I just went through a game like this on Saturday, not sure my stomach can take another one.

Right now, with 4:22 left in the 1Q, I'm very much starting to worry that not only is this not a very good Tennessee team but it may be a pretty bad one. As my 7 y/o put it:
I wish Brent Schaffer was still around.

I figured my wife had given 'em up for dead, so I went downstairs at 24-21 to see & there she is, having crept to the foot of the bed (complete with a very big orange cat next to her), sitting there talking to the TV as usual.

What really sucks was that Will had to go to bed at the half (school day tomorrow) & missed the rally. I'm hoping against hope that ESPN Classic will replay this tomorrow night as one of those "Instant Classic" games they do occasionally (hey, it's not like there's too much else on there most of the time, I can at least hope).

It was my first year away from Tennessee after becoming a Vols fan. Craig Hentrich was the regular kicker and punter, but was hurt during a kick return, if I recall correctly.

Leonard, a walk on kicker, was called upon for that last second field goal attempt. Holtz called the kid over, but his pep talk didn't help. Jeremy Lincoln dives past the ball and it hits him in the butt. I couldn't believe it.

Vols ambush 3rd ranked Bulldogs
(October 10, 2004)

Erik Ainge

http://www.utkvols.com/images/2004/georgia/ainge1.jpg (http://www.utkvols.com/images/2004/georgia/ainge1.jpg)

<ALIGN="LEFT">The Georgia Bulldogs didn't have much time to savor their ranking.

In one Saturday's biggest collegiate surprises, the 17th-ranked Tennessee Volunteers shocked a mighty defense and shut down David Greene, for the most part, in their 19-14 upset victory over the nation's third-best team at Sanford Stadium.

"We're really happy to come here and get the win," said Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer. "Many people didn't give us a chance. The win is big, but what we do with it is what really counts."

Greene was outplayed by a freshman, while David Polluck and the 'Dog defense couldn't live up to its top billing.

Tennessee's pass defense was solid, with the exception of the fourth quarter, holding Greene to 163 yards passing with five sacks.

On the other side, Volunteer freshman Erik Ainge was only sacked once while completing 12-of-21 for 150 yards and two scoring strikes.

"It was big," Ainge said. "We were really prepared after last week. We took the loss to heart and played harder."

"Coach Fulmer told us all week that the last time we were underdogs was against Miami last year," he said. "We came in here with something to prove."
Also stepping up to the plate for the Vols was junior tailback Gerald Riggs, who gained 102 yards on 26 carries.

"We never doubted our chances to win this game," the Chattanooga native said. "We were totally confident. We just wanted to go out and prove that we are still a force to be reckoned with."

Penalties and officiating didn't help the Bulldog cause either. After receiving just one penalty in its win against LSU, Georgia was penalized 12 times for 82 yards against the Vols.

The orange opened the game with a solid drive that saw Ainge dissect the Georgia defense with sharp throws, ending with a wide open Bret Smith for a 22-yard touchdown.
After holding the Dogs on their first drive, Tennessee bounced back again with solid runs from Riggs and short passes that accumulated with a 35-yard field goal from James Wilhoit.

Georgia finally got on the board in the second quarter when D.J. Shockley replaced

Greene and hit Fred Gibson with a 25-yard pass for paydirt.

Tennessee later forced a fumble, bringing Brent Schaeffer out for his first drive.

The other freshman led Tennessee into scoring position, but Wilhoit missed a 40-yarder.

After shutting Greene down again, Wilhoit redeemed himself on the next Vols drive with a 51-yarder to give the visiting squad a 13-7 edge at the half.

Georgia got a gift at the beginning of the third quarter when it received the ball on a questionable Gerald Riggs fumble.

The 'Dogs' Andy Bailey wound up missing a 29-yard field goal after the squad was held inside the Tennessee 20.

The Vols were plagued again on their very next drive when, after moving the ball into scoring position, Wilhoit missed a second field goal, a 49-yarder.

On the next drive, Georgia went back into the bag of tricks.

Shockley returned to quarterback, but the team was held to a punt. A fake punt attempt was foiled by the Vols, who took over on the 40.

Riggs continued his running success for Tennessee, giving the squad good position for first downs into the red zone.

He drove the ball inside the five to end the third.

After being stopped on the first play, Chris Hannon made an impressive grab from Ainge in the corner of the end zone.

Tennessee missed a two-point conversion on the play to make it 19-7 with 14 minutes left.

The Volunteer defense put the offense back on the field in no time.

Tennessee ran the clock down with more big runs by Riggs and a nice grab by Jason Swain, but found its only glitch of the game again when Wilhoit missed his third field goal.

It allowed Greene to catch fire with a big completion to Brown, while Danny Ware put the ball in the red.

