Rutgers defense held West Virginia to a 45 yard field goal to open the second half (24-7). Rutgers responds with another very big drive, ending with another Briand Leonard 1 yard touchdown run... this one on 4th and goal from just inches out. 24-14. This isn't over yet, but they're going to need to start stopping WVU's offense cold or they're going to run out of time.

Interception on a tipped ball by West Virginia, and now they'll just run out the clock. Rutgers just couldn't overcome the early mistakes, but played quite competitively. Syracuse next week is definitely a winnable game.

I'm pretty happy with that win. Playing on the road against a team that just beat Pitt and in-between games against Va Tech and Louisville, that could have been a let down game for WVU, but they did pretty well.
Being 5-1 is pretty solid, considering that we are breaking in new starters at every skill position except TE, and QBs had only played in one series prior to this season. We have beaten everyone we were expected to, lost the one we were supposed to lose (vs VT), and beat Maryland (which was sort of a toss-up). Next week, we get Louisville at home. After that game, we should be favored in all of our games from there on out and have a good shot at a 9-2 or 10-1 season.

Just noticing on the play-by-play that the Michigan defense has been called for three 15-yard penalties in the first few minutes of the second half, probably costing them ten points. What are they doing, kicking the QB in the face after every play?

VT 41 - 14 over Marshall. Both of our co-starting running backs were out with Imoh missing the whole game with an ankle injury and Humes breaking his arm in the second quarter. Freshman Brenden Ore came in and had the best rushing performance of the season by racking up ~150 yards on ~20 carries. He will likely be the primary ball carrier for the remainder of the year.

Well, Arizona's done. They had a chance to get back to within a touchdown, couldn't convert, and now USC has the ball back. The Trojans will probably get a touchdown on this drive, raise their lead to 42-21, and then it'll really be over. Unless there's a turnover, there's not much more to see here. I'm going to play Space Rangers 2 now.

Pete Carroll is slowly learning that recruiting based purely on recruiting rankings isn't what you should be doing. Theb est players arent the right players
I'd love to hear your reasoning behind that comment.
For a start, the only monster recruiting class Carroll has was last year (pretty much a top 5-10 player at every position) and most of those guys aren't seeing any significant time yet because of the national championship calibre players ahead of them in the depth chart. Most of his highly ranked players are panning out quite nicely. Patrick Turner is a beast and was destroying people in camp but Smith and Jarrett are both excellent experienced recievers. JD Booty has looked very good relieving Leinart. Brian Cushing was looking good until he got injured. And even Mark Sanchez who is our third string QB could probably be starting on half the teams in the Pac 10 as a true freshman.
And... we are still unbeaten. It says something that you criticize after a 42-21 win, and no disrespect to Arizona but I doubt they would have put 21 up on our first choice defense. We are missing five starters on that unit.
If SC don't go undefeated (and I don't expect them to - the game against your UCLA team will be ridiculously close I expect) it certainly won't have anything to do with Carroll's recruiting.

I think there's 2 major things at play here:
1. The Pac-10 is tougher up and down the conference than most are willing to give credit for, so Arizona hanging tough with them for 3 quarters shouldn't be a complete shock;
2. The Trojans are falling in to a psychological trap of realizing they don't need to play their best ball in the 1st half because they're so good that when they turn it on in the 2nd half they can still cruise to victory
Carroll is going to have to figure out a way to reach these guys about their slow starts - they might be able to get away with it against the rest of the Pac-10 and Notre Dame (though they should be careful with Cal and Notre Dame), but I don't think they can pull this off against a team like Texas and expect to recover in the 2nd half enough to come back.
All that said, I'm already mentally preparing myself for the major beat-down the Trojans are going to put on my Huskies in a couple of weeks...how the hell do you stop all that offensive firepower?

