Tommy Banks hated the cold.
He also hated the barren, wide-open plains, the dirty sky, and the general depression of the place, but most of all, he hated the cold.
"I don't understand, Gregory. Why do I have to begin my Division I coaching career *here* of all the godforsaken places?"
Gregory Thomas, Tommy's butler and general personal assistant, coughed and cleared his throat.
"I believe, sir, that being caught with your last employer's two teenage daughters and five of their friends in a hottub in the nude had something to do with it."
"...Bah! What does that have to do with it? I'm not Mark Chmura, you know!"
"Quite so, sir."
Rubbing his temples and doing his best to resist the migraine that was marching, monolith-like, into his temples, Tommy sighed and closed his eyes, the better to not have to look at his offending surroundings.
"So Greg, when can I get out of this gig and move on to something better?"
The butler frowned and looked over the clipboard he held in his hands, "I am afraid it will take some time, sir. You see, more prestigious schools will require you to do well here before they allow you to take control of their teams.
Tommy snorted and waved a hand, "To hell with that! I'm not planning on doing a damn thing in this shithole. I have assistants; they can do what they're paid for, which is to do everything so I don't have to do it.
Biting back a chuckle, Gregory nodded, "As you wish sir. However, might I advise that in order to alleviate the boredom that will of necessity arise out of a post of this nature, that you indulge in a bit of whimsical fun?"
"...What?"
The clipboard was held up, flipped to another page.
"I have here sir, five high school seniors chosen at random from this year's recruiting class. I thought it might be fun for you to track their college careers and see how they do in the NFL, should they reach that level of play. You'll notice I've taken the liberty of providing you all the initial information on the players, including our staff's assessement of them."
"Eh.. what the hell.. I got nothing better to do. Give me the clipboard."
"As you wish, sire."

"...Great, so you're having me watch a bunch of high-rated kids from superior athletic high schools who all have wonderful character?"
"That would be the sum of it, sir."
Tommy snorted as he stood up and strode for the door, "To the hell with that. Maybe I'll look later when some schools go for them or something."
His manservant arched a finely manicured brow and watched him go, "And just what where might you be going, sir?"
"Off to go bang some hot Eskimo chicks, of course!"
"Inuits, sir."
"...What?"
"Inuits. They prefer to be called Inuits."
"Bullshit. I say they're Eskimo chicks and I'm gonna have me some damn nice Eskimo pies to eat! Don't wait up for me Gregory... I won't be back tonight."
Gregory sighed as the door slammed after Tommy's smirking instructions.
Life in Fairbanks, Alaska was going to be very trying indeed.

"I say, Gregory old chap, is Tommy around?"
"I'm afraid not, Master Downey. May I be of some assistance to you in the meantime?"
Wesley Downey shook his head in reply as he absently checked to make sure his hot pink, white polka-dotted bowtie was in place, using the room's full-length mirror as an aid.
"No, that's quite all right, chum. I just wanted to drop off the care package I brought for him while he's in Hell here, but that's okay. I'll just wait until he gets back. Err.. do you know when that will be?"
Gregory eyed Wesley warily, "He should be back in an hour or so. I believe he went to a party being given by the president of the university to welcome him to Fairbanks. If you don't mind, Master Downey, I should like to inquire as to just what this care package contains."
The visitor shrugged with a low chuckle, "Oh, just the usual, really. Three cases of wine, the complete collection of Girls Gone Wild, five boxes of Cuban cigars, some caviar, and two Playboy Playmates."
"....I see. Well, the wine and cigars you can have put in the cellar, the DVDs can go with the rest of them in the right-hand cabinet of the entertainment system, the caviar goes in the kitchen, and I suppose that Thomas would prefer the two ladies in his bedroom."
Wesley grinned and nodded, "Sounds good. I'll have the girls help me out with unloading the stuff. Oh, that reminds me, I've dropped off the Top 25 preseason rankings. I figured Tommy boy could get nice and depressed over the schools that won't let him coach there."
A smile slid on the butler's face as he accepted the paper, "Excellent, Master Downey. I will look forward to seeing the green-eyed monster when my employer views this list."
"So will I, old sport, so will I."

