I think they would have been better served making a game with fictional players. It's not like college football or basketball where you have quite a few stars. I don't think I can name more than one college baseball player.

What do you mean. The game would have to ship with fictional players. You can't sell a game with college player names on it.

The real names would come from 3rd party roster sets, just like the football game. I doubt roster accuracy is even decent on the first version of this game.

Maybe it's just me, but I have no desire to play a baseball game that doesn't have the sound of the crack of the bat.

Baseball video games are something I play for the experience, not because I like the players or teams. MVP was a terrific game and I still play it on occasion. A college game that "pings" everytime I make good contact? No thanks.

FWIW, I realize this may seem like a stupid, petty, minor gripe, but it really would impact the enjoyment of the game for me. It's one of the reasons I've never been a big fan of college baseball in the first place.

Interesting. I wonder how the recruiting is handled, and how they deal with players leaving early for the draft (as well as recruits). I could see myself interested enough to pick up a copy.

On a semi-related note, what was the name of that online text-sim college baseball game? I played it way back in the early test phases, and I was impressed by how it worked, both in terms of recruiting and in how players progressed. I didn't like it as much after they started another beta and quit playing...

I'd be more interested in this than in a MLB console game, actually. No more effing salary cap! :)

Though I can't imagine that the stands of most of the schools would be as full as what they'll probably make them. ;)

I mean they should have made a Baseball Stars type game. Old School. For the most part, people don't care about college baseball. It's a niche sport. Like Women's basketball.

Another big draw: many fewer games in a season. So you can actually play out a season in a decent time.

Very good point. Here's hoping it's possible to find slider settings that allow the in-game experience to be both believable as well and realistically challenging. I like to win, but if I go 55-0 and outscore the computer 500-50, I'm a little less interested in playing out the games.

That's not an absolute killer for me though - I had fun simming most of my games in previous versions of MVP and playing only a handful. Same with NCAA Football.

I have no idea what "good" college stats are. Im guessing if you were a top notch team, realistically you could probably win 80% of your games, and outscore the computer by a ton.

True. But I guess my point is I don't want to be able to take an average or worse program and be able to kick the computer's ass on a regular basis - I'd like to be able to find a realistic challenge level that also plays in a believable manner.

The west and south kick ass in college baseball for obvious reasons. Every year. The new rules changes are an attempt to correct for that.

Earliest allowed start date has been moved to be mandatory as the last Friday in February, pending "legislative approval" I think. This would go into effect in 2008.

Right now many western and some southern teams start in January.

I would imagine that with the number of stadiums they will have to create, they are going to cut corners on most of them.

I would also guess that on this first iteration of a college version that they probably didn't have enough time to really get good reference material for all the stadiums. This will likely improve with future versions (assuming they keep producing the game).

Stadium accuracy for a college baseball sim is rather low on my list of priorities compared to a MLB sim.

Which college baseball stadiums will be featured on the game?

GR: Outside of the obvious facility in Rosenblatt Stadium, EA told us that there will be 16 ballparks on the game. Teams that will have their ballparks on the game include Texas, Ole Miss, Baylor, Georgia Tech, Cal-State Fullerton, Clemson, Florida State, LSU, Rice, Stanford, Arizona, Arizona State, Miami, Nebraska, Southern California, Notre Dame and Tennessee.

Is it really that hard to add the other 200 teams? All they add are 200 logos, some jersey numbers, randomize the skills, and model a conference (copy and paste). Not that hard, and I doubt it would max out a DVD, or heaven help us when the 360 comes out with only DVD's.

Well, there's a difference between doing a minimum amount of work to add the teams if you don't really care about accuracy. I have no idea if they're attempting to mimic actual rosters as they do with NCAA Football; I doubt it though, which means that yes, they could just populate the rosters with randomly generated players that conform to an overall team talent level. Adding the logos for all the teams probably isn't much work at all, especially considering they already have most from the NCAA Football franchise.

Uniforms though, if you want to be accurate would take a lot of time. Now, it's easier in baseball to get away with doing a 'generic' style uniform and just code certain parts of the jersey to be the right color and throw whatever logo you have on the cap. But that won't be accurate for most teams.

I suspect if this is true that it's a mix of a decision to go for accuracy at the expense of having more teams, and perhaps not enough time to test the size and scope of having all teams included and making sure things like scheduling and recruiting work.

I'm not sure when they started development on this title, but it's possible that EA Canada was already on their way to doing another rev of MVP when Take 2 bought the exclusive rights to the MLB license, forcing EA to change tactics mid-stream.

It may also be the case that EA is deciding to test the waters with this release to see what the market is like, and is hedging their costs a bit by not going overboard on the work needed to completely flesh out the NCAA universe in their game.

I can understand them possibly being unable to get every Division I team in there, but honestly, if I can't be my alma mater, I don't see why I'd bother with the game. It looks great, but I doubt that the Sun Belt Conference will be represented. Perhaps I won't be playing any console baseball games next year. MVP 2005 just spoiled me. I guess I could keep playing THAT, but I doubt it.

Hopefully, if they do a followup version to the college baseball game, they'll have a chance to get all of the Vision I teams in, and then I'll be happy. :)

He's not. Summer rules are defintely in the game. When I read about it, I took it to mean summer leagues, like the Cape Cid league, which does have college players using wooden bats.

How's recruiting going so far with everyone? Any tips? So far all I'm managaing to do is drive my team into the ground.
I dunno - I guess I'm doing OK since I'm keeping Washington in the hunt for the CWS each season. I basically start the season targeting the 3 highest guys in the Baseball America list that are available for my team that fit my upcoming needs. I put the 50 points on them to scout them the first week, and if they all have decent projected trends I proceed to give them each a 150 point visit to the school. That usually raises their interest level to near 50%, and after I've spent visits on all of them I add the smaller point total actions to get their interest level at or above 50%. I also start scouting lower-tiered guys where I have a definite need area, usually guys that have a small amount of interest level in my program already. The ones that have promising upward development arcs I give visits to.

By the time the quiet period hits, I usually have at least 5 guys that are at the 50% interest level, usually more. When the signing period happens, most of those guys are still available and then it comes down to a case of negotiation. I usually try to scale back the playing time expectation if I can, and sometimes I have to jack up the scholarship amount to make up for it. Seems like you only get 3 shots at negotiating with a guy, so if you really want him you'd better make a good offer that 3rd time around.

My team is at a 3 prestige level - I'm not sure how many recruiting points per week you get as you get higher. I don't know if the recruiting points add up if you don't spend them that week - it's either that, or the really high prestige teams get a lot more recruiting points, otherwise I have no idea how you'd be able to spend that 450 point home visit option with a player. I assume that action goes a long way to assuring that a kid will commit with you.
