WOW... There are scary people out there.http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2194409

KIRKLAND, Wash. -- Seattle Seahawks safety Ken Hamlin was in intensive care at Harborview Medical Center with a fractured skull, bruising of the brain and a broken hand following a fight outside a Seattle nightclub early Monday.

Team physician Dr. Stan Herring said Hamlin also suffered a small blood clot in the brain and was in serious but stable condition. Hamlin, a third-year veteran from Arkansas who had five tackles in Seattle's 42-10 win over Houston on Sunday night, will remain in intensive care for the next day or two, Herring said.

"Right now, he is awake intermittently and talking to us," Herring said. "We're going to need more time to see if there is residual problems from bruising of the brain."

A police report indicated Hamlin and his girlfriend were leaving the club at about 2 a.m. when Hamlin placed his hand on the back of a man and said, "Excuse me." The girlfriend told officers that the man told Hamlin to stop pushing, and the two began shoving each other.

Hamlin then punched the man in the face. Another man struck Hamlin with his forearm, knocking him down, before Hamlin's two adversaries began fighting with other men nearby, the report said. Other witnesses said one of the men hit Hamlin with some sort of street sign.

The two men remained at large, Seattle police spokeswoman Deborah Brown said Monday.

Witnesses provided the men's names to police, who arrived to find Hamlin lying in an intersection outside the club, surrounded by a crowd of people. Hamlin told the officers he was in a lot of pain, and when asked what happened, he said, "I don't remember."

Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren said Hamlin called him to apologize.

"I didn't feel like I should be talking to him for very long," Holmgren said.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Wow though, I hope he recovers fully, however long it takes.

A street sign though? Damn, it could have been worse (knife/gun) I guess, but damn!

It's my fault. I made him my fantasy starter.

It really does suck though. I'm a fan, and I hope he recovers completely.

Fuck!

What the fuck is going on in Seattle - there have been too many of these kinds of stories lately, people beating the shit out of each other at closing time Downtown.

It's getting to the point where the police ought to have a patrol outside all the major club/bar areas at closing time to deal with what seems to be inevitable violence these days.

This was going on when the city refused to heed the warnings when that hip-hop club opened up in 1999. There were people on the streets at all hours harassing anyone who walked by. People clearly armed.

This after they made that laughable attempt to convince eastside tech businesses to move over Lake Washington. They talk the talk but they won't do anything to clean up the city. And it really would be a nice city if they just took a stand.

But then they would be accused of racism.

Not to start a war here, but why should the police ( and in essence the taxpayers ) be responsible. The clubs should have to provide their own security at their own cost or their insurance premiums should reflect any lack of security.

Who pays for the lost tourism, the bad PR and the loss of revenue that results, local tax payers or the individual club? Who has a more vested interest in avoiding these results and the clout to enforce an end to the situation?

Just saying.

saw that one coming from a mile away... how about holding the clubs responsible for the amount of alchohol consumed by their customers?

Nothing wrong with that but the city still has to enforce it, right? How better than to have a visible presence at the clubs until they can self enforce reliably?

Key word bolded. This isn't the clubs fault. Its the fault of an asshole, and is the responsibility of the police. I would expect the police presence to be high downtown when the clubs are closing anyway.

Exactly. All of the incidents that have happened in downtown Seattle with beatings and shootings have happened outside clubs on city streets.

I just heard on the radio that one of the guys suspected in the beating of Hamlin has been found shot dead. The police are investigating to see if there's any connection...

Shot dead? Good...another one bites the dust.

As far as the club problem goes, that's just par for the course. Here in downtown San Jose we used to have a lot of the same problems, and then a couple of years ago they started bringing in a shitload of cops at 2 AM to just clear out downtown. I don't go downtown very much, because I don't really want any part of it, but I imagine this cut down on the bullshit machismo.

Saw on that bottom scrawl that ESPNEWS has that Holmgren has told his players and coaches that Pioneer Square is off limits.

That's been news here for a couple days now. It started when the dead guy's brother (Tramaine) told everyone that would listen that his brother (Terrell) had been in the fight and turned up dead. It's a weird story and the cops can't seem to link the two events together cleanly. There are other interesting parts to this story as well:

- The dead guy (Terrell) was supposed to be tucked in bed and asleep at a federal half-way house where he was staying because he had violated his parole. Terrell was under a 9pm curfew and 11pm lights out. He somehow found a way to get out of the half-way house (with security cameras, locked doors and hourly bed checks - the cops seem to think he bribed a security person), was picked up by his brother and dropped off in Pioneer Square at about 1:45am. After the fight, he was picked up and driven to the Central Area (a pretty violent part of town), and then no one seems to know what happened to him from there. He was found dead on a sidewalk in the Seward Park area (a pretty nice section of town) with multiple gunshot wounds. The half-way house found a dummy in Terrell's bed.

- Terrell was convicted of manslaughter for killing a man in 1994 by shooting him 5 times after a dispute in a craps game. Terrell is a member of the Black Gangster Disciples gang (so he probably had some other enemies as well).

- Eyewitness accounts of the events are conflicting as to who was the aggressor. No one is quite sure whether Terrell was actually involved in the fight or just on the fringes. Ken Hamlin was hit in the head, so he has no memory of the incident.

This info is still coming out. It's front page news out here. If you guys are interested, I'll try to keep you updated.

My wife used to work in one of those buildings around Pioneer Square. When that club opened, everything changed.

Of course, there've pretty much always been drug users shooting up and selling in the alleys around Pioneer Square and a lot of homeless sleeping in the park area. But the violence really got bad when the club opened. I can only imagine how bad it is now with more clubs and five more years of Seattle's pathetic police approach.