"So did we win last week, Gregory?"
"There were no competitions held between any schools, sir. That being the case, it would be quite difficult for anyone to win or lose."
Tommy shrugged as he took a puff of cigar, exhaling a cloud of smoke into the air as he swirled a glass of wine from the stocks Wesley had brought a few days earlier.
"Eh, whatever. I don't care. Damn it, where the hell are those sorority girls? They should have been here by now. I'm going to be pissed if the kegs I've got set up go to waste."
"I highly doubt they will go untouched with your proclivities for alcohol, if I may say so myself, sir."
The unwilling coach of Fairbanks' football team snorted as he sipped from his wine glass, setting the cigar in the tray on his chair's right arm.
"Always the joker, aren't you Greg? Well, what's the latest with those goody two-shoes players you were telling me about?"
Gregory slid the clipboard that had been in his hands for the past five hours into Tommy's lap.
"Right here, sir."

"Heh, what a bunch of fucking idiots. They're all going after the lower-ranked cornerback. What do you think our chances are of landing the top corner in the country?"
"About as good as your chances as being hired to coach the Michigan Wolverines tomorrow, sir."
"Real funny, jackass, real funny."
"I think it's only fair, Banks."
"...Shut up and get me some more wine."
Gregory smiled slightly and bowed before turning with a flourish to exit the room.
"As you wish, sir."

"Tell him I was sick with pneumonia. It's so damn cold up here, he'll believe that excuse. Damn it, where are those sorority girls?"
"I believe they're at a fraternity house, sir."
Tommy cocked an eyebrow as he rubbed at his sore temples, "A frat house huh? What fraternity?"
"Lambda Lambda Lambda, sir."
"Huh. Never heard of them. Anyway, go tell the AD I was sick, will you? And do you have the latest updates on those kids?"
"Indeed, sir. Here they are."

Nice catch of the joke, Mr. Bug ;)
And yeah, I find it amusing how many look to have the potential to go to Michigan. It's like almighty's dynasty all over again. :D Except in this one, it doesn't look as though Tennessee will have the presence amongst the recruits.

The master of the house was at a frat party not involving the Lambda Lambda Lambdas, and Gregory was out doing the grocery shopping.
On the table sat the latest reports on the recruits.

Still Winless Fairbanks Falls To Wake Forest 51-0
The headline stared up at Tommy, but he didn't bother reading the article. Annoyed, he tossed the paper to the side and glowered at Gregory.
"What the hell is this? If my assistants can't do their job, then they need to be fired! I've never started a season 0-3."
"Perhaps if you coached the team yourself, sir, you might have better results."
Tommy snorted incredulously, "Right. Like I'm going to freeze my ass off working for this podunk school. I'll just have to hire new assistants next year."
"You told the AD that he could hire your assistants for you, sir."
"Well I changed my mind! You got the latest reports on those boys?"
"Yes sir. Here there are."

42-3 was an acceptable score if you were in double digits. Sadly for Tommy and Fairbanks University's football team, they had the 3.

Texas All-State Cornerback Al Mighty Signs
It's that time of year, when the early returns of the hard work NCAA football head coaches do during the recruiting season are delivered.
A good number of suitors today received answer from All-State cornerback Al Mighty from Kingwood High School, Kingwood Texas as he announced the college he'll play the next four years at.
At a press conference this morning, Al Mighty declared that he would be signing... with Boston College to play for the Eagles.
The news sent shockwaves throughout the college ranks, as it had been strongly believed that Mighty wanted a prestigious school above all else and speculation had him signing with either Michigan or USC.
Al would not give a definite answer when asked B.C. over Michigan and USC, but said that he would comment later.
The All-State cornerback enjoyed a successful senior season, finishing with 58 tackles, 4.5 sacks, and 15 interceptions in 9 regular season games. Unfortunately, his high school career ended on a bittersweet note, as his Kingwood Mustangs fell in the quarterfinals of the Texas 5A state playoffs.
Competition at cornerback is expected to be somewhat fierce in Boston, with no seniors graduating and a pair of promising underclassmen in sophomore Ronnie Luce and redshirting freshman Irving Farr.

