View Full Version : EHM: The New Great Debate

DeToxRox

Since the last World U-20 Tournament, people (namely American's) have been very vocal in their love of Phil Kessell, and rightfully so. Kessell has it all, and played like a seasoned vet even though the American team played horribly. Soon the debate waged on, who is better.. Sidney Crosby or Phil Kessell?

It's America vs Canada yet again, and now I'll find out.

Using my EHM Hurricanes game, I am going to start comparing the two players. Crosby will reach the NHL first, with Kessell a year behind him. I presently am in January of my game, so we have a bit of a ways to go to see who wins the Crosby lottery, but next year, I think we'll have our own Kessell lottery.

The great debate starts pronto.

USA vs Belarus

USA 6 Belarus 0

Phil Kessel sat out the first game of the tournament nursing a day to day injury from a game with the US National Development Team. His absence from the lineup was barely noticable as the Americans rolled.

Canada vs Sweden

Canada 5 Sweden 0

Sidney Crosby showed his ability to be an all around player, logging the most time of any centers (23:13), yet not contributing any points. He was still +1 and recieved a 9 rating. Crosby was 13 of 26 on faces for an even 50% rate, and had 6 shots on net.

USA vs Russia

USA 5 vs Russia 3

Kessel's first game was a success as he notched a goal, and finished with an 8 rating. He was +1 for the night, and logged the second most ice time out of any RW'ers, as he is slowly being brought along in the US lineup.

12.28.04

Finland vs Canada

Finland 1 vs Canada 2

Crosby didn't have his best game in any regard. He was only rated a 7 for the night with an even +/-. He did log the most ice time of any Canadian forward yet again with over 18 minutes. Yet the numbers don't matter because the Canadians escaped with a hard fought 2-1 victory.

USA vs Czech Republic

USA 6 vs Czech Republic 3

Kessel was huge for the US, notching 2 goals and an assist and going +2 in a First Star effort vs the Czech. He also saw his minutes go from 16 to 19, showing his health is in tip top condition.

Canada vs Slovakia

Canada 6 vs Slovakia 2

Crosby had his own big game, with a goal and an assist for Canada. He was a plus 3, and logged over 23 minutes of ice time. His performance earned him the Third Star as Canada approved to 3-0 as well.

Germany vs Canada

Germany 4 vs Canada 3

In a game all of Canada would love to forget, the Canadians lost a heart breaker to the Germans, and in doing so, giving up a bye in the tournament. Crosby notched a goal, and but he was even for the night. He earned an 8 rating none the less.

1.2.05

Switzerland vs USA

Switzerland 3 vs USA 3

Kessel was knocked out of this game early, and it cost the Americans. Reaggrivating his bruised thigh, Kessel left after scoring a goal, and being +1. He earned an 8 rating for his play in his short time in the game, but the lack of Kessel killed the Americans.

USA vs Finland

Canada vs Germnay

Canada 6 vs Germany 1

Canada got its revenge and more in the rematch. Crosby was third star with his 2 assist performance, logging over 25 minutes of ice time and being a +3. With the win Canada advanced to the gold medal game to take on the Fins, while America will take on Germany for the Bronze.

The Canadians put their two best games together when they needed it most, as they steamroll the Fins this time 6-2. Crosby has 2 assists but manages a -1 rating. Still, he again logged the most ice time of any Canadian forward, at over 26 minutes while playing LW.

Some notes while I sim..

The Jackets have the sickest young line in the NHL in Nash/Crosby/Zherdev.

Zubov is perhaps the most dynamic player in the draft with a 20 already in Creativity and will be a guy I think will do some damage.

Bourett helps my team out tremendously. A future lineup of Staal/Bourett/Ladd is quite intriguing.

My second third round pick was Brian Lee, the HS Defensemen from Wisconsin who played in this years U-20 tournament. I am excitied to see how he developes.

Meanwhile, the Columbus Blue Jackets fall to a lowly 26th.

Ahead of Rick Nash .. That's impressive.

Their key new addition? Marc-Andre Fleury who was aquired in a deal for Danny Fritsche, a prospect and a 2nd round pick.

And in another classic between these two teams, the Swedes pull out the victory in overtime. Crosby played 12 minutes, was + 1 and had an 8 rating but it wasn't enough as the Swedes captain, Peter Forsberg scores in OT to push the Swedes past the Canadians. Iginla was second star with two goals, but it wasn't enough.

Another classic that is won by Lethinen in OT vs the Russians. Finland/Sweden is shaping up to be a good one as they have the two best records in the tournament.