I was at the Wyoming/TCU game today. The score is decieving, because Wyoming's defense was basically on the field for the whole game. I'd never seen a quarterback play worse than Corey Bramlet (Wyoming) played today. He had 7 turnovers, including one on the 2 yard line. He just made horrible decision after horrible decision. The coach gets lots of the blame for leaving him in the game that long.
But they should've easily won the game, because their other players were doing what they needed to and TCU hardly dominated.
Robert Henson returned a fumble 22 yards for a touchdown and TCU took advantage of a number of short-yardage situations in a 28-14 victory over Wyoming on Saturday.
Wyoming (4-2, 2-1) turned the ball over seven times - all by Corey Bramlet, who threw four interceptions and fumbled three times.
Brian Bonner intercepted Bramlet on just the third play of the game, giving the Horned Frogs (5-1, 3-0) the ball on the Cowboys 19-yard line and setting up Robert Merrill's 1-yard touchdown run. Chris Manfredini's kick was wide right, making it 6-0 with 11:26 left in the first quarter.
A short Wyoming punt gave TCU another short field, giving Manfredini a 32-yard field goal late in the first quarter. Three plays later, Quincy Butler intercepted Bramlet, setting up a 34-yard Manfredini field goal that made it 12-0 early in the second quarter.
Jovon Bouknight pulled the Cowboys within 12-7 on a 31-yard touchdown pass from Bramlet midway through the second quarter.
But Corey Rogers' 17-yard punt return gave TCU another short field, setting up Jeff Ballard's 13-yard touchdown pass to Aaron Brown for a 19-7 lead with 1:42 left in the half. Henson's touchdown came just 39 seconds later, but Manfredini missed the kick again, making it 25-7. Peter LoCoco kicked a 52-yard field goal as time expired to make it 28-7 at halftime.
Bouknight's second touchdown catch, an 11-yarder late in the third quarter, pulled Wyoming within 28-14. But three drives into TCU territory in the fourth quarter ended in Bramlet turnovers.

And Wisconsin goes down.
Not that they deserved to win, but an event in the 4th quarter illustrated why I can't even stand to watch Badger football anymore. My absolute biggest pet peeve in football is conservative playcalling and game management, which Alvarez is the king of. The Badgers were down by 10 with a little under eight minutes to go. Despite the fact that they had given up TOUCHDOWNS on FIVE consecutive Northwestern possessions (not to mention a long drive for a FG before that), they elected to punt from the Northwestern 46. I don't give it a shit that it was 4th and 11 ... it could have been 4th and 35. He gave up on his team right then and there. The situation really doesn't change whether or not you punt or go for the first and don't get it. You're going to have to stop the other team in three plays, or maybe give up one first down before you get the ball back. The expected 20-40 yard change in field position means very little at that point. Yeah, the punter did a nice job (which he has all year), but sure enough, Northwestern takes only 6 plays to go 97 yards for another TD. The Badgers got lucky (via a turnover and Northwestern's similar defensive incompetence) to have a chance at the end of the game, but that decision with 8:00 to go was good enough to seal the L.

Interesting statistic for today: 35 Division I-A teams entered the day with only one loss. Four did not play. Of the remaining 31, they went only 16-15.
There are still nine unbeaten I-A teams, all from major conferences. Virginia Tech, Florida State, Penn State, Texas, Texas Tech, USC, UCLA, Georgia and Alabama.
Virginia Tech does not play Florida State this year. Neither do Georgia and Alabama. USC and UCLA play on December 3, the same date as the ACC championship game and the SEC championship game.
Wouldn't it be absolutely fantastic if all six teams went into December unbeaten? Throw in an unbeaten Texas or Penn State and the national championship would be beyond meaningless.
One-loss teams from minor conferences include: UTEP, TCU, Fresno State and Toledo. If you want to include the Big East (I'd call it a "'tweener" now), add Louisville, Connecticut and West Virginia.
Indiana and Baylor still only have one loss.

I think if Virginia Tech rolls over Miami and Florida State (in the ACC Title Game), they easily can jump Texas.
It's stuff like this that makes a playoff so inviting. Last season, it was regarded that Auburn missed out on a slot in the BCS Championship game, due to their low strength of schedule in their non-conference games. Nevermind that they still won all of their conference games, including the conference championship game.
Now people will make the argument that if Virginia Tech wins all of their conference games, they should leapfrog Texas, even though Texas played and won the toughest non-conference game of the year, because the Big 12 was weaker than the ACC.
This is exactly why we need to have Div. 1A have a playoff system, the way that every other NCAA Division from IAA on down has.

Yup, I would take LenDale in a heartbeat over Reggie as a pure halfback, especially in the NFL. The USC offense works much better with LenDale getting the majority of carries and Bush as more of a receiving threat, but for whatever reason that isn't the gameplan this year.
I haven't seen Drew play so I can't comment on him. Ironically though he nearly ran me over in one of the parking structures at UCLA last summer when I was there for a women's soccer tournament.
