.

I hope Wie wins....She seems like a nice young lady.
AND hopefully with the victory pheraps a nice rivalry will form between her and sorenstan and the Womens game will rise.

Wie is at +5 today, after melting down so far. Morgan Pressel, the other amateur has the lead.
It's over for the Big Wiesy, unless she's gonna start playing aggressively and make a Tigeresque comeback. But she's not known from coming back when playing down.
This is not so good. Though she might argue that it's more important for her to win against the men when she plays the Men's Pub Links. I dunno, I tend to think winning is winning and winning is good.
I think I'd rather see Morgan Pressel, the top ranked amateur woman out there get the win versus one of the other no-namers at the top.
Annika is at +9.

That said, I think that this could be a good lesson for Michelle. But the experience of the other amateurs is showing today, because they're not melting down under pressure. I still don't think that's an endorsement for her to play junior golf events, especially since playing PGA and LPGA events now makes her far more marketable for when she does go pro - and whether people like that or not, it's a smart business decision.
Women's golf isn't like men's golf and so she wouldn't have had the Tigeresque impact that she's having now, if she was just playing junior events. We'd just hear about her and that'd be it.
I think her meltdown today is a huge learning experience for her. Even beter than if she'd had held on and won. It'll force her coaches to evaluate and let her adjust accordingly.
She's still ahead of Annika, the gold standard in women's golf. Though she's not doing herself any favours of late.

No doubt.
Nice shot for Michelle on 18. I hope all the haters don't try to talk too much smack on Michelle for not playing well today. I mean, she's got plenty of golf left in her and I think it's fitting if Pressel wins, seeing as she's the youngest player to ever qualify at age 12.
If nothing else, it's been a good weekend for Women's Golf.
And niiicccee shot by Birdie Kim on 18. We got a tournament folks.
I think Pressel is gonna pull it off. If she's got the game, let's see it now.

I'm kidding. But seriously, what are they trying to do in our American major championship. What would the US Open in tennis look like if they TRIED to make it harder for people to win it?
I mean, I know it's golf. But damn.

Michelle tied with Annika for 23rd at +12.
I'm sure the LPGA is really happy that an amateur didn't win.

Apparently, Michelle Wie's 82 in today's final round was her 2nd worst score ever on the LPGA tour. With the way she makes cuts and stuff, seems to me that if she was gonna flub it up someplace, here was the place to do it. Not because she was in a position to win, but more becuase there were lots of others who had the same problems.
