At this point it appears that if USC and Texas win this weekend, the first BCS will be:

1. Southern Cal
2. Virginia Tech
3. Texas

and the debate will begin. Of course, if all three won out for the rest of the year, Texas would probably be #2 at the end as other undefeateds lose, narrowing the computer gap Va Tech enjoys over Texas right now.

Anyway, here are some Top 25 point spreads -

#1 Southern Cal (-11.5) at #9 Notre Dame
#24 Colorado (+15.5) at #2 Texas
#4 Florida State (-6.5) at Virginia
#5 Georgia (-15) at Vanderbilt
#6 Alabama (-12.5) at Ole Miss
#7 Miami (-40.5) at Temple
#8 Penn State (-3) at Michigan
#11 Florida (+6) at #10 LSU
#12 UCLA (-6.5) at Washington State
Kansas State (+13.5) at #13 Texas Tech
Wake Forest (+15) at #14 Boston College
#16 Michigan State (+6.5) at #15 Ohio State
Oregon State (+16) at #18 California
#19 Louisville (-7) at West Virginia
Washington (+15) at #20 Oregon
#21 Auburn (-7.5) at Arkansas
#23 Wisconsin (OFF) at #22 Minnesota
Army (+23.5) at #25 TCU

duckman -

Should be a close game. ;)

I think it may have been a preseason agreement to televise it. Isn't it at Arrowhead? Maybe Kansas only agreed to play it there if it were going to be televised.

As for the USC/ND spread, I tend to agree, but I really don't know how Notre Dame will be able to stop the Trojans all game long. I think they'll find a way to score some. I also only got those spreads off one site. Others may have opened differently.

USC-ND does seem a tad high, although I don't personally feel this will be the Trojans toughest game.

On the other hand UCLA-WSU seems too low. Obviously the odds makers aren't sold on the Bruins yet. Swap the two lines around, looks about right to me.

Also the Miami line makes me laugh. Is there really any point in playing the game if even the experts are predicting that as conservative? :)

That Wake-BC line is awfully steep considering both teams are run-oriented. Wake gave FSU fits in Tallahassee until the late binge in the fourth quarter sealed the game. I don't think BC has the same kind of "light it up" ability. Wake will keep it close (they always do), but BC should win. I just don't think it'll be by 15 points.

That Texas Tech line seems crazy to me. I would've thought it would be 6 or 7 points.

Kansas State seems to be pretty bad this year and Tech is considerably tougher in Lubbock historically. Not many know it, but Lubbock's elevation is 3200+ feet. I think that contributes somewhat to their success there, it's just never mentioned.

Yep. I don't think TT is near as good as their ranking, but Kansas State is worse. Tech should cover that spread, based on what I've seen of both.

The spread is kind of low vs WSU, but UCLA is like 2-7 in its last 9 games vs WSU. Plus Pullman is not a fun place to be between September and April. ;)

I'd stay far, far away from the USC game. I think that could go either way.

The CU 15.5 underdog against Texas is interesting. I really don't see any possible way CU can keep that game close. CU is a MUCH better team than people have given them credit for being and the defense is actually pretty darned good. But good enoug to beat Texas on the road? No chance. I'd take Texas if the spread were 20 in this one.

This will likely be the first of 2 meetings with Texas this year. CU should handle the North pretty easily and is already 2-0 against the South.

It's interesting because you have two of the larger fan bases in the country in terms of betting lines. Notre Dame lines typically skew a point or two towards the other team because they need to balance the wagering of the myopic ND bettors. However, the last three years the same could be said for USC--people love to bet high scoring, winning teams.

10-10-2005, 04:15 PM
Colorado line up to 18, I really like the Buffs here, the OU/Texas game historically has had some letdowns the following week against the spread. Colorado is a decent team, they lost at Miami pretty handily, but Miami is a better team than people think this year, as people tend to think they are the third best in the ACC. I think they are just as good as FSU and probably better than Va Tech. Colorado can keep it close for awhile and closer than 17 for the whole thing.

As for Texas Tech, Kansas State is a paper tiger...Texas Tech will be able to get up over two TD's and keep the lead in Lubbock.

I'm thinking Texas is ripe for an upset.

Good point, not sure if it will happen this week, but very great opportunity if were at Colorado. We've seen Texas have a business-as-usual mentaility after an OU loss...taking Mack's lead on his "it's just another game for us" mentality. But, you know they are really enjoying this win, and since 2000 they haven't had to react to beating OU. They just reached a huge goal, one that had a BCS bid and a Big 12 Champ game appearance since last time they accomplished it. Will they be able to maintain focus?

I'm sure some people have seen the Brad Edwards piece on ESPN.com (of course, it's an insider article), but he presents an interesting scenario that could make December 3 the greatest day in college football history (I don't think that's an understatement).

Imagine:
Noon eastern (ABC): Big 12 Championship Game: Texas (or Texas Tech) (11-0) vs. North Survivor (not 11-0)
3:30 eastern (ABC): Southern California (11-0) vs. UCLA (11-0)
8:00 eastern (ABC): ACC Championship Game: Virginia Tech (11-0) vs. Florida State (11-0)
8:00 eastern (CBS): SEC Championship Game: Alabama (11-0) vs. Georgia (11-0)

Meanwhile, Penn State sits in Happy Valley pulling for natural disasters to wipe out most of the undefeated teams.

On Sunday December 4, you are left with potentially five unbeaten teams and a BCS mess.

Of course, we always get this talk in October--hand-waving freakoutery at its best--and teams usually fall by the wayside. This year, I think we've got another good shot to have 3 unbeaten teams, but I wouldn't be surprised if on December 4, there is only 1 unbeaten left and the controversy is over which one loss team gets into the Rose Bowl.

