I turn 20 in 2 minutes. I drink a lot of soda and don't want to drink any for a while.
I pledge to drink 0 soda in the next 1 year (until 11:59:59pm October 3, 2006).
If I break my pledge I have to post in this thread.
If I post in this thread that I've drank soda, please make me feel very, very bad and shameful.

No, and if you can find a diet brand with enough flavor to suit you you can give up both the calories and caffiene of regular soda without giving up the refreshment it provides.
I've almost completely stopped drinking normal sodas and have found a number of quality no caffiene no sugar brands that work very well.

So if I was able to give up soda, I KNOW you can too.

Caffeine is a little different than other soda, I think. I never enjoyed caffeinated soda and always preferred the citrus kinda flavors. As a matter-of-fact, my mom has been a Coke (soda, not drug) addict for years and it's becoming a difficult now that she's older to get rid of the habit.

One of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard was that excessive soda drinking gives you diabetes.
I'm pretty addicted to soda. I don't think I could go a day without a swig. If I'm ever hospitalized, I hope they put Dr. Pepper in my drip.

I recently gained 10 lobs from drinking not soda but those % 1.50 starbucks frappucino drinks. I swear those things are laced with some sort of addictive substance.
I don't think I have drank soda for a few years. Plain water is enough.

The high fructose corn syrup used to sweeten most sodas is pretty unhealthy stuff, no matter what you WANT to believe.

I gave up soda for a few months. but I couldn't stay with it. it's really my one big remaining dietary bad habit. I down about 2-4 Dr Peppers a day, which is not as bad as when I was younger, but still a habit I'd like to break.

As a diabetic, I know that the sudden influx of huge amounts of sugar causes the pancreas to flood the blood with insulin to try and play catch up. Do this enough times and you never know - it's like thrashing your hard drive. I wouldn't say it causes diabetes, but your'e certainly not going to be your pancreas' best friend.

I stopped Drinking soda at the end of July. I used to drink 3-6 diet sodas a day, then I just stopped. I don't like putting any unnatural sweeteners in my body, and I'm trying to cut as much high frutcose corn syrup as I can out of my diet (only real sugar for me). Since that time I've had a total of about 4 sodas with 2 of them being ones I found at a specialty store which had real sugar (something difficult to find in the states). The other two were real late at night when I just needed something. But I don't really crave soda or caffine. I didn't get a headache or anything when I stopped and actually I find it easier to fall asleep now.

Its true - my dentist flat out told me that unless I intended to fund his summer home(as well as the diabities) - I should quit. The sugar content is ridiculous, as is the acid on the teeth.

I'm actually trying to quit soda myself. I'm a Cherry Coke fiend, and was drinking 3 twenty ounce bottles a day. I'm down to half that now, and trying to eliminate it completely after my neorologist (for migraine headaches) and my dentist told me it would be good to stop.
Good luck, RPI!

RPI - your post has inspired me to join in your plight. i drink ~4 pepsis or mountain dews per day. for me it's the caffeine and (more importantly) the sugar that makes it so hard to stop. i know tomorrow will be headache-filled and i will be in a pissy mood. i'll post here as well if/when i drink my next soda. i've tried this before and haven't lasted through the day, so stay tuned.

If I screw up, I'll also come to the board and fess up.

I have never really been bothered by caffeine. There have been times when I could drink Mountain Dew and go right to bed. My wife is a coffee achiever, but I could never stand the stuff personally, so that's a positive for me.
However, I don't drink as much soda as I once did. I almost never drink it at work anymore and just have it at home or when we go out to eat. Essentially, that adds up to probably 6-7 liters a week. I also generally try to angle for less caffeine by getting either caffeine-free Coke or an orange soda or Sierra Mist that usually don't have any caffeine in them. I wish I could get rid of the calories, but I've yet to find a low-cal drink that both has no caffeine and satisfies taste-wise. Coke Zero is fairly close, though.

Question - do caffeine free diet cokes count? I have quit all sodas except that one and only have one a couple times a week..
If radii goes in on this challenge, I'm in too!
Good for you three and good luck to you all. For myself, I rarely ever drink anything besides water. My wife has a hard time drinking water because she can't stand the taste (no joke, even bottled water), although now she forces herself to choke down a 20 oz bottle a day because she realizes its health benefits. Her main staples aren't soda so much as fruit drinks, which doesn't have the caffeine but still has all the sugar.

I don't care for the taste very much, but I add some lime or lemon to it and then about a half a packet of splenda...it makes it taste more like lemonade or limeade :)

One other thing....
I have been diagnosed with ADHD and I use the caffeine in the soda to self medicate....Coffee....knocks me out...espresso.....knocks me out...so it keeps me on a even keel, when I don't drink it, I have to work out, and cleanse the system....
So I am joining you all on this....

I'd still suggest to try and drink real water, with nothing added. Splenda or any "unnatural" sweetener really isn't that good for you.

Didn't use to drink much soda at all, but then we had children. Cherry Coke got me through those long workdays after four hours of sleep. But now the kids are a bit older and I'm still addicted to the stuff. Gained about ten pounds in the process. Tried to quit twice but didn't make it. A public declaration should do the trick. One year no soda.
I've posted in Radii's Dynasty thread as well. Having my last Pepsis today, and will start tomorrow.

I lost about 15 pounds going from Dr. Pepper to water.
Then my job moved from 5 minutes away to an hour, and all I do is eat out now. Put it all back on and then some. I don't have any cravings for soda. They are the same to me, except I can chug a liter of water and not worry about it. I tend to feel a bit healthier afterwards as well, but that could be a placebo effect.
