I was wondering what the "best" online poker site is? Also, one that potentially gives away free poker chip sets when you sign up, deposit money, and play a few hands..

Thanks fofc.

it's really tough to say. Are you looking for cash games or multi table tournaments?

I don't know the differences... Multi-table takes longer?

yeah

cash games are when you just sit at a table and play, you can leave when you want, if you bust you can get more chips and keep playing.

Most sites offer sit and go tournaments where it is a 9 person tournament and the top 3 places get paid. Pokerstars offers the best variety of these.

Multi table tournaments do usually take a long time. these are the tournaments that are like the ones on TV with hundreds and sometimes thousands of people. Pokerstars also has a variety of these fro $1-$500. Most sites also have a wide range of these. The thing I don't like about Pokerstars is there are so many people in these it is such a crapshoot.

That being said I like Absolute Poker. Lemme know which one you are gonna join. I hope this helps.

The free chip sets, etc. never come from the poker sites themselves....you usually have to sign up through a third-party site that has established themselves as an affiliate for multiple sites. You earn points for each site you sign up for through them which you can then use to "buy" goodies.

A couple that I've used and would recommend:

hxxp://www.ecasinodeals.com

hxxp://www.pokersourceonline.com

There are others as well, but I can't speak to their quality.

Poker stars has the best tournies

Ring Games
Party Poker has the worst players, but the varience there can make you pull your hair out.
Prima/Ladbrokes have a general population of weak tight players.
Pacific has terrible players, but you can only play one table at a time. I don't know if they've changed this, but it was the last time I played there.

Sit and Go's
Ultimate bet and Poker Stars- timed levels and you start out with 1500 chips (might be 1000 on one of those sites)
Party-Blinds raise every ten hands and it becomes sort of a crap shoot in the final four. Plus you only start with 800 chips
Prima- Don't play here for SnG's. Blinds escalate at an insane rate meaning that the whole game is a crapshoot.

Not sure of your intent...

Just as a note, other than the basics and showing you that when you keep crap that you often don't hit anything on the flop, you aren't going to learn alot doing play money.

I just want to see if I'll play for an extended period, and to get used to the software before I use real money.

Also, I've read that in order to get the free signup items, you have to play a certain amount of raked hands in a certain time period... with school starting in two weeks, now might not be the best time to start. :)
