View Full Version : Chiefs/Dolphins moved to Friday

Game time 6 p.m. central.

Alright, allow me to be a homer on this one. The NFL freakin' blows. This is utterly ridiculous. The give the Chiefs one-day notice that they are now playing the next day on what would normally be their travel day. There was no advance word from the NFL apparently that this was an option, there was word about moving to Saturday or Monday or simply moving the site.

God forbid if this were the Giants at Miami this game would be moved to New York, unless the Jets are also playing at thome in which case the game would be moved to New York and played on Monday night.

This is an utterly ridiculous, anti-competitive move. I think it would have been equally anti-competitive to move the game to Kansas City, but at least there is precedent for that. Moving the game to Saturday wouldn't have been too bad, but at least there is precedent for that. But moving the game to Friday night and giving the Chiefs about 32 hours to pack up their gear, arrange for a flight and get to the game for a 6 p.m. kickoff is just silly.

I have no personal interest in this game...but I beleive if a team can't play a "scheduled" game for something such as a hurricane...then it should be a forfeit...

I don't think special considerations should be made in this case...KC would never have a gametime changed because of a blizzard....

Wolfpack
10-20-2005, 02:15 PM
True, but blizzards won't cause en masse evacuations of thousands of people. Blizzards also won't have wind speeds in excess of 75 mph (50, maybe, but not 75). It's also easier to play in 20 inches of snow instead of 20 inches of rain.

Rasmuth

yes...I understand that...well..actually you are incorrect...I live in upstate NY (Buffalo Area) and I have been in blizzards with near hurricane force gales...(not 140 but in the 90's...very rare occurrance indeed though)

any...either way this is weather related...teams based in this area have to deal with those possibilities...if they don't like it...they can move to a city with a more stable climate...

but, I don't believe a scheduled sporting event should be changed for situations like this...if they can't play...the home team takes the penalty...

just my personal opinion. A sporting event cancelled due to weather...should be a forfeit.

Indeed.

And this argument completely misses a huge point: the NFL/team ownership would never take a pass on earning gate receipts/TV revenues by cancelling games.

One of the major football analysts was saying that the option was to play the game early or to play the game late and KC actually preferred early because next week's game is versus San Diego and they wanted to have enough time to prepare for that.

Yeah making a team forfeit is pretty assinine, but telling a team a day in advance that they're traveling and playing a game a couple days early is pretty absurd as well.

Monday would have been best, Saturday easier to take..just a bad move.

I am going to guess that you have never experienced a hurricane. A (very rare) blizard with a gust to 78 mph is one thing. A hurricane with SUSTAINED wind speeds of 140-170 mph is something VERY different. They aren't measuring wind gusts in a hurricane so you are comparing apples to oranges. Also consider that wind resistance rises with the square of the wind speed.

One of the major football analysts was saying that the option was to play the game early or to play the game late and KC actually preferred early because next week's game is versus San Diego and they wanted to have enough time to prepare for that. If that's the case, then it sounds like the Chiefs may have been allowed to pick their poison ... play on one day's notice this week and take your chances with the Dolphins or play on Tuesday and have to turn around go to San Diego the following weekend. That's like being asked whether you would prefer to be punched in the nose or kicked in the nuts.

Monday is not an option because the hurricane is expected to pass through late Sunday and into Monday. Tuesday is the earliest they could have played waiting after the hurricane. What's wrong with playing on Saturday boggles me other than TV and college football getting peeved. But Friday night? There is no precedent for this. There is a precedent for moving games up or back one day with more than one day's notice, and there is precedent for moving sites. Hell, they moved the Chargers game to freakin' Arizona due to the California wildfires last year.

Why not move the game to a neutral NFL city not hosting a game this week? Competition-wise, that would be better than forcing the Chiefs to play on the road with one day notice. It's a lot easier on the Dolphins than it is on the Chiefs.

The cynic in me belives whole-heartedly that if this were a New York team or some other city the NFL is wanting to express their kiss-assiness this game would be a road game for the Dolphins.

from NFL.Com:

CBS will televise the game live to the Miami and Kansas City primary and secondary markets, which are WFOR/Miami, WPEC/West Palm Beach and WINK/Ft. Myers in the Dolphins' area, and KCTV/Kansas City and WIBW/Topeka in the Chiefs' territory.

For customers of Sirius Satellite Radio, the game will be available live on Friday at 7 p.m. ET on Channel 121 for the Chiefs' radio broadcast and Channel 131 for the Dolphins' broadcast.

On NFL.com, fans can follow the GameCenter live on the scoreboard, or listen to the local radio broadcast of the game via the Field Pass subscription service. (Field Pass is available on a seven-day free trial basis for first-time subscribers.)

A tape-delayed telecast of the Dolphins-Chiefs game will be shown nationally on NFL Network on Sunday night, Oct. 23, at a time to be determined.

Another example of why this decision is bantha doo-doo. Everything I've seen and hear is the same as above; televised locally in Kansas City and Miami, no mention of Direct TV. Greg Aiello of the NFL indeed said this is part of their understanding not to compete with high school and college football.

Solution: don't play it on Friday night. Duh. A lot of fans and viewers are hosed by this decision. People in Columbia, Springfield and all of Kansas who would normally get this game as their local game now don't get to see it. Nice move for the fans.

To their credit, the Chiefs are taking it in stride. There's a certain if that's what they're going to treat us, let's go down to Miami and shove it up the Dolphins ass attitude that I like. For once, Carl Peterson and I are on the same page pointing out that this is the first time in NFL history this has happened.

