From what I understand, that is the case. SI went through thier boards a little while ago and denied everyone that had a free email account. They also wouldn't let anyone with a free email account sign up. This was to try to cut down on the number of trolls around there. I think they did it for their main site as well (that's a different login). That's my understanding anyway. If you have some questions, you could try asking on here. There are a number of EHM folks that frequent this board as well.

How come they have more trolls than other boards? Because I haven't run across this problem anywhere else on the web.

I think their boards have a younger croud than others (that I frequent anyway). It seems that a lot of posts over there can be quite juvenile. I don't know the particulars, but this is from the Terms of Service that you essentially agree to when you sign up over there:
Use of free email accounts
The following providers of email accounts are not accepted on this forum. gmail.com, hotmail.co.uk, hotmail.com, lycos.co.uk, lycos.com, mail.com, msn.com, yahoo.co.uk, yahoo.com

So, it's like some of the MMRPG communities.

The SI forums have over 40,000 active users (people who have posted at least once in the last 3 months) - this makes them quite a likely and hectic place, however it does unfortunately also make the boards popular with trolls and people who want to do unwanted advertising etc. ... hence our restrictions on registering with free email adresses etc.
We do run our own custom software (aliashunter) which helps limit the chances of trolls etc. from re-registering once they've been banned once.
