Bush weighs in and supports teaching Intelligent Design in classrooms.
Great! Let's make American kids even dumber! Intelligent Design should be taught in a philosophy class. There's no scientific basis behind it. It's basic premise is that the universe is too complex to develop naturally.
Now's my big chance to get the Flying Spaghetti Monster taught too! (hxxp://www.venganza.org/)

I've always wondered, shouldn't it be Intelligent (Christian) Design?

I read this title and thought Bush was in support of a universal ID card for teachers. Was confused.

Changed for your pleasure!

Its stupid of course, but why does science scare these people so much ? I've known some extremely religious people who are scientifically inclined, because they understand the Bible as metaphorical, and subject to interpretations by people.

Intelligent design should be taught at the home if Christians want it taught to their children.
The most ignorant thing I've seen is where parents have pulled their children from class when evolution is being taught. My ex feels this way because the "dinosaurs are tricks of the devil to make us believe that God doesn't exist".
I think that God created the dinosaurs and it's not hard for me to believe that evolution was also a creation of God. Of course, I may be off my rocker. ;)

what happened with the custody thing?
sorry for the threadjack but it just seems more important to me than rehashing the ole BubbaWheels' staunch stance thread.

I go to court on the 12th to determine if I get temporary custody.

While I don't believe in Intelligent Design and don't really think it should be taught in public schools (though if it is, you should just teach every theory of the creation of the world, even those crazy ones), but what I don't exactly follow is how the theory of Intelligent Design (Christain style) logically leads to a belief in the Christian God? I mean, the Christian God creates the world, leaves it along for billions or so years, turns his attention back on the world for a few thousand years, pretty much focusing all of his energies on one tribe of people in one part of the earth, and then pretty much disappears after that.
I am not trying to argue against a belief in God and don't mean to be disrespectful (despite the flippant tone (I am just pressed for time)), but I am really curious at how the connection between the two concepts is made.

I guess this isn't really surprising, disappointing, but the guy is pretty consistent.

Dude, you can believe the Spaghetti Monster created dinosaurs (and even lived in their bellies and cooked apple pies in there and fed it to baby dinosaurs and that's how they made their egg shells) and evolution if you want! That's all good, so long as you don't try to force it on others, which you don't. :)

Bush used to call the religious right the 'extra chromosome set'. This is, along with gay marriage, just a sick pandering to them. I think he had to do something to make up for Frist's flip-flop.

Well, given that he has little or no power over Frist and co anymore -I doubt that.

I do believe that Intelligent Design states that the earth is thousands of years old, not billions as the scientific community has evidence to back up.

From what I have read, there seems to be 2 factions in the Intelligent Design compound. The first think the earth is at most, about 6,000 years old and the second think that the earth is indeed a lot older than 6,000 years.
The whole concept of ID is flawed...For example: if you follow their 'theory', the Intelligent Designer would have to have had an Intelligent Designer, who would have to have had an Intelligent Designer and so on forever. It's just like one big loop. Of course none of that matters when you are throwing a bunch of scientific words out to someone who really isn't educated in the sciences. No different than a lawyer or a doctor using latin to layman, sounds smart, but what does it really mean?
Just my 2 cents.

I was watching some Christian science show where some priest was talking about Intelligent Design as if he believed everything science told us (evolution, age of the earth, etc.), but that it just had to be ID because of the near impossibility of life existing on earth without some guiding hand. That was the school of thought I was trying to get at, because I can respect it.
This other nonsense about the earth only thousands of years old and going against everything science tells us is a bunch malarkey and horse pooey. Not really worth the effort discussing issues on this topic with those folks for the most part.

This is basically my view on the matter. The problem with teaching it in schools is, whose version of ID are you teaching? It seems to me you either have to teach all of them, which would just end up being a waste of time, or none of them.

Interesting- Rick "All gay people are into Bestiality" Santorum came out against teaching intelligent design today, suggesting it didnt meet the criteria for "science". I thought Bush would be less of a lame duck then Clinton, because of the unprecedented power he brough the GOP, but I guess it isn't working here.
