ODESSA, Mo. — A fast-moving tour bus on Interstate 70 plowed into two tractor-trailers before overturning Wednesday evening, leaving 12 injured and snarling traffic for hours, the Missouri Highway Patrol reported.

According to the Highway Patrol, the accident occurred when the bus, westbound on Interstate 70 east of Odessa, swerved to avoid a slower-moving tractor-trailer. The bus slid off the right side of the road, then swerved back onto the roadway, sideswiping the truck. The impact sent the truck, which was in the left lane, across the median into the eastbound lanes.

The bus continued moving, hit another tractor-trailer and overturned. It came to rest across the median, jutting into the eastbound lanes. Debris from the impacts struck four other vehicles, including two motorcycles.

“I bet that bus was probably doing 85,” said Breck Wyngarden, the driver of the first tractor-trailer struck. The bus primarily damaged the skirting of his cab on the right side. The trailer appeared largely unscathed.

“I was just trying to keep on the road,” Wyngarden said.

He said he was uninjured, though his wife was brought to an area hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

“She got tossed around,” he said.

The severity of the injuries suffered by other motorists was not known Wednesday night, although three or four victims were taken to hospitals by helicopter.

Among those injured, three were taken to Independence Regional Health Center, two to Liberty Hospital, three to St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, one to Truman Medical Center and two to Lee’s Summit Hospital.

It was not clear which vehicles the injured came from.

The bus was on its way from Chicago to Denver and might have carrying a musical act

Chicago-to-Denver bus in crash; 12 hurt

Associated Press
Published July 14, 2005

ODESSA, Mo. -- Twelve people were taken to area hospitals Wednesday evening after a tour bus traveling from Chicago to Denver crashed on Interstate Highway 70, the Missouri State Highway Patrol said.

Authorities said the bus was westbound on I-70 near Odessa, about 25 miles east of Kansas City, when it went off the road and then back onto the highway and hitting a tractor-trailer. The bus then hit another semi and overturned.

The collision sent the first truck across the median and into the eastbound lane, police said.

Police did not believe any of the passengers were seriously injured, but several were taken to hospitals by helicopter.

Debris from the crash struck other vehicles, including two motorcycles.

Tour Bus Collides With 2 Semis On I-70

Officials said a concert tour bus was attempting to pass a vehicle on eastbound I-70 near Odessa when the bus swerved out of control, crossed the median and collided with two westbound semi-trailers.

Witnesses said the bus was traveling at a high rate of speed.

All 12 of the injured were taken to nearby hospitals; three of them had serious injured and were airlifted. No names or conditions have been released.

KMBC's Kris Ketz reported that the bus belongs to a Florida company who said the passengers were members of a music group who have opened for rap artist Eminem. The bus was traveling from Chicago to Denver.

A portion of I-70 was shut down for more than two hours while the wreck was cleared.

<!-- begin body-content --> ODESSA, Mo. - A tour bus for rap star Eminem crashed Wednesday night, sending 11 people to the hospital, including Eminem's DJ, his bodyguard and rapper Stat Quo.

The rapper from Missouri whose real name is Marshall Mathers III was not on the bus, and a show planned for Thursday night in Denver was expected to go on.

At least seven people on the Anger Management Tour were sent to the hospital, the Missouri State Highway Patrol said. The report listed four other people, three on motorcycles, who also went to the hospital.

The patrol said the bus was westbound at about 6 p.m. on I-70 near Odessa, about 25 miles east of Kansas City. It was headed to Denver from Chicago, where the tour performed Monday night at the Tweeter Center.

The patrol said the bus was traveling at a high rate of speed when it ran off the road to avoid a collision with a semitrailer, then swerved back onto the roadway and hit the truck. The bus then hit another semitrailer and overturned.

One of the truck drivers estimated the bus was traveling at 85 to 90 mph.

Among those injured was Eminem's DJ Alan Maman, also know as Alchemist, who was taken to a hospital with moderate injuries. The 27-year-old from New York City was listed in good condition Thursday.

Stanley Benton, 26, a rapper who goes by the name Stat Quo and is considered one of Eminem's proteges, was treated at an area hospital and released. He was scheduled to perform Thursday in the show, which featured Eminem, 50 Cent, G-Unit, Lil Jon & the East Side Boyz, D-12 and Obie Trice.

A spokesman with Interscope Records told MTV the crash will not affect the remainder of the tour or Thursday's concert in Denver. He said Stat Quo could possibly take the stage in Denver, but a replacement for DJ Alchemist was being sought.

A friend of mine was working at the scene doing first aid. She said a couple of people were hurt pretty bad and went by helicopter to the hospital, but she didn't know who they were.
