On gamenight he said that T.O. has alienated fans because he is a black athlete and hey this is America.
Keep in mind SAS that Kenny ORgers is White and I dont think fans are too high on him unless my ears decived me at the all star game.
Or how about Bill Romo when he ended that one guy's career in training camp...what color is he?
its SAS' perpetual use of the race victim card that sends tolerant people like me jumping on the "SAS is an idiot" cart. Athletics is probably the most evolved aspects of society when it comes to race relations yet his persistant abuse of the race card makes moments of prejudice or racism lose their importance because he has cried wolf so many times.
I guess Kellen Winslow didn't do anything to alienate his fans either...I mean, its only cuz he's black and has nothing to do with the way he rode that bike and would cryptic statements to the press via Sr. etc.
such horse manure...

Wasn't TO black last year when he first came to the Eagles? Man, they practically had a parade here in Philly to welcome him to town. Now we don't like him cause he's black. Right.
Stephen A. Smith is an ass, and he always has been since he started writing for the Philadelphia Inquirer. He's the sef-appointed race police for sports, always on the lookout for some racial injustice - whether it exists or not.

Well, duh. IT took you that long to figure this out? The Philly fans are racist. Look at how they booed McNabb and wanted that white running back instead. . .

such horse manure...I heard this interview too. Im sick and tired of SA. Smith always making it THE BLACK MAN against THE WORLD. Gimme a break. I make $ 30,000 per year as secretary and (sometimes)active duty reservist and also a full time student. Im damn good at all 3 and really need the money. Do I bitch and moan about it.....no. Both SAS and TO just need to grow up and shut up.

That's because, to put it bluntly, you aren't worth more to someone else - the free market gives you the right to leave if you are. You lack T.O's skills- the market doesn't value you. Your saga has nothing to do with him.
While Smith is of his rocker, I think much of America still has problems accepting black players who aren't yes men- who are "flamboyant" or confident.Sports Illustrated, for one, is still the bastion of the " aw shucks mid western all-american boy" market in the magazine, though it has been changing. Now, that's clearly not an issue with all black players, but there is a lot of white america that is uncomfortable with young confident black men with money - look at the pissing and moaning regarding the NBA about high schoolers (and the NFL's limit) - while there's no problem with baseball, tennis, golf, and hockey. Did you hear anyone argue today that Sidney Crosby should go to college and not make money for 3 years ? It may well be correlation, not causation, but I think its fairly naive to argue that race plays no factor in this - it may not be huge, it may not be the biggest, but it does exist. Now, the cocky self-assured attitude may be another factor - but that's another tangent.

Bullshit....2 words Jose Canseco or Mark McGwire or Jeremy Roenick or Kenny Rogers...Curt Schilling...Jason Williams (This represents ALL sports) .many American's are tired of his and their antics and all of them are white. Our country, when it comes to sports, is an equal opportunity "we are tired of you" country. When you play the race card when it doesnt apply you lose the right to play it elsewhere, when it truly is warranted. The above characters are all white and America is tired of them too, so if youre going to say TO is getting looked at differently you are simply reaching and are ignoring the other white characters (perhaps for you to buy this argument you need to ignore the facts).
BTW I do agree that the current contract system in the NFL is unfair but you need to blame the NFLPA equally for that. This doesnt give the right for TO to say he is holding out for his family when, as Colin Cowherd put it, he lives by himself while his son lives with the mother of his child, elsewhere. "Family Man!!!"

Will you please spare me this garbage? We hate confident black men? Are you F'n kidding me?
I hate to break it to you, but we hate cocky ass white guys too. What do you think the fans reaction would be in the country if Ben Roethlisberger announces he's holding out tomorrow? What do you think the reaction would be if he also decided to call one of his former college teammates gay and made some comments insinuating that Hines Ward wasn't really all that good and that he'd make any WR look like a HOF?
Stop pretending TO is some innocent 8 year old. He knows what he's doing. He wants attentino and he does whatever he can to get it. And while his skills make him a highly sought after athlete, his mouth costs him money. (lets not forget the Ravens would have likely given TO a much larger contract than the Eagles last year, but he was too busy calling Ozzie Newsome a racist to bother listening to any contract offer)
If TO wants to open up his trap and act like a spoiled 3 year old, that's fine by me. He has ever right to do that. Just don't tell me that I'm racist because I happen not to like it. And don't tell me the rest of the country is either.

Hold on a goddamn minute- I didn't call anyone a goddamn racist. I said that I believe race may well be a factor for some (ergo the "correlation or causation" comment), and if so that it may well be a small one, compared to percieved cockiness and arrogance. In fact, I explicitly stated that its probably true for a sub section of black atheletes. Nonetheless, there have been some fairly interesting pieces out there (sportswriters and sociologists) on the concept of the "Angry Black Man" in sports - some are horseshit, others are worth reading. Moreover, why the fuck do people object when some kid jumps to the NBA or the NFL , without a peep about the other sports ? Why do we keep hearing about the NBA driving away its "suburban" audience ? Regarding T.O, the guy risked his frigging career for the Eagles (by playing in the Super Bowl, against medical advice) - can't blame him for wanting to be rewarded for it. Shit, I think T.O can be an asshole (I am a 49ers fan, and I thought that the Garcia crap was repulsive), but that doesn't change the fact that the NFL system is awful.

It's still garbage. If you want to talk about the difference between the professional drafts and discuss if race plays a factor in that, more power to you. That's not what's happening with TO.
And I don't give a damn if he risked his life for a drowning kid. . . he signed a contract last year. He inked a 7 year deal. Nobody held a gun to his head and forced him to take the signing bonus or the 49 million dollar deal. Sign the one year deal, become an FA and do what you have to do.
Thing is, the outrage from people doesn't just center on the contract. Most people would agree (even the ones who are adament the Eagles should just let the bastard rot) that he signed an idiotic deal and he's worth more. Problem is, when you decide to throw your starting QB under the bus, start mentioning your name and Jesus in the same breath, and proceed to go on a bridge burning spree with both the fans and your teammates. . . you kind of lose the 50/50 crowd.
Race doesn't come into play on this one. The race card deserves to be played in certain cases. The bad part for everyone (and especially black people IMO) is that it's getting used far too often in improper situations. Then it loses its meaning for when it really should be used. That's a damned shame.

I'm not racist, I hate everyone equally.
PS: I've never heard of Steven A Smith. But then again, ESPN1 and ESPN2 channels have about as much use to me as channel 48 (which just turns my TV off for some reason when I go to that channel)

IMO the only reason he wanted to come back in the Super Bowl against advice, was so he could use it as ammo. since he knew he would be holding out. You may not be playing the race card but when SAS makes that "lil" remark, it is definitely insinutaing that the correlation is there when it certainly is not. I LISTED many exceptions that prove it is false, but I guarantee the race card will continue to be played over and over when it isn't due (which hurts those that can cry foul when it is the case) because it is better for the press to play the victim.

Can someone answer the question of "Why do people bitch about players leaving early for the NBA, but nobody mentions it when 16, 17, 18 year olds go pro in hockey, baseball, and soccer? I realize that this isn't racism, as people like Freddy Adu and countless black baseball players have gone pro right out of HS and even before. But why is this stigma only related to basketball?

Basketball doesn't have a minor league system like the those other leagues. Now, they have the new development league, but it really hasn't been stocked with any top notch talent.

The basketball players leaving directly after HS are only receiving what the market will bear. I don't think anything is wrong with that.
Top baseball draft picks get huge contracts out of HS too...
