BERLIN - A German brewer has concocted what he says is the world's strongest beer, a potent drink with an alcohol content of 25.4 percent that is served in a shot glass.
"Everyone who has tried it is enthusiastic. It tastes like a quirky mixture of beer and sherry," said Bavarian brewer Harald Schneider.
Schneider, who lives in southern Germany where beer is a tradition, said his beer fermented for 12 weeks for an alcohol content twice that of Germany's other strongest beers.
"People will only be able to drink two or three glasses, otherwise they'll drop like flies," he said.
Schneider expects the holders of the world's strongest beer, the Boston Beer Company, to put up a fight.
"I'm pretty sure the Americans have something up their sleeve."

Isn't that just a really weak shot? 2 or 3 and drop?

hate to break to to the german guy, but Hair of the Dog Dave is a 29% abv barley wind and Barley Johns Rosies is at 28%, so he has a little more work to do.
as far as beer in a shot glass, i have had several beers that were served in 2oz increments, but they come is a 6 oz brandy snifter (and usually bear a striking resemblance to a decent scotch)

Didn't Sam Adams come out with a 100 proof beer that runs about $100 per bottle?

sam adams brewed a beer in 2001 called Utopias. it was a barley wine that came in a copper metal bottle and was 24.5% (49 proof). at the time it was the strongest beer in the world and there were only 3000 bottles made, and they retailed at 100 bucks a bottle. they brewed it again this year in the same quantity and for the same price.
this is one of the beers i was talking about above that i said was closer to scotch than beer, and it is served in 2oz portions in a brandy snifter. alot of high ABV barley wines are served that way because of the complexity of the aroma and the texture of the beer make a better presentation that way. also the snifter allows your hand to warm the beer, which allows for more enjoyment of the flavor (ice cold beer is a stupid way to drink beer). the only other beer i have ever seen served that way is Samuel Adams Triple Bock (18%abv), which instead of resembling a scotch, is more like a sherry or a port wine with a chocolate malt base.