GOLD MEDAL GAME

Sweden 4 vs Finland 3 (OT)

What a game! The Swedes down 2-0 in the 3rd get 2 goals from Henrik Sedin in 24 seconds to tie. Then the Fins went back and scored to give them a 3-2 lead, but once again, the Swedes come back with 6 minutes left to tie. My Carolina Report: Since I've fast simmed thus far trying to get Kessel into the NHL, I've realized I need to control the coaching aspects too, since a broad gameplan has lead my inept team (which has no talent on the pro roster, sans a few player) to a measley 35 point campaign.

This should land me the top spot in the draft. I'll be torn (if I win the lottery) between Kessel or Frolik from the looks of it. My goal now is to have an up tempo style of hockey, and Kessel does fit that mold fairly well. Andrew Ladd has torn up the WHL and will be on the Canes team next year, and the same can be said for Alex Bourett, who is playing well in the Q. Ladd/Bourett/Kessel (or Staal) could make this up tempo style plausable. Needless to say, it'll be interesting to see what happens next.

Wow is it painful to see computer AI outperforming our actual front office. Bringing in a top notch D prospect after drafting a potential top tier center, what are they trying to do, make the Oilers a legitimate threat to get to the second or third round in the playoffs? The nerve!

Checking out the Oilers (who missed the playoffs)

They went for the youth movement.

Their D is anchored by Komisarek and Phenauf.

Schremp had a decent year with roughly 50 points. Not bad for a rookie.

They just have a lot of geling to do. Their oldest player is Todd Harvey at 31 so it's no surpise they were 10th in the West.

2006 NHL Entry Draft

#1 - Nashville Predators - C, Bryan Little (Saginaw, OHL) [ISS #3]

Thoughts: Looking at it now, Little might be the #1 player in the draft. He tore up the O and has a lot of very solid ratings across the board.

#2 - Carolina Hurricanes - C/RW, Phil Kessel (Minnesota, NCAA) [ISS #2]

Thoughts: Upon looking at the #'s, Frolik started worrying me. His 3 balance was a major deterent. Nolan wanted him, but my Assisstant GM and Head Scout said we should go with Kessel and I can't say I blame them.

#3 - Minnesota Wild - RW, Michael Frolik (Kladno, CZE) [ISS #1]

Thoughts: Frolik is either going to be a star or a massive bust. Technichally, his ratings are the best in the draft. Everything else however leaves a lot to be desired.

#4 - Anahiem Mighty Ducks - G, Semyon Varlamov (Kingston, OHL) [ISS #5]

Thoughts: Top goaltender prospect. Played on a horrible team in Kingston, where he was 15-29-2, but he had a GAA of 2.29 and a save % of .934 which is not bad at all for such an awful team.

#5 - Chicago Black Hawks - C/RW, Peter Mueller (US National Developmental Team) [ISS #6]

Thoughts: Maybe the top player in the draft. He had __209__ points for the US team, racking up 113 goals and 78 assists. Again though, as a whole, Kessel ranked a bit higher on my board. He was #3 to me, but I think the Hawks got a steal. A damn steal, even at #5.

Heh, looks like the Oilers certainly shouldn't be having cap problems anytime soon. Staios, Jason Smith, Ryan Smyth, Brewer, Moreau, York or Dvorak anymore, talk about a cash dump.

Wish they would have kept Smyth and Semenov though.

I forgot to include the Oilers first round pick.

#10, Edmonton Oilers, RW Aleksandr Vasyonov, (Yaroslav, RUS) [ISS #10]

Thoughts: An 18 year old who is a lot like Zubov. He can play off the puck and can put the puck in the net. The only question is he is out at least 4 months with a torn ACL, so it'll be a wait and see as far as his productivity goes.

Zubov, playing for Swift Current in the WHL, was dominate.

71 GP, 75 G, 76 A, 151 PT, +72, 8.07 rating

Won several WHL awards and was a CHL All Star.

He has signed with the Oilers.

Hemsky had 17 G and 17 A for the Oilers. Not bad consider the lack of offense the Oilers had.

Anything else, lemme know.

DeToxRox
07-10-2005, 05:34 PM
As far as how Hemsky looks. He'll play wing with either Schremp or Zubov. He has the look of a potential 30 goal, 30 assist guy. Playing with those guys he could end up doing a lot of damage.

DeToxRox

Kessel has signed with Carolina. A three year deal worth 1.3 mil a season, and an outrageous 2 million dollar signing bonus. Yet I had to do it because I need all the help I can get. There is a player and team option that could set him up for 5 years. Alex Bourett (6th overall pick from Crosbys draft) will get signed soon enough too, and with that my top 4 wingers (counting Staal) will all be under the age of 22.

Well...I guess you could take the 20 strength rating to indicate that, for somebody of his age and size, you couldn't get any stronger.
