View Full Version : Caught between two rookie QBs (FOF2K4 related)

I just started a new career in FOF2K4. This will be the one that I keep for many seasons/years. In other words, some how - some way I will keep stats obtained from this career stored in a database for future references (assuming that Jim does not implement an import option from version to version).

Some notes:
* I start my careers with fantasy drafts
* I use fictional players
* I use real teams

This time I took a different approach during the initial fantasy draft. I took two very young QBs who were rookies. I then also took a veterian QB just in case I needed him to step in since he knew more formations, ect.

The two rookie QBs taken have a great future in front of them (player cards posted below)
Brian Ashley - 6'0" @ 222lbs
Michael Twigg - 6'4" @ 210lbs

I started Brian Ashley for the first seven games and even though his future ratings are outstanding I had to bench him in favor of Michael Twigg who's future ratings are also excellent. The benching occured after a 2-5 start with a 67.8 rating. Since then I promoted Michael Twigg and he has gone 2-1 (should have been 3-0 but I had a defensive fall-out) and has a QB rating of 88.0.

I guess this is where I am stuck. Brian Ashley (the one I benched) was my first overall pick & his contract is the biggest on the team. Michael Twigg was picked in the 18th round (my 24th overall) with a very low contract amount. Although Twigg has only played in three games I get a sense of greatness from him. Players love the guy and in fact it seems that the WRs are catching everything he throws (Twigg is completing 70% of his passes). Whereas when Ashley was playing it seemed as if the WR would drop passes like crazy. I am now contemplating trading Ashely before the start of next season for a draft pick. Would this be the smart thing to do since he is the highest paid player on the team but yet lacks leadership - but again he has an outstanding future potential? What would be the possibility of getting a first or second rounder for Brian?

Keep Twigg. He's got 2 affinities already, knows 2 more informations, and is rated higher in intelligence by 88 points.

You shouldn't have a problem trading Ashley, especially if you don't have any qualms about exploiting the AI. The AI goes nuts over young, good QBs, and I'd expect you could get multiple first rounders for him. Most people do feel that's exploiting the AI, though, but I think a couple of first rounders would be about right.

If you're in it for the long term, don't worry about the cap hit for now. Worry about the problems you're going to have signing Twigg to a long term contract when he's a superstar. :D

Doesn't matter. You're the Bears, and whichever one you keep will have a career ending injury. If you keep both, they both will have career enders. So whichever one you like the most, trade him for the sake of him having a good career.

flere-imsaho, is there a house rule that you would recommend so that exploiting the AI isn't as easy? Or should I just go through with it? Thanks.

I'll have to check but I will be signing another vet in the off-season assuming I get rid of Ashley. That will be one thing I will be looking for.

You should be able to get 2 first round picks for Ashley.

How do I approach a team about getting two first rounders? Doesn't a team usually only get one first rounder or are you saying that a team may give up two first rounders by giving one away one year and another pick a year later? Thanks.

Yeah. 1 now, 1 later, or two future firsts...

Gottcha thanks. I have yet to be in this position so it's kinda exciting. There is a RB (in TCY - which I use to import rookies into FOF) that is outstanding that I would like to pcik up. Maybe I'll use that pick to get him in the first round. :D

Btw, I agree with trading Ashley, you don't need a QB with a girl last name ;). That and apparently he's a prima donna and no one on your team likes him, so they drop balls on purpose ;).

LOL, about the prima donna deal! Because I have a reciever (Lauren Cabe - yet another girls name :confused: ) - and I swear that he wouldn't for the life of me catch anything Ashley would throw. I was actualy deciding on benching Cabe at first but instead benched the QB and now Cabe catches the ball most of the time.

An off topic question. Going through the strings in FOF using ResHacker I noticed there were a lot of girls names. Why are they there for one and do they ever show up in the game? If so, I how do I change them to male names (assuming it even matters)?

I believe you have stumbled upon Jim's super secret 'pussification' factor ;). Ashley and Cabe were obviously having a passive-aggressive womenly fight.

"pussification factor" LOL, good way to put it.

Any ideas why woment(female) names are in the strings - when accessed via Reshacker?

Probably because they are names that are occasionally used for males as well. If I recall correctly, Jim gets his names from census data...

There's a secret code you can put in to switch everyone's 1st name to girl names.

Ashley is dumb as a box of rocks.

I really don't have a lot of experience with house rules, so I can't really give you any help there. What I will say is that when I'm playing SP and want to keep it "realistic" I just ask myself if such a trade would happen in the NFL.

In your case you're kind of trading someone like Eli Manning. Huge potential, but no real experience yet. I think it's realistic that someone would offer two first rounders (say in consecutive years) at least for him at this point.

I bet you could easily get 3 firsts and 2 2nds for him, if you choose to go that route.

I would keep Ashley over Twigg. When looking at the ratings between and including avoiding int's to reading defenses Ashley is pretty close to what Twigg is with one major exception, timing. I imagine that over their careers that Twigg will average 1 and a bit less yards per completion than Ashley, which I feel is a pretty big deal. I think that, that set of ratings is the most important bit for quarterback performance. (I have never done a study to back this up but through observation)

Ashley looks like he/she will be the better quarterbacktress.
