Didn't get to watch tonight--had to work. But I agree with Solecismic--I can't stop watching The Office, just because I loved the original show so much. Which is not to disparage the American version (it did become one of the best comedies on TV).

Earl was good. I was pleasantly surprised because I was afraid that all of the previews would ruin the show's jokes. Very good for a pilot episode.
BTW, I like Jason Lee in the View Askew universe as well...and is it just me but is his ex-wife the white trash in just about every movie?

I was really really looking forward to this 2nd season of the office. I bought the first season's dvd. As expected I loved last nights episode.

I thought Earl was going to be crap and wasn't going to even watch it but nothing else interested me so I put it on. It was excellent for a pilot. Definetly had some laugh out loud moments.
The Office was probably the best episode of the show I have seen so far. I was pretty disappointed with Season 1 but in this episode they seemed to make Steve Carell's character a move believable boss (wasn't as over the top with his jokes) show I enjoyed it alot.

Earl got some pretty good numbers.
'Earl' Is a Pearl for NBC
http://ia.imdb.com/media/imdb/01/I/90/07/49s.jpg The series debut of My Name Is Earl (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0460091/) on NBC Tuesday night won its time period with a 9.3 rating and a 14 share, helping the struggling network win the night. The show had been receiving massive critical praise. (The pilot reportedly tested stronger with focus groups than any NBC show had in 15 years.) On Tuesday, the Detroit Free Press described it as "a gen-u-wine, fresh-squeezed screwball pearl." And Kay McFadden in the Seattle Times commented, "If any show can single-handedly turn around NBC this fall, it's My Name Is Earl

I like how stuff that happens earlier in the show plays a part later without a whole lot of explanation. I don't know why, but jokes like that leave me rolling.

Earl was alright. Very well made. I don't much care for Jason Lee though, and his accent seems to keep falling in and out. Jamie Pressly is always nails on a chalkboard to me. The presence of the maid is inexplicable. Ethan Suplee was good, though.
Probably the best episode of The Office yet. Finally tapping in to some of the pathos that made the UK version so great. They really need to tone the Dwight character down, though--the absurdity of that character just undermines the realism of the rest of the show.

This week's Earl wasn't as funny as the pilot but it still got some laughs. I liked Crabman in this ep. The actor who played Donnie Jones has been in quite a few series. He was Eli in the first season of 24, he was the crazy inmate in Prison Break and now he was the crazy guy in Earl.
I thought The Office was funnier than last weeks.
Ratings for both shows dropped though as lots of people tuned in to Commander in Chief.

Really enjoyed Earl tonight, again. Best new series I have seen in a long time.
I stuck around for 15 minutes of the office and totally hated it. I don't understand the camera angle. Reminds me of watching home movies with little kids acting and always starring directly at the camera. I understand when the actor are taken out of the show and talk directly to the camera, but why do people keep starring at the camera when they are doing a normal shot? Why do they keep looking at the camera?
So, the office will be a pass for me as this drove me nuts.

Mocumentary. They are supposed to know that the camera is there. Hence the reason the boss is always adding the extra over-the-topness.
I don't think that's an actual word, but hopefully you understand what I'm trying to say. The camera being in the room is part of the joke.

I like this Earl the best of the season so far... its pretty good for a network show. I'm amazed how the American Office just keeps getting better and better with each new episode. The original is better but the new one definately stands up on its own merit.

I saw one episode of Extras this weekend. Not sure about it yet. It seems that David is playing sort of the same character that he was in the Office. While that was funny, it might wear itself out after a while.
I can also now say that I have seen an episode the BBC Office, and I was cracking up. However, it will be easy for me to seperate this one and the American show in my mind.

EARL is actually doing well in the ratings, but OFFICE was borderline to be picked up this year, and isn't doing all that great right now.
Still, I think everyone had to expect they would be firing someone you had never seen before in this episode... call it the "Star Trek" phenomenon. If you've never seen them before, they're probably not gonna stick around long.

Earl is doing well in the ratings, and I think the Office is getting helped by that a bit. I think both will be renewed and will continue as a 'set'. Both are half hour comedies without laugh tracks, and it still is somewhat rare for that to be the case.
Speaking of Dwight in the Sith Lord costume, the best was when the middle aged woman who sits next to him (what's her name... I should know this) asked if he was a monk and Dwight's reaction to it.

So f'ing annoying... in BOTH "My Name is Earl" and "The Office", Georgia, which doesn't have any statewide races, minimized the show to less than 1/4th of the screen while showing municipal election results. It really sucked because I was freaking watching it on HD... bastards!
Anyway, two winners yet again. Earl is great (especially with the kid from Rosanne as the golfer), but I think I like The Office better, and I think the American version has eclipsed the British one. "Dwigt" was just hilarious. And having the meeting at Chilis was funny as well.

