I guess I need to sign up for that Do Not Call list again, because I'm getting 10-15 telemarketing calls a day (7 days a week).
But today I got one from area code "172", calling on behalf of the "Junior Police League" (I heard these are scams, but they've called me weekly during the whole time I was on the DNC list).
That's an international area code, I think from Minsk,Belarus or Chandigarh, India (the woman sounded Arab or a little Russian or Australian[??]).
What bothers me is they call me by my first name, as if they're my friend. Which means my name is on some list getting passed around like a 19 year old at a frat party.

You should find out about your citiy's laws about that as except for certain 1st Amendment exceptions that's against the law in many places.

Add Call Intercept.
What pisses me off is that I now have an obnoxious NYer who claims he knows everything about college football and NFL, and he guarantees me locks if I just call him back ASAP. Its a recorded message.

Many telepests now disguise their phone numbers. If you have the right equipment, you can send anything you want over Caller ID. It's illegal to do that, but the pests have learned that the government just isn't interested in enforcing the No-Call List, despite its popularity.
I can't stress enough how dumb it is to respond to any telemarketing pitch, charity or otherwise. First off, if you buy from a telemarketer, you're going to get added to a "sucker list," which means you'll get hundreds more calls.
Second, the most popular telemarketing scam is to pretend you're raising money for a worthy cause, then pocket everything. Usually, they pretend to be some local police or fire fund, because many people just donate a small amount to those groups on impulse, whenever asked.
Finally, if you do have the desire to contribute money to a cause, do so directly. Never go through a telemarketer. On average, only 15% of the money raised through telemarketing goes to the charity. The other 85% goes straight into the telepest's pocket.

Lots of companies have located their call centers overseas these days...I wouldn't be surprised if that's why you're getting an international number.

We haven't had much trouble with telemarketers of late. The FTC's Do Not Call list seems to be working. We had one company, a debt collection company, that called at least once a day. I came home once late on Friday and listened to the message. I got the call back number and called them back. I got answering machine and left a long, angry message about how I was on the "Do Not Call List" and how I would report them immediately if I ever got one call again and a bunch of other angry-type stuff.
Never heard from them again.