Nation's Top-Rated Running Back Signs
California All-State running back Colton Mayes, who many felt should have been named to the All-US team over statemate Mercury Jamieson, held a press conference today to tell the world where his heart lies for his college career.
Starting next year, Colton will be suiting up for... the Stanford Cardinal.
It was another suprise selection, one even more puzzling than the Al Mighty signing. Not only did Mayes look headed to the far more prestigious schools he seemed to prefer in the form of Michigan, UCLA, and USC, but his academic record did not suggest that he had the abilities necessary to even successfully apply to Stanford, let alone do well in the classroom there.
The NCAA is considering investigations into Stanford's recruitment of Mayes, as anonymous allegations of infractions reached the association's offices.
Despite being snubbed for the All-US nod, Colton had a brilliant senior season, getting the coveted double-double by finishing with 1,782 yards rushing and 1,077 yards receiving and 18 combined touchdowns.
Making it even sweeter was the fact that he led the Foothill High Cougars to the state title, making a pair of dazzling touchdown runs in the championship game and making a touchdown catch in finishing with 205 yards rushing and 58 yards receiving to go along with the scores. He was named Player of the Game for his efforts.
A look at the running back situation for Stanford sheds some light on why Mayes may have signed with the Cardinal. With three seniors graduating, there will be significant opportunities for playing time and Colton's only real challenger at this point looks to be sophomore Richard Lucio, presently the number two back in Stanford's depth chart.

Michigan All-State DE Danny Wilson Declares
At a press conference today, Michigan All-State defensive end Danny Wilson announced that he would be staying in his home state and playing for... the Michigan Wolverines.
It was a decision that finally made sense to watchers of the college football recruiting game after stunning choices by the nation's top running back, Colton Mayes, and All-State Texas cornerback Al Mighty, who elected for Stanford and Boston College respectively.
Wilson started his senior year strong but tapered off at the end of the year, something that spelled doom for his South Lyon High Lions as they fell in the regional final of the state playoffs. Still, his 89 tackles, 12.5 sacks, and 3 interceptions were impressive enough stats that he garnered quite a bit of attention from schools across the country.
Playing time will be extraordinarily difficult for the second-ranked state prospect, as Michigan's defensive ends include a junior, four sophomores, and a freshman, all with All-American potential, save for the junior, who is merely very good, both in terms of his potential and his level of development.

Illinois Top Prospect Verma Commits
All-State defensive tackle and top ranked Illinois prospect Sunny Verma announced today that he will be staying home for his collegiate career and playing with... the Northwestern Wildcats.
Northwestern's exceptional education program was cited as the main reason for Verma's signing with the school.
A solid and steady contributor, Verma amassed 85 tackles and 7.5 sacks in Downers Grove South High School's nine regular season games. Unfortunately the Mustangs missed the playoffs as they finished with a 4-5 record on the season.
Playing time will come down to a game of numbers, as the Wildcats have four defensive tackles, all of whom will be coming back next year. On the plus side, none of them are very good, so Verma may well get some time as a freshman.

Nation's Top-Rated Cornerback Kappe Commits
All-Texas cornerback Kyle Kappe of Cy-Fair High School in Cypress, Texas, the country's most highly rated cornerback, announced today that he will be spending the next few years playing for.. the University of Texas Longhorns.
Despite missing a game with a minor injury, Kappe was a key presence this season, finishing with 47 tackles, 4.5 sacks, and 8 interceptions in just eight games played. His leadership on defense proved vital, as the Cy-Fair Bobcats reached the sectional final of the state playoffs before they fell.
With two key seniors graduating in Austin and a desperate need for corners on the Longhorns squad, the prospects for Kappe's being in the mix as a true freshman are quite good, even if the remaining corners are solid.

Will Kappe's arms be as long as his Horns when it comes to getting to the ball?

The rest of the season sped by fairly quickly, culminating in a championship game between Ohio State and USC, which was won by the Buckeyes 24-21 in a thrilling game decided by a last-second field goal.

Oh, just a quick question... which option do you select when exporting draft files from TCY to FOFC again?

In 2004, the Super Bowl champions were the New York Giants, spearheaded by a rejuvenated Kurt Warner, as the quarterback regained his former Rams magic and showed he still had it.
Warner's two touchdown strikes ensured that his Giants defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 27-14 in the NFL's title game.

Final regular season standings for 2004 season
In a peculiar circumstance, all of the college players eligible for the draft that year declined to enter it, as they joined a rogue league starting up in Europe.
(In other words, somehow the draft file didn't export properly and I'd already saved on to the next season in TCY)
On to season 2 we go.
