S. Korean man dies after 50 hours of computer games

SEOUL (Reuters) - A South Korean man who played computer games for 50 hours almost non-stop died of heart failure minutes after finishing his mammoth session in an Internet cafe, authorities said Tuesday.

The 28-year-old man, identified only by his family name Lee, had been playing on-line battle simulation games at the cybercafe in the southeastern city of Taegu, police said.

Lee had planted himself in front of a computer monitor to play on-line games on Aug. 3. He only left the spot over the next three days to go to the toilet and take brief naps on a makeshift bed, they said.

"We presume the cause of death was heart failure stemming from exhaustion," a Taegu provincial police official said by telephone.

Lee had recently quit his job to spend more time playing games, the daily JoongAng Ilbo reported after interviewing former work colleagues and staff at the Internet cafe.

After he failed to return home, Lee's mother asked his former colleagues to find him. When they reached the cafe, Lee said he would finish the game and then go home, the paper reported.

He died a few minutes later, it said.

South Korea, one of the most wired countries in the world, has a large and highly developed game industry.

That's wonderful. I'm sure Hillary Clinton and her cronies will use this ridiculous news to push their "videogames are the bane of society" agenda.

One day, some one may pass away from being on FOFC for 50 hours+. I hope if that happens we name the board after him in his honor.

And we must all cross out fingers that every single MP league Jeeber is in do not all start their offseasons in the same week.

I once had a 20 hours session while playing Civilization (the original) because my PC was acting buggy and I couldn't save the game I was playing...

I went to bed and slept for 12 straight hours after I'd finished...

We should raise a statue to this guy. or something...

Tenacious D already wrote a song about him. I urge everyone to give a good listen to Lee tonight in remembrance of this man.

Sadly enough, in Korea ... this happens quite often. I hear it probably 2 or 3 times a year.

Crazy!

If this guy would have survived and came over for dinner, I would have bowed to him. (and then hid my ps2 and pc)

Weakling. A friend of mine played Fallout for 60-something hours straight (I've forgotten how many now). Then we took him away from his computer to the dining commons and he passed out at dinner but that's not important.

I sat at a computer for 72 hours straight writing Java code to make a project deadline for a Computer Science class one time. I drank 72 "Simply Great Tasting Sodas" during the 72 hours. I was practically hallucinating afterwards, and slept for 26 hours. It was crazy.

I can't do that. I have to rest every 20 or so hours of coding. You can deal with a certain amount of mind mushage but at some point, you just cease being productive.

Yeah, it was pretty insane. The code was rather worthless -- the fact that I had done the work for two of my four group mates got me the grade more than the code I wrote did.

I stayed up about 30 hours straight finish up a couple of major programs right before finals one quarter at Ga Tech. I drank an entire 12 pack of mountain dew(because it had more caffeine!!!!#!!#!#!@#!!) during the marathon. I probably spent about 25 of those hours at the computer. I was also 19 or 20 years old. If I tried to do that now the results would be quite terrible I'm sure. Hell i'm not even sure I could pull an all nighter if i had to right now. I'm such a pussy.

Mountain Dew tastes like piss and I know so many people who love to drink it.

My drink of choice was to hit up a gas station here with my trusty big gulp cup- 44oz, i think, (for refill price) and get pepsi. They had both vanilla and cherry shots you could add so I'd throw in some of that and maybe some Dr Pepper if I figured I'd need the extra caffeine.

Why is he getting all this respect? Doesn't the fact that he had to take naps take away from this accomplishment? I once played TCY for 300 hours straight with 10-hour sleeping breaks, 1-hour eating breaks, 5-hour trip to bar breaks spread out in the middle and I didn't die.

Wait, you're right. I missed that part of the story. He took naps on his makeshift bed *and* still died. Lightweight.
