View Full Version : Holding out hope for Jeb Bush or Elizabeth Dole

The 5 presidents thread made me realize--there has never been a presidental election in my lifetime that did not involve a Bush or a Dole on the Republican ticket:
76--Bob Dole as VP
80--George Bush I as VP
84--George Bush I as VP
88--George Bush I as Pres.
92--George Bush I as Pres.
96--Bob Dole as Pres.
00--George W. Bush as Pres.
04--George W. Bush as Pres.
Here's hoping that Jeb or Elizabeth find their way unto the ticket in '08. I don't know what I would do with myself with a Doleless and Bushless election.

Why do I fear that this thread will rapidly devolve into sophmoric humor about bananas and shaved snatch.
Oh. Maybe it is because I just posted that. Doh!

I knew as I was typing Bushless that the thread was over. But there really isn't more to add to my point. Better sophmoric humor than sophmoric political debate.

There is the possibility there will never be a Bushless or Clintonless President or Veep in some people's lifetime.
80: Bush as Veep
84: Bush as Veep
88: Bush as Prez
92: Clinton as Prez
96: Clinton as Prez
00: Bush as Prez
04: Bush as Prez
08: Jeb as Veep
12: Jeb as Veep
16: Jeb as Prez
20: Jeb as Prez
24: Hillary as Veep
28: Hillary as Veep
32: Hillary as Prez
36: Hillary as Prez
After 2036, I'm sure Chelsea or one of the Bush twins will be ready to take over.

And that's how long it will take to get a woman president. :)
My post was in jest. Obviously I'm not funny today (or any other day, for that matter).

You fail to recognize the impact the first true third party will have on the election in 2016. The Albino Vampires from Space party will drain support from both the Republicans and the Whigs...

Not if Condie runs. We could have had a black president already if Powell had run, and could have a black female president if Condie would run. The trick is, they have to run from the right, not the left.

True.
The Dems would not run a black candidate for Prez or VP, because it could scare off some racist votes.
The Reps could because they would pull a great deal of votes from the Dems (aka the "Black" vote.) The racists that vote for anybody with a "R" next to their name would grit their teeth and vote for the "R" anyway, since to them a conservative "nigger" is still better than a "nigger-lover." (In other words, the policies would still be closer to what they believe in.)
edit: I'm not saying that people who vote Rep are racists. I'm speaking of the voting of those who are racist on both sides of the political spectrum.

Don't most candidates run in circles?

Given the current condition of the electorate, it is very likely in the current environment that a minority candidate would have to be a Republican to win, until demographics shift to the point that a Hispanic candidate could win California, Texas, Florida and the Southwest without breaking a sweat.
At this point, I think it is almost a certainty that if a minority were nominated for president (perhaps even vice president) by the Republicans, a prominent far-right Republican (think a Pat Buchannan type) would run as a third-party candidate. This person would not run a racist campaign -- the campaign would be based on some fringe values treasured by the Reform and Liberterian candidates -- but the effect would be to siphon off votes in much the same way that Ralph Nader siphoned off votes in 2000 and to a much lesser extent in '04.

You certainly did tip-toe right around that position though.

Last time I checked, white folk vote for Republicans and Democrats.
