Any reccomendations? I've heard that 100% agave is preferred, but I don't want to spend $50 or more on a bottle. Whats the best I can get for less than $30?

Patron is the best, but it is expensive. It goes down so smoove, it's worth the extra money. But if you want to go the cheaper route, you can try something like Milagro (hxxp://www.beerliquors.com/buy/liquors/milagro.htm). Corazon is also great, but again, around $50.

Hrmm... I worry about cheap tequila. In my experience, the cheaper the tequila the sicker you feel the day after.

This is a pretty solid equation for any liquor, I've found. But when you're on a budget, you need to make some sacrifices!

Maybe you can filter it in a Brita filter like people do cheap vodka to make it taste like expensive stuff!

Don Julio, Sauza 3 G's, Sauza Commerativo, Corazon.
A 750 Commerativo might be a little over $30 but a 750 of all the others I listed will keep you under budget.

I second Sauza.

I've never understood the fascination with expensive liquors. None of it tastes good. It's liquor.
As for for making you sick, I used to drink 1 & 1/2 gallons of Heaven Hill vodka a week and I did alright in the morning. I mean, I was sleeping through it, but hangover dreams are the best.

clearly my herd, you are missing something. Have a shot of Stoli/SKYY and then do a shot of Grey Goose and tell me there isn't a difference in taste that you'd pay for.
vodka is my drink, so i have no comment on anything else, cept maybe some scotches

Couldn't agree with you more, same goes for Gin.
I took a tequila class a few months ago in Mexico. Someone correct me if I am wrong, but there are 3 types, Blanco, Respesado (1+yr aged), and Anejo(5+ yrs aged). Blanco is the harsh white tequila that you will most likely get at bars, and is cheap. Respesado is a bit darker in color and is a little less harsh. Anejo was great. I think we had some Don Julio Anejo, they called it sipping tequila. It was actually quite smooth, and could drink it straight with no problem.
Of course the Anejo tequila we had was priced at $75-$85/shot, so if you are looking for cheap but good, that doesn't fit the bill for cheap.

I don't think so, but the Brita filter has to have a liver transplant after several years of heavy use.

Yes, it does. You have to filter it through at least three times, though, so it's a bit of a pain. We stopped doing it when we realized how little of a difference it makes if you're mixing the vodka with juice or tonic in the first place.

NOTE: This is not a knock on you, HERD. Just my observation.

My point is that regardless of how "smooth" or what the fuck ever quality you want to assign to your vice, it still primarily tastes like 40% alcohol. That's a pretty fuckin' large hurdle that is just not gonna be lept.
This has nothing to do with my own feeling about liquor. I love(d) liquor. I used to buy a half gallon of Heaven Hill for $8 and sip it warm out of the bottle all night long. I'd swish and gargle it without flinching as a party trick.
I can sypmathze with those that want to judge beer, because there are are indeed a wide variety of flavors thta can be accomplished within the < 4-9% spectrum. But whenh you're talking about liquor there's only one thing that's gonna stnd out, and that's the alcohol.

Do it right, get 2 bottles of Jacquins for less than $20 then use the extra $10 for some Tylenol. :D

If it comes in a plastic bottle, don't trust it.

A half a gallon a week of warm liquor?
Any thoughts on Jose Cuervo Tradicional, as opposed to Especial. It's a little more expensive, (27.99 vs. 18.99 for 750mL), but I'm assuming it's therefore better. Any experience to verify?

It is really, really smooth. You can drink it like water.

That is both really good to hear, and very dangerous to hear. I picked up some and will have to try it out tonight. Will update if possible ;)

I'll second patron, but it's not cheap. If you're buying patron, go ahead and get the gold.
I got some really good tequila at the duty free alcohol store in the airport in Cancun. A bottle for around $25 of tequila that was close to Patron quality. I think it was called Herra-Dura. They were giving out SAMPLES of the stuff to try before you bought it. I had to buy it jsut becasue of that.
I hear Jim's "TCY2 blend" is also nice.