Brown made another big first down grab inside the 10, then got the ball to the goal line on the next play.

Danny Ware followed things up with a one-yard plow into the end zone to cut Tennessee's lead to five.

Georgia held Tennessee on downs and got the ball back with 2:12 left on the clock.

The squad moved the ball deep into Tennessee territory but failed to complete a score when time expired.

The Volunteers travels to Ole Miss next week for a big 9 p.m. battle against former assistant coach and current Rebel skipper David Cutcliffe.

The game was Georgia's first home loss in 18 games.

The urge to strangle somebody was pretty high after this one.
Yeah, the little pass down deep almost worked ... but almost is what got them beat today, in spite of an outstanding effort by the defense for virtually the whole ballgame.

Phil, fire the freakin' jackass who called that play instead of pounding it up the middle & kicking the f'n field goal.

Poli

I liked the call except it was to Anderson. Anderson has only been playing football now for 3 or 4 years total. He's prone to dropping the ball and to fumbling. Give it to Foster or Holbert instead, please.

Trooper Taylor is going to have a field day in practice this week with all the fumbling going on.

I for one don't like the idea of Lucas Taylor being a wrinkle in the offense. Hey look, Lucas is on the field. He's getting the ball. Good idea, guys.

I hate being up all night on duty. I can't help but think about the game.

4 turnovers (3 not including the lob at the end of the game), 10 penalties, horrible special teams sans one kick return.

Ainge came in for one series and threw one pass. Turns out his receivers for that series were ALL true freshman, including Taylor. Taylor! I'll give you that he looks nifty as a returner, but please keep him off the field when the offense is out there.

Wasn't it just last season that the Vols were sticking with Fayton, Meacham, Smith, Hannon, and Swain so much that Jomo Fagan left school? Now I'm led to believe these three true freshman are good enough to play ahead of, at least at times, of those five? Come on. If you're going to give Ainge a chance, give him a fair one.

It's almost enough to make me be a Bulldog fan. Or maybe that's the lack of sleep talking. :)

Tough loss with Shockley. Hey at least Tereshinski has game experience. Albeit as the long snapper, but hey, you shouldn't need much more than that against Floriduh. I mean, if we could've, I don't know, score two legitimate touchdowns we would have won.

You should be able to handle that.

This season is remarkably similar to one we had a few seasons ago. We entered the year as a top 5 squad with "all the pieces together". A top rated defense and an offense that averaged 17 points a game (thanks to Kentucky and Vanderbilt, otherwise I imagine it would have been more like 10). That put us near the bottom of the nation. We finished 8-5 and I felt blessed by that record. Injuries were a major blow to us then. We've had a few this season, but not to the level that year.

I'll go out on a limb and pronounce us at 8-5 for the year, including whatever Slime Bowl the SEC has for us..

Poli
10-25-2005, 07:53 PM
I did some research. We scored 22 points a game that year. We'd be lucky to match that, especially since Gerald Riggs is lost for the year.

I guess we'll ruin LaMarcus Coker's redshirt year for, let's say, 3 carries on the year.

Some really bad numbers for Tennessee fans to look at:

Tennessee has been shut out in at least 1/2 half of every game except for Ole Miss.
UAB 2nd Half
Florida 2nd Half
LSU 1st Half
Georgia 1st Half
Alabama 1st Half

There have been 12 TD drives by the offense in 6 games. Three of those were on drives that started inside the opp. 20. One started on the UAB 33 yard line. One was the OT score against LSU. One was the late useless score against Georgia. There have been only been two TD drives of longer than 70 yards.

That is 6 TD drives in 6 games!!! These drives were 80(UAB), 83(Fl), 61(LSU), 75(LSU), 56(MS), 63(Ga) I love Tennesse football but this has been one hard year to watch. At least, we have one of the best defenses in the nation. Maybe we should just punt on 1st down everytime and see if the defense can score.

Hopefully a bowl will come calling... It really hurts next season to lose that month of practice that you gain when you make a bowl. Tennesse is 3-4 right now with Notre Dame, Memphis, Vanderbilt and Kentucky left. Right now the Notre game game doesn't looks like a win (but you never know). That would be 3-5 with 3 MUST WIN games just to make a bowl. Tennessee always get sthe best games out of all three of those remaining teams and I am sure they smell blood in the water and believe they can win. If just one pulls the upset there will be no bowl. I am not sure our 1 TD a game offense can win all three of those games.

Poli

Offensive coordinator Randy Sanders is expected to step down as offensive coordinator today, but will remain with the team (at least till the end of the season) as the quarterbacks coach. Not the whole problem, but it's a start.

However, if we continue to run the same dunkin' donuts offense, it's Fulmer's fault.
