To me, the Gran Turismo series is way overrated. Sure, it looks pretty and the customization is nice, but the racing is boring. The AI cars are just out for a drive. They don't seem to care if they win or finish dead last by 10 miles.

What games do you think are overrated?

Many, many shooters and RTS titles.

I think Halo was. I'd rather play half-life or Max Payne.

And the Tom Clancy games just don't to it for me.

I'd agree with Halo. I enjoyed Timesplitters a lot more that I enjoyed Halo.

Dear god yes. That game was incredibly awesome... for about 2 hours. Now all i remember about it is that you could train your cow(I used the cow at least) to shit on the villagers doorstep and that it got impossibly tedious very very quickly.

Another vote for Halo.

After all the good reviews it got I waited for it to show up on the PC. Totally underwhelmed.

I'd nominate Halo too... What is the difference between this and any number of shooters out there? Don't get me wrong, I don't hate shooters.. but this one eh..

I'd also like to add anything Mario Brothers related... hop hop hop.. punch big blocks, get big mushrooms.. *yawn*.

And last, from the coin-op world - Centipede...

Centipede is CLASSIC!

I enjoy Halo, but I do agree that it is over-rated. Everyone I talk to about not getting the 360 says, "But what about Halo 3?!"

Wow. This was one of my favorite games ever, and easily the best RTS I ever played.

It's the only RTS i finished, i remember also when i was at university that i setup a network betwen my room and one of my flat mates and we played against each other for 48 hours straight, even eating in front of our computers to not to lose time, and only going to the WC we we could not wait anymore or to clean our eyes at they hurted a lot. After that i slept for 12 hours and we both agreed on deleting the game from our computers. It was so dangerous for our health and for our studies.

I tried to make it through the solo game in Halo, but it just wasn't interesting. The enemies were boring. Maybe it would have been fun in multiplayer deathmatches, but my friends don't play games and I don't have Live.

GTA kind of sucked because on the PC you couldn't save a mission. As soon as I got to hard missions the game just became drive around doing jumps, get the cheat code for the tank and go on a rampage.

Or get all the weapons and go on a rampage. It was fun for a couple days.

all games made strictly for consoles are over-rated.

That's close enough to my initial reaction to the question to be a pretty good answer.

I was going to go with something like "99.9%" of them, since I've yet to find one that I really felt like was worth my time or money for me personally. That would pretty much make them "overrated" by anyone who even bought them.

Halo sucks. You know why its so popular? Console gamers were able to play a game that pc gamers had been playing together for 10 years. Its boring as hell and is no different from any shooter out there almost all of which are better than halo. Half life, doom series, quake, unreal.

As for GTA series. The last 2 have been amazing!!

It pains me to say but NCAA 2006 was overrated for me this year. They totally ruined the online experience with the easy running game and super FG kickers.

And I also agree on the Gran Turismo post. The AI is terrible.

WarCraft/StarCraft series. Never understood what all the hype was about. They never held my interest.

i used to be into the GT series, cuz at the time the graphics were sick. but i got tired of driving games. no strategy involved. all car racing games can get boring, basically its about having the fastest car. fastest car can mask poor skills. less powerful cars can hardly ever win a race against the best cars in the game.

i got bored of Halo. should have been Live-ready when it first came out, rather than having to wait for Halo 2 (when i had since then let my account run out).

any online game is boring (except when playing against friends). humans try to cheat and when you blow someone out they turn the game off. biggest wastes of time ever. i generally stay away from online games now.

This post sums it up for me 100%. It's like people loved Halo because it's like the loser olympics. People who are strictly console gamers and who don't want to try and break into the crazies who play online FPSs and have for 10 years finally have something they can be better than everyone at: a Console FPS that's on par with Marathon and Quake 1. Ugh.

Anything that has "Madden" in its title.
"I like buying the same game, over and over, coughing up $50 a year for roster upgrades" Good job, guys. And the gaming media helps push this as every time someone craps out a sports game, in general, it's given a 5 or a 9 or some other high grade just because "it's more realistic than the last" never mind that it's barely an incremental step.

Lastly, the Final Fantasy series has long since jumped the shark. I never liked 7 and each game from then on has had serious flaws from uninspired plots to unlikeable characters to unbalanced fighting engines

Just wait. The next generation of console gaming is going to be the most uninspired yet. There will be few new franchises as dev costs go up. And console gaming will go through what PC gaming went through in the mid 90s. In the PC realm, the dev costs are much lower so there was some creativity but there will be a stall in new ideas in console gaming. This gen will be all about increased graphics and online play and that's about it.

I kind of agree with Halo, but kind of don't. I enjoyed it up until the Library level, at which point it became one of the worst games I've ever played. I just don't see how any human could design a level like that. It was mind-blowingly bad. I got half way through the level and never played the game again.

Halo single player....nah....Halo multiplayer....ehhhh...I'd still rather be playing on the PC, Halo co-op, that is where it's at. And IMHO that is what sets Halo apart from the rest of the FPS out there either on consoles or on the PC. It is just so much fun.