Huckleberry
10-11-2005, 12:00 PM
I was wrong, I now show that Texas is currently #2 in the unofficial BCS standings. Virginia Tech is off this week and Texas plays a ranked team. If Texas wins by a reasonable amount, i.e. doesn't stink up the place, they will be #2 next week. At least I think.

Not a gambler but this seems rather high I wouldn't want anything to do with this game... both teams have high-powered offenses, ND's defense is suspect and Southern Cal's been iffy the last couple of weeks. I would not be surprised if ND won, nor would I be surprised if we lost by three touchdowns.

Looks like lots of trap games this week.

The spread is kind of low vs WSU, but UCLA is like 2-7 in its last 9 games vs WSU. Plus Pullman is not a fun place to be between September and April. ;)
Our defense is in tatters due to injuries, and our confidence is all shot to hell after losing in consecutive weeks to Oregon State and Stanford. Our QB throws too many INTs, and our WRs are banged up. Our FG kicking is suspect.

That's why we'll probably win this one. :D

Actually, should at least be an interesting RB duel between Drew and Harrison.

Huckleberry

I didn't think UCLA looked particularly impressive against Cal last week at home. They basically won the game on 3 big special team plays (2 long punts returns + 1 faked punt) ... and while they have some skills I think it was more due to Cal's crappy special teams.

I haven't seen WSU play yet though.

Ksyrup
10-11-2005, 12:58 PM
Not only did they not look all that great against Cal, but they barely beat Washington. Those are the only two UCLA games I've seen parts of. They did a nice job of putting away a down OU team, and played two cupcakes, in the other three games. They still have something to prove.

WSUCougar
10-11-2005, 01:17 PM
Prediction:

WSU comes out fired up, pissed off, and needing to show some pride in front of the Pullman faithful. Perhaps Harrison busts a big run, or Brink hits someone on a long bomb. UCLA is back on their heels for a bit, and gets down early. Maybe it's 14-3 or 21-10 at halftime in favor of the Cougars.

But in the second half we wear down. We give up the inevitable Big Turnover, and our thin defensive depth gets exploited. The Bruins win a high-scoring affair. I'll say 41-35.

Little random football news ...

Wolverines Out, Spartans In At WJR/Detroit
In a move that surprised many in the Motor City, ABC Radio News/Talker WJR has opted out of its deal to carry University of Michigan football and basketball next season. Instead, WJR inked a new five-year deal with rival Michigan State. The move leaves the Ann Arbor, MI-based institution searching for a new radio home for the first time since 1976, when WJR began airing Wolverines sports coverage.

Anyone see that Purdue-NW play? Pretty crazy call I think. WR catches the ball near the sideline, turns to the outside, and stretches the ball over the goal line. They reviewed it forever and ruled that he fumbled the ball before breaking the plane, making it a touchback as the ball roll out of the endzone .

The thing is the ball fell on the plane and it looked like it dropped straight down from his hands. I think it was a TD. Would be curious to hear any other thoughts on it.

Here's the rule: Section 8-3: If a touchdown is scored during a down in which time in the fourth period expires, the try is manditory unless the team behind in the score leaves the field of play.

Not quite the same as the NFL, but Paterno could have insisted on it because a block returned all the way is two points. Michigan would have just downed the ball rather than kick.

It does, but the clock is started on the referee's placement if the referee determines that the spot is forward of the spot of the fumble. Now the ball looked like it went sideways or backward, but the referee must have told both sides he'd start the clock on the spot - and the spot of the ball did seem to indicate that the referee thought it went forward.

Thanks, this must have been the ruling on the field--which I think makes it a pretty poor call. The ball was obviously out. The ref closest to the play had no clue, as he signaled TD.

I remember talking to Babs early on in her tenure when I was stringing a Husky women's basketball game for The Seattle Times. It was so clear her hiring was political, and her emphasis was creating a politically correct sports universe. She kept talking about image, never about the quality of the teams.

She was in over her head. It took 12 years to get rid of her, and really, all she had to do was protect Neuheisel instead of make it a personal campaign to get rid of the guy she overspent on in the first place. I'd be devastated if something like that happened at Michigan - this season has been bad enough.

I'd be devastated if something like that happened at Michigan - this season has been bad enough.

Her hiring was definitely political, as she was a major pawn in President Gerberding's war against the athletic department and his resentment against the success of the football team under Don James. Gerb started the decline with his overt dislike of the football program - it was Gerb who spearheaded the reversal in penalties against the UW that switched from 2-year TV ban/1-year post-season ban to a 1-year TV ban/2-year post-season ban, a move that Don James considered a betrayal and was the cause of his resignation in disgust.

Babs was just another part of Gerb's desire to de-emphasize football at the UW. Her hiring of Neuheisel was one done without enough homework and was a ridiculous example of over-spending. The inevitable NCAA trouble Neuheisel got himself into as well as his pattern of doing well his first 2 seasons only to see his program decline the next 2 seasons and then collapse the 2 seasons following him leaving further hastened the decline.

Gilby certainly didn't help much with his uninspired coaching, but he was simply the last straw in a long chain of events that's led to the Husky football program hitting rock-bottom.

Pray for your sake that Michigan never follows a similar path...

Tech didn't come out that flat--they just took the second quarter off. They outgained Duke by 120 yards in the first quarter and had the ball for 11 minutes, but they had yet another red zone turnover that prevented the game from being 14-0 early.

Then, they decided not to play the second quarter.

Yes, Vandy has looked pretty flat tonight.

And Dat boy run so good.

So far so good on the prediction 28-14 halftime
