USA's Chelsea Davis hits her head on the board during a preliminary round in the women's three-meter springboard diving competition at the World Aquatics Championships Friday, July 22, 2005 in Montreal. Davis required stitches after hitting her head. (AP Photo/Ryan Remiorz)

I can barely watch diving competitions, due to this sort of thing. I know it's rare... but it really weirds me out. Seeing this shot didn't help.

Yeowtch. At least it was the springboard...

Props to the photog that saw it coming and snapped at the right moment.

Ryan Remiorz, this slightly chilled tap water from the water fountain that I put in this kind of cheap company-provided insulated cup with a metallic look is for you.

She's ready to receive though.

I recently saw the picture above while reading an article about the incident, and thought to myself: "I don't really need to see that video", only to look up and see exactly that being shown on the TV news. Ouch, squared by two.

She couldn't have scored very high for that dive.

I'm happy to hear that her only medical issue after that was needing stitches. IIRC, a competitor has died after hitting their head doing a dive from the 10m platform.

Wouldn't surprise me - I'm pretty sure the 10m platform is solid, as opposed the springboard which is built to flex. That's why she only needed stitches and didn't suffer more severe head trauma.

typically solid concrete...

In my younger days, i used to do inward dives and have come close to hitting the board.. I think once, i reached out to stop my face from impacting the board.

Damn. That's not good, but I'm glad to hear she only needed stitches. That could've easily been a nasty concusion/skull fracture.

BTW, Didn't Greg Louganis do something similar in the 90's?

Fonzie: yes, it happened during the olympics If I remember correctly...

Thanks Airhog.

And Subby, this is perhaps the most perfectly titled thread in the history of FOFC. Well done.