Shows like the Office seem to be based on putting the characters in uncomfortable situations and that is really a love it or hate it kind of thing for people (there are two kinds of people...). A lot of people I know who otherwise have great senses of humor just don't enjoy uncomfortable situational comedy like the Office.

It's supposed to spoof a documentary, which is why they stare into the camera. (that may have been obvious, but maybe not if you only watched 5 minutes)

I'm not trying to pick on you here, but this is just an amazing attitude that I have never heard expressed before. Do you have an old fashioned TV without a remote controle? I understand when they take the actors "off set" and they talk directly to the camera. It is when they are back in their normal sitcom mode that I have a problem with them looking at the camera. Reminds me of watching little kids who do not know they are supposed to ignore the camera. Unless you are claiming that the camera in the sitcom scenes represents an unscene character; then I would say I have never stuck with the show long enough to see the camera man talk and interact with everyone.
Actually there is not another short sitcom on at 9:30. Just 1 hour dramas half over and reality programing, although I think tonight CBS was airing a country music show. I am assuming that rather than expand Earl to a full hour they will just replace The Office with another 30-minute sitcom.

I'm not trying to pick on you here, but this is just an amazing attitude that I have never heard expressed before. Do you have an old fashioned TV without a remote controle? Or what special advantage do you get by watching the same station all night? Can't you just watch someone else at 930? I need to know!

the documentary camera is indeed always supposed to be there - not just for the off set stuff. so when they do cast a furtive glance at the camera, they are supposed to be ignoring it (well, the looks are scripted, but, I think you get it). so yes, the camera is another character. that still doesn't mean you have to find it funny. I do, but everyone here knows I have no sense of humor.

Schrute-Space: Changing peoples' lives to be more like mine.
Do you know what costs businesses more than any other
costly thing?
Hurricanes? Stolen office supplies? Unions? Dog
bites?
No.
Tardiness and wrongful or pretend illness are the most
costly and terrible things to affect business. Over
287 billion dollars were wasted last year by people
being late and/or pretending to be sick, when they
weren't really.
That is horrible.
Dwight Schrute is thinking about starting a business
where I would be like a Private Eye (Jim Rockford) and
investigate false illness and tardiness. Through
surveillance, interogation and humiliation I can save
companies millions. I would call this company "Schrute
Investigations".
For instance, you are the manager of "Randolph Medical
Supply Corporation" and your account named "Oscarp"
does not show up on a very important day, like a day
when you are cleaning your offices from top to bottom.
You get suspicious. You call "Schrute
Investigations" and pronto i would be on that
ne'er-do-well like a fly on SH**!
I would get to the bottom of this "OSCARP" and find
out if he was really sick or off "roller skating" or
something.
Note to all those reading this blog. Be on time.
Only miss a day of work if your life depends on it.
Think about the billions you are costing the American
economy with your selfishness by being tardy or absent
without leave. Think about me busting your A$$ and
think twice.
That is All-

PS. Thoughts about winter.
Winter is the coldest season. For a reason. The sun
moves south, to warm up the Africans and the
Australians and leaves us in the northern climes to
fend for ourselves in the sleet and the frost.
Animals bundle up in their fur and in their caves.
They hybernate and/or store up nuts to feed to their
chicks and young.
When there is a chill in the air, there are colder
weather patterns coming down from Canada.
In Canada it is always winter. Sometimes the sun
never rises in Canada. Harp seals abound until they
are brutally slaughtered by Canadians. They worship
maple syrup, hockey and Alanis Morisette. I hate
Canadians.
Winter.

Earl and The Office have both been picked up for 22 episodes for next season, so it looks like NBC is going to try to build a new Thursday night comedy block around these 2 shows. Good news for Office fans, as it looked early like the show would have trouble building an audience, but the ratings have been up since moving to Thursday, and the show will be around at least one more year, and probably more than that.

AFAIK the original Office was only shown in the US on BBC America which is only available on digital cable/satellite. The one refrenced in this thread is an Americanized version that is shown on a major network (NBC).
I am a huge fan of the original Office and had serious doubts about the Americanized version when it was announced... I figured I'd watch a few episodes, mock its inferiority, and laugh when it got canceled. Boy was I wrong. I actually think now that I like the American version even more than the original! Its different (mush less subtle, different take on the boss), but it really stands well on its own merits.
If you manage to check it out don't give up after the pilot. The pilot follows the exact plot of the original's first episode and its really terrible in comparison. After that it goes in its own direction although some of the episodes are definately inspired by episodes of the original. IMO, it really hits its stride near the beginning of season two.

