I hate yardwork sometimes....

Just the standard rant...

We moved into this home last sept. with a lease option...we have decided we will take the option when it kicks in next sept.

Which brings me to the yardwork...The former leasee's of the home had two big dogs that tore up the back yard, and they never took care of it...so there are these nasty ass puncture vines (Also known as goathead weed) all over....which is sad as I am finally getting grass to grow....

Anyways, the only approach I am able to do is to get as much of the goathead as possible, then till it, spray it with weed killer, then, after a week, seed it or sod it...with everyone telling me to sod....

Well, I started the tilling today, and In 3 hours, I was able to get 1/4 of the backyard done....Damn, I haven't tilled in years...my shoulders and back is killing me now...

Anyways, 3 or 4 more days of this, and it will be decision time...

I am leaning towards the Xeriscape as it is limited water upkeep, but it also fits into the spanish style backyard we want to do....

Exactly what I was thinking.........I mean if it would STAY done and not just be in virtually the same condition next week, month, year, etc I could understand. But I pull weeds this week, next week or month they are back again and they've brought their friends. Wife enjoys it - I can't stand it.

I definitely enjoy having a townhouse where the only work I have to do is plant a few things in the small beds in front and back.

great fun to clean that up ;)... so.. about 1/2 acre of grass to grow.. yippee!

I have 3 dogs in the backyard. 1 great dane/rott mix, 1 great dane, 1 rott/lab mix. With a lack of watering and them, it is just about gone. One corner of it seems to actually be sand now, as it is one of their heavy walking paths. What sucks is there is a sprinkler system in the ground, but it is a joke. Not sure what they were thinking when they put it in, as it is a complete waste. The sprinklers do not cover half of what it should, and constantly watering the backyard is not high on my list of things to do when I am home.

Sunday I took down a dying tree. Carried the tree trunk to the front yard and dropped the damn thing on my foot when I set it down. Thing must have weighed about 100 lbs., foot still hurts. Yard work sucks.

I am thinking about turning this into a dynasty as well.....now that football is over....

I have had decent success with growing grass, but after a couple of weeks of rain, the last couple of weeks have made the weeds go out of control..

A LOT of what helped me was getting an aerator for my tractor.. many places I am only growing grass where those holes are...

Doing a fall planting rather than a spring planting should help a lot for me later this year too..

It's why I am seriously considering Xeriscaping mine....

I am looking at the initial start for watering is that of a normal yard, but one it has settled, your watering is down to once a month, but it works where we are at because of the climate.

Why not a moat? Hire a guy to sit there on horseback in a suit of black armor with a lance, and post a little sign on the other side of the moat that says "Beware of Black Night".

Just found out this weekend that Black Walnut trees are toxic to tomato, cucumber, pepper and bean plants...

Of course, found that out when half my garden wilted and died off..

What sort of tiller are you using? I just bought a 6hp rear-tine tiller about a month ago, and I got my entire garden tilled in about 15 minutes. I think if you'd spend some money on a decent machine, you'd have an easier go of it.

I was thinking of strapping up the great danes like a mule and having them pull a plow. That 6hp rear-tine tiller might be nice though.

You are probably correct there....as I am using the in-laws tiller, it looks like it is from the 50's or 60's....

Just call the Police or FBI and let them know you have reason to believe that Jimmy Hoffa is buried in your backyard. They will come and dig everything up, and when they find nothing, stand there with a confused look and say, "huh, would you look at that? He wasn't buried here after all."
