This is about the recent soccer victory the United States had over the Mexican international team. Pretty funny quotes in this article.

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexico's coach Ricardo La Volpe described the United States as a little team which his grandmother could play for following his side's 2-0 defeat on Saturday, local media said.

"It's a little team," La Volpe was widely quoted as saying following the World Cup qualifier in Columbus, Ohio.

"Here, everyone's interested in baseball and American football and many people didn't even know that a soccer match was being played today.

"So it's easy for them, because they aren't playing under any pressure. My mother, my grandmother or my great grandmother could play in a team like that."

The U.S., who have 18 points from seven games in the final stage of the CONCACAF qualifying competition, booked their place at next year's World Cup with the win.

Mexico, unbeaten in their previous 14 qualifying matches and two points behind the U.S., still need one point from their final three games to qualify.

"They scored a goal and then they sat back," said Argentine La Volpe.

The match had been preceded by a slanging match, sparked by an interview which U.S. striker Landon Donovan gave to Spanish language media in his country.

Donovan said the Mexicans were jealous of the U.S., always out to humiliate them and he wanted to make them feel miserable.

After Saturday's match, Donovan was in no more conciliatory mood.

"They suck," he said. "I'm so happy. After we got that first goal they were never in the game. Hopefully that will shut them up for the next three or four years."

Wow, Donovan minces no words does he. "They suck". LOL

The sad reality for Team Mexico is any player good enough to shred our defense have already done so and work for Team Walmart for the better pay and benefits.

Um, didn't we score another goal less than 5 minutes later?

Before the earlier qualifier at Mexico, I gained a little respect for Jared Borgetti.

He talked about how the US team plays like "robots" and even in the face of adversity they are the most organized team in the world.

His compadres are giving his soccer country an awful name, now, though.

That's funny, I lose a little respect for Borgetti every time I see him play. He's worse than Carlos Ruíz.

i enjoyed the comments by the US players, especially Donovan after the match. They were a bit cocky, but I think we've earned the right to be cocky. Certainly moreso than Mexico. They havn't produced lately and they obviously have to take a backseat to the US team talent-wise, as much as they would rather not. Consider too that that wasn't even our first team that beat them last night (well at least not our entire first team).

This ranks up there with one of the dumbest statements I've seen here- which is quite something.

Oh Good Lord. If this thread wasn't about trash talking, what was it about? Give your bleeding-heart liberalism a break every now and again and laugh sometimes. I said what I said completely within the context of the thread's intention.

Breath! :)

dola,
for what its worth - I really hope Donovan goes back to Europe and tried to prove himself at the highest level. He has talent, and it would be a big boost for US soccer if someone at a skill position could pull it off.
