And here's the newest Merchantmen Player of the Year Poll!

QB Louie Flannery - #14 - age 26
After the amazing 13-3 campaign, Flannery was touted as a hot upcoming quarterback in the league. Lacking the talent of a superman, Flannery had a slight drop in production in the 2008 season. Flannery is a pocket passer and was pressure more than before due to injury woes on the offensive line. But with 213 yards per game and a 21-14 touchdown-interception ratio, he didn't struggle too much. A knee injury kept him in a backup role for two games, with the team going 1-1 in those games.
RB Joseph Schoen - #21 - age 26
As last-minute trade acquisition, Joseph Schoen was written in as the new starter, despite Randy Harris' best season ever in 2007. 'The Shoe', Schoen's nickname, began the season as the change of pace back and only saw his number of carries increase significantly in the second half of the season. With the team's only 100-yard rushing performance of the season, Schoen contribute as the part-time starter. With 4 running and 4 receiving touchdowns, the backup runner and premier punt returner ended the season as the Merchantmen's leading touchdowns scorer.
WR Devin Henson - #83 - age 27
Still remembered for his two special teams touchdowns in the humiliating 20-40 loss at the Paris Musketeers in the 2006 season, Henson made his mark as a receiver as well. With a franchise record six receiving touchdowns, Henson played has best season as the #4 receiver so far. And with 706 yards, an average of 28.2 and 1 score, Henson was once again one of the elite kickoff returners in the IHOF. If for one, Henson forever ends the discussion on whether a guy who can only return kickoffs should deserve a roster spot.
DE Omar Gougeon - #74 - age 25
Drafted late in the fourth round of the 2006 draft, people wondered whether Omar Gougeon could ever be a good replacement of All IHOF second teamer Harold Wells. After a season if riding the bench, Gougeon was promoted to starter in 2007, but missed most of the fun due to a broken hand. But 2008 was Gougeon's season. With a team leading 8.5 sacks and an additional 6 blocked passes and 18 hurries, Gougeon played a very nice supporting role to the top defenders. And with 3 fumble recoveries and 1 defended pass, Gougeon showed he can make big plays with more than just his pass rush ability.
DT Charles Gomez - #78 - age 29
The anchorman of the Merchantmen was back at it. Active in 1,034 defensive plays Gomez was strong on defense all season long. With 78 tackles, 7.0 sacks and 28 hurries, Gomez made a case for being an All IHOF selection for the fourth year in a row and accomplished that. Add 3 forced fumbles and you see Gomez helps forcing turnovers as well. But with a salary cap figure almost $4 million higher than the next best paid player on the team, a top performance is the least to be expected from him.
MLB Cody Cluff - #50 - age 27
Almost silently Cody Cluff came one tackle short for the century. Cluff was active in all games, but was pulled out more often than before on passing plays. It resulted in a season with 99 tackles, 29 assists and a game with both a sack and an interception. With 2 picks, Cluff moved up to third on the all-time interceptions rakings for the Merchantmen. Additionally, Cluff set a career high in single-season defended passes at 8, despite playing less plays in the pass defense.
OLB Bernie Surry - #56 - age 24
Picked late in the fifth round, rookie Bernie Surry was expected to be a backup player, at best. After becoming a breakout player in training camp, Surry took the starting role and lead the team for a good partion of the season in defended passes. In the end, Surry did lead the team in interceptions (4), in fumbles recovered (3), in defensive touchdowns (2). On top of that, Surry was third on the team in tackles (72), assists (24) and fourth in defended passes (10). Surry seems to be a serious contender for defensive rookie of the year honors.
CB Tai Wayne - #47 - age 25
Tai Wayne didn't play a great season, but he played a good season never the less. In 12 games, Wayne missed some time with a broken hand, he made 2 interceptions, 13 defended passes and allowed only 24 catches in 425 passing plays. With just four games where Wayne allowed more catches than he defended passes, he proved to be the shutdown corner he's been advertised to be. If only he could stay healthy for 16 games...
SS Lincoln Gilmore - #41 - age 28
'The survivor' survived the season with some minor injuries, but managed to start all 16 games. Lincoln Gilmore lived up to his nickname and was all over the Merchantmen defense more than ever before. The strong safety was co-leader in interceptions (4), made 59 tackles, 20 assists and defended 11 passes. All league honors may be far-fetched, but after the 2008 season Gilmore is worthy to be mentioned as the Merchantmen defense's backbone, together with Charles Gomez and Cody Cluff.
