OK - I got radii a new charcoal grill and smoker for his b'day...we've never owned one and although we both love grilled food, neither of us has any grilling experience.
Tonight we have some steak and baked potatoes - I think we have the steak covered, it's marinating right now, but on the potatoes - how long does it take to cook 2 average sized potatoes on the grill? We have the upper warming rack so I know that is where we put them, but other than that I am clueless.
Help???

It takes about 45 minutes to an hour for the taters to be cooked through, so they should go on way before the steaks.

Potatoes usually take a while to cook on the grill. If you keep the grill covered, they will take about as long as they do in the oven (around an hour).
What we do is slice them up into thin slices, put them in aluminum foil with a little butter and garlic powder, wrap them up tight with the foil, and grill them like that. They cook faster that way, maybe 30-40 minutes. You can mix in a little cheddar cheese with them too if you like.

you can chop up the taters and toss on some garlic and oregano and other spices you enjoy and wrap them in tinfoil and cook them on the bottom. That's yummy too

If you choose to do that, I'd throw some EVOO in there too.

whoops. yeah. forgot to add that in there. you need some kinda liquid to get em all good and glazed and moist. EVOO or butter

be sure to wrap them in aluminum foil, with a pat of butter in the wrapping to make sure when they cook, they cook tenderly...

If you put a whole potato inot the grill with tin foil around it, remember to poke hole with a fork into the potatos.

Wow - I am super impressed....radii just fired up the grill, I'll dig through the spice cabinet, I know I am out of garlic powder :( But I am sure I can find something yummy to throw on there. Thanks for all the ideas! I'll let you know how it all turns out :)

One last question - how long if the potatoes are cut up in foil pouches?

Seasoned salt or garlic salt is good too. Ground pepper is yummy.

I love corn on the cob on the grill. Leave on most of the husk, and add some butter, but remove all of those little stringy pieces. Cover in foil and put on the coals for the same amount of time as the corn.

This is after the fact, but I highly recommend this book (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0761120149/103-7228038-1431059). It covers all the bases of grilling, and is great for someone who's beginning as well as someone who just needs a reference.

I 2nd this. Raichlen writes some good books on BBQ.

If you're making burgers from ground beef, put a teaspoon or so of Worcestershire Sauce in each of the patties while you're forming them... also a bit of onion powder... don't overcook! (Easy to do with burgers on the grill)
As far as veggies, your local store should have some veggie kebabs at the meat counter, or you can get chicken or beef kebabs. Another EXCELLENT meal choice...

For marinades, I usually randomly pick some spices and liquid bases. Tonight I was testing some marinades for my company cookoff, so we were a little more directed. Tried a lime based one and a pineapple based one. The pineapple was a little too much, but I think if we find something to tone down that taste a bit, it could be real good.

To be honest, olliegirl, those potato skins are pretty imprevious things. There is little benefit to cooking potatoes on the grill, especially if you are going to keep them intact. Charcoal fire won't be hot enough for long enough to cook them, so you have to add charcoal, which makes it hard to tell when the fire is at its hottest (which is when the steaks go on). Just do them in the oven, and concentrate getting the steaks perfect on the grill.

and when you grill steak, dont cut it to check if its done.
you will lose all the flavor inside.
it has to settle 3-5 minutes after it comes off the grill before you cut the steak.

Amen. This is similar to what we do. We slice them a tad bigger than french fries, add dehydrated onions, garlic salt, and pepper, along with 4 tablespoons of butter and wrap it in foil. Yummy on the grill or in the oven.

Purchase a skillet, and can put them right on the grill and then you can pretty much do whatever you want for vegatables

Cast iron cooking is a whole other branch of outdoor cooking to explore. Whenever we go camping, we always have several skillets, as well as a few dutch ovens.

Any one have advice on grilling pork chops? We rubbed them with some seasoning bought at the grocery store, but we have no idea how long to cook them...

Depends on how thick and are the boneless?
The ones that I buy are boneless and about 1/2" thick. They probably take about 12-15 minutes total.
oliegirl

No - they have a bone and are about 1 inch thick...maybe 3/4 of an inch...