The American version of The Office is also written and produced by Ricky Gervais, so that has been a help. As much as I miss Martin Freeman, who has the best bemused look of any actor in history, the rest of the American cast is a step up in class, IMO. I also don't think there's any chance of the mawkish ending that marred the British version (in the two hour reprise special).

it's not written by Gervais other than the first episode, which was adapted from his show. interestingly, many of the writers do appear on the show - BJ Novak (the temp), Mindy Kaling (Kelly), Paul Lieberstein (Toby) and Larry Whitmore (Mr Brown in the diversity episode).

From People.com...
Earl Star's Chicken Pox Shuts Down Show
Monday Jan 23, 2006 1:00pm EST
First, the good news for Jason Lee, the Golden Globe-nominated star of My Name is Earl: NBC has ordered another full season's worth of episodes of his sitcom, in which every week he works to restore his good karma.
Now, the bad news: Lee has chicken pox. How's that for karma?
Although the 35-year-old actor's immediate fellow cast members – including Jaime Pressly, Ethan Suplee, Nadine Vasquez and Eddie Steeples – have already had the highly contagious yet common childhood disease (which normally brings about more serious consequences when contracted by an adult), at least one other "Earl" costar said his mother "couldn't remember" if he had had the pox.
When the show's executive producer and creator Greg Garcia was asked this weekend about how he would write around his incapacitated – and itchy – leading man, he replied that no Lee means no show.
"He'll be in all the episodes," says Garcia. "We're just shutting down until (Lee) is feeling better and is presentable to put on TV again." NBC Entertainment president Kevin Reilly told PEOPLE the hiatus should last "for about three weeks."
Asked if Lee might be even more amusing as Earl with spots, costar Jaime Pressly shook her head and said: "We'd all look funny if we all had the chicken pox. If he came, we would all be sick."

I liked both shows last night, but I liked last week's office better where they had diversity day and they all had different cards that said different ethnicities on them and they put them on their heads. That was hilarious. "Notice I didn't have anyone be an arab. I thought that would be too explosive, no pun intended." That quote by Michael had me rolling. Then when Kevin said "You wanna get high? I think you do mon." Last week's episode was much better.
Diversity Day (which is a rerun from season 1) is my favorite Office episode.

Earl was great. Catalina crossing the border, Joy doing everything a pregnant woman is not supposed to do, just bringing back the Y2k hysteria was awesome.

That was hilarious, especially the shot of Ryan afterwards.
BTW Jenna Fischer was on Leno tonight, she is way hotter outside of the show. I suppose they do that on purpose... because a woman that hot wouldn't stay in Scranton??

Yeah Jenna talks about how they won't let her put her hair down and they purposely dress her down in frumpy outfits. I don't think it's necessarily the Scranton thing, but more so how they view the character. She's obviously not very confident in herself, and that's why she's stayed with Roy all these years.

Oddly, Teachers is another BBC remake (just like The Office), except I have no clue why they did that. Teachers has absolutely nothing in common with the BBC version, which was a half hour dramedy that was pretty entertaining. The whole style of the show, the characters, the stories, are all completely different. The only thing that's the same is the profession.
I watched the pilot and it was pretty awful. The lead was pretty bad, and so was the British lead (althought she was apparently good in the BBC Coupling). The other characters were extrmely bland sitcom stereotypes. The only cast member I liked was Sarah Shahi, who was pretty hot and actually had some good comic timing.

Especially with the "what is he getting out of this relationship?" bit. It was Great UIC, that was of course intentional. I don't think I've laughed out loud more at any sit-com than the office. Regular belly laughs that I can't stop. The show is just a blast to watch.
As for the Earl bit. I'm still an Earl fan as well. The brother is great.
this was a good episode, I liked it
"I'm going to need a magazine"
"ALL we need is urine."
"I'm still going to need a magazine."
Creed idetifying the strain of MJ and Dwight saying no it's marijuana was the line of the night.

I'm not sure what show you were watching. Jim looks directly at the camera less than a minute into the show. Dwight also did it after Oscar stormed out. There were many other moments as well.
I don't understand the complaints about this aspect of the show. The premise is that it is an actual documentary being made about the employees of Dunder-Miffflin. What we are watching is that documentary, so the glances are important because the characters recognize that the cameras are there. There was even one episode where the cameraman helped Pam out in her investigation of Dwight and Angela's relationship.
This concept is taken directly from the BBC version, which worked the same way. The series finale was fashioned as a followup to the previous documentary, which had now aired in the UK and all the characters commented on how it changed them.

Best line from Earl: "If you cut me in half, I wouldn't fight with myself; I'd probably work together with my legs to get to the hospital."

Last night's episode of The Office is exactly why I watch shows with continuing storylines. Shows with a self-contained structure can get old after a while because they're not progressing anywhere. The Office showed how you can build a season (and a half) worth of storylines and then have them collide in a hilarious and painful way.
And next week, we get a supersized episode written by none other than Steve Carell.