Lastly, the Final Fantasy series has long since jumped the shark. I never liked 7 and each game from then on has had serious flaws from uninspired plots to unlikeable characters to unbalanced fighting engines

I agree with FF7, I never really liked it, but FFVIII is the best RPG is I have ever played. Story, everything, is just great. FFIX could have been better, but I feel like it was churned out at the last minute to just get another Final Fantasy on the PS1. On the PS2 FFX was great. You ever play it? I rank it 2nd on my all time RPG's right behind XIII. Never cared to play 11, I don't do online RPGs.

My initial impression of 12 was that it was going to be a strategy RPG, but now I have the impression it is going to be a hack and slash of sorts. Not real sure as I've not really read anything other than EGM and I'm not convinced they know what it is going to be yet. I don't have my hopes up for it.

Now onto my over-rated list. Let's start this with the Gamecube(my biggest waste of money, and the single most disappointed I've ever been with a videogame.)

Legend of Zelda Windwaker: I was so pumped for this game, but couldn't play it any more than a couple of hours. I knew it was going to be like pulling teeth as soon as I started playing it. What a waste of money.

Madden(PS2/Xbox): On the PS1 and earlier I spent so much time with this series. This generation I've purchased most of the games and haven't spent any time with them at all.

Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater(PS2): Seriously, I couldn't get into this game. I did beat it once, but I beat the first 2 about 10 times each. This one was all about adding realism and graphics and they forgot about the fun.

Splinter Cell series as a whole(Xbox): I really tried to like these the way I love MGS, but just couldn't. Not sure what it was, but I've tried the first, and then Pandora Tomorrow and couldn't keep myself playing them. I think its the same problem I had with MGS, all about realism and graphics and they left the fun on the dev. room floor.

I'll probably think of some more later and may post them.

Wow. I have absolutely loved every Final Fantasy game I have ever played except Final Fantasy VIII, which I thought was a steaming pile of crap. I mean, really terrible. I had absolutely no desire to keep playing after about 4 or 5 hours, and I only played longer than an hour because I wanted to see if it got any better. I slogged through another few hours anyways, because hey, it's square, but it just pretty much sucked.

I also seem to think that Metal Gear Solid III is one of the best games I have ever played. Dubb, you and I seem to have quite opposite tastes :)

Now I never said I didn't like MSG3, it just wasn't as fun as I was expecting. Its a very good game, just not one I had any desire to replay once I beat it. I was expecting it to consume a whole weekend, it ended up taking me close to a month to slug through it b/c I just couldn't sit and play it for long periods of time.

If ya wanna get my tastes in games I play pretty much anything that isn't racing or fighting. Some of my favorite games this console cycle have been:

FFX(PS2)
God of War(PS2, just wish it was longer, took about 7ish hours to beat the 1st time)
Jade Empire(X-Box)
RE4(Gamecube)
Romance of the Three Kingdoms XIII(PS2)
GTA 3 and San Andreas(hated Vice City for some reason)(PS2)
Disgaea: Hour of Darkness (PS2) ***highly recommend for strategy RPG fans, it is in a league of its own.
Fable(X-Box)(Wasn't what I was expecting but I was suprised in a good way)
Star Wars: KOTR(X-Box)(never played KOTR 2)
Silent Hill 2(PS2)

And co-op(wouldn't play these games 1 player), me and my buddy cope play through several games a year in co-op mode, just a reason to be loud and drink beer without other annoying people around...

Dark Alliance 1 + 2(PS2, we found them more fun than the Champions of Norath games)
X-Men Legends(PS2, can't wait to play the sequel, just get past the 2nd level in this one, which is probably one of the worst levels in any game ever and it gets great)
Halo(X-Box, the 1st one was more fun than the 2nd for some reason)

There are alot more games I like out there but those are the ones I came up with off the top of my head.

How can a game be overrated when everyone can get a different level of enjoyment out of it. Even if a game was the most poorly designed game in the whole world and everyone else hated it, but you loved playing it, and you didn't turn it off for a year straight, would that mean the game was overrated?

Dubb93: I bought Disgaea last winter because Final Fantasy Tactics is one of my favorite games ever. However, I just couldn't get into it. I thought it had a very poor class system and just seemed way too "hard core" for me. I had to level up so much stuff that I spent hours just getting through the first chapter. I don't really want to have to level up my weapons, my characters, gain rank in the senate I just want to battle and build a party. It just didn't seem as cohesive as FFT (or FFT Advanced for that matter). I was very disappointed because I thought it would be the game that would give me an FFT-like fix that I've been searching for .

I think the level building was probably the worst part of the game. I think most of my party had been recreated 3 or 4 times to make them stronger and were STILL in like level 150+ when the game was over. But with that said, it was still the most fun I've had with a strategy RPG in this console cycle. I never buy portables so I didn't get a chance with FFT Advanced, but I really wish square would bring FFT back to the consoles sometime.

I don't like Halo either, but I don't like any console FPS anyway. I suck with a controller, and don't have fun.

As for Gran Turismo, the no car damage just boggles my mind. I understand the companies don't want to see their cars damaged, but how in the blue hell can you call it a racing simulation if it doesn't have ANY car damage aside from tires wearing out?

Can't think of any other games off the top of my head that I thought were overrated.

Well, the term overrated lends itself perfectly to the adaptability of someone's personal tastes. For something to be overrated, a lot of people have to think highly of it, and you have to dislike it. Therefore, by its very nature an 'overrated' game is simply not that, because there are quite a few people who really like it. Overrated is completely a matter of personal tastes.