Anyone know where The Chiefs are relocating too? Maybe they should move the game to Los Angeles and see how the LA Chiefs would draw. Because of Stadium Deals that have been voted down the Chiefs are looking for a new home.

That's totally incorrect. Clark Hunt (Lamar Hunt's son) came out soon after the city mentioned that the Chiefs would not be getting the improvements they are asking for. He made a fuss that the Chiefs would possibly consider other alternatives. Evidently Clark didn't know Dad was listening, because Lamar came out the very next day and quickly put down any rumors.

Lamar is not a stupid man. He sees other markets and realizes that he has a good thing in sellouts for every game despite no playoff wins in several years. The Chiefs are near cult status in KC. The streets are relatively empty when the Chiefs play and the TV share usually runs in the 50-60 share range when they play (any of you who know something about TV know this is a huge rating).

There is the possibility that the Chiefs may move, but the likely scenario would be that they will move across the state line to the Kansas side and build a stadium next to the new NASCAR track. With KC in the lead to also put the NASCAR Hall of Fame in that same location, it would end up being a mecca for rednecks far and wide.

Lamar may be pushing some buttons, but he knows where his bread is buttered.

You really think the Hunts will pay for a new stadium all by themselves? Because the Tax Payers have already told them twice that they will not be paying for a new stadium.

Here is a good 8 page article describing this mess with the Chies, the Royals, and the Stadium Complex board.

hxxp://www.pitch.com/issues/2005-10-13/news/feature.html Well, first of all, The Pitch is not a good source for anything other than phone numbers for hookers. Second, only one plan went to the voters and it was a flawed bi-state plan that would have collected sales tax in counties in both Kansas and Missouri to refurbish the ball parks, build a performing arts center and other accoutrements.

The thing is that the Chiefs and Royals have bad leases. Bad for the county because they require the county to keep the stadiums up to "state of the art" standards, but doesn't define that; and bad for the teams because even if the county falls behind on repairs there is an "economic impact" clause that requires both teams to make a payment to the county based on the metrowide economic impact of losing the team. So the Chiefs would have to pay tens if not in the hundreds of millions just for the right to move.

That said, the Hunts aren't stupid. They are playing a game of chicken with the local governments to try and get what they want. They are one of the most profitable teams in the league and it would be ridiculous to leave a sold-out Arrowhead for a question mark anywhere else.

That's exactly what the Hunts are saying too. Do you think that's true? That's the only card team owners have to play when they want to get public money for stadiums -- the threat to move. In some cases it's real -- there are teams would could be just as successful if not more so moving if they are drawing flies in their current stadium. But the Chiefs are one of the 5-10 most profitable teams in the league -- why would a smart guy with so much invested in Kansas City take a sure thing for a huge risk in somewhere like LA where football has failed multiple times or a smaller market than Kansas City?

It's a game -- everyone plays it.

I think the Chiefs will end up in Kansas at somepoint in the next 10 years. Johnson County will make a push, but the speedway location makes a lot of sense. Maybe they could put a stadium in KCK across Kemper ... :)

Rags, you're going to love downtown in another year or two. The Power & Light District will be awesome. I'm a little worried about the new arena -- I'm afraid they're trying to do it too much on the cheap. But downtown is going to be a radically different place five years from now. I think it's either do-or-die for a downtown ballpark right now. If the don't approve a new downtown stadium in the next three years, I think it might be too late once redevelopment takes off. It will cost a lot more money five years from now than it will now.

#1...You posted the Pitch as a reliable link. Not a good start.

#2...The Hunts have already offered to pay for 1/3 of the current renovation costs. Very generous considering what other owners have done in other cities. The state of Missouri has offered no money. Also, the people that voted for the tax raise were half Missouri and half Kansas. Of course the Kansas people won't vote for the tax.....why pay taxes for something in another state?

#3...A new stadium tax in Kansas would easily pass. The state and local government would be watering at the mouth to bring a pro franchise into the state to compliment the NASCAR race (the track is about to receive a 2nd NASCAR race on the schedule). The tax would be only for Kansas citizens and only voted on in Kansas. Most would have no problem paying for a stadium if it benefitted their area, which it currently does not in Missouri. Add in that Lamar/Clark Hunt get a new stadium no more than 20 miles from their previous stadium (i.e. well within driving distance of their current season ticket base), and it's a match made in heaven. If the Missouri side defaults on their loan, you can bet that Kansas will jump right in and take advantage of the opportunity.

I think we've gotten off the point of my homeristic rantings about the tremendous competitive disadvantage the NFL has put the Chiefs into.

In order not to lose a day of practice that Miami would have had and scramble to arrange for a last minute flight, the Chiefs flew down to Miami this morning. The Chiefs claim this is the first time than an NFL team has traveled for a road game on the same day of the game.

I don't think it will matter in the end. Most of the team is veterans who won't be affected much by the shortened week. Miami fields a younger team. Couple that with the fact that the Miami players will have the thought that they have to head home to get their belongings and get the hell out of Dodge and that they only expect the place to be half full, I think the Chiefs will win the game.

Well, maybe the NFL takes its gentleman's agreements seriously. Well, not really since the game is on Friday night anyway. So much for that agreement.

I feel for the people of Florida. I want them to get out of harm's way. They shouldn't be encouraging fans to go to a football game when they should be taking care of themselves. Atlanta plays Monday night -- the Georgia Dome appears to be an option for Sunday. Why not move the game? At least there is precedent for that, with the aforemention San Diego game moving to Phoenix last year for the forest fires. Carolina is off this weekend -- there's another neutral stadium that could be used. I'm not saying they have to turn it into a home game for the Chiefs by playing at Arrowhead -- although at this point playing the game on Sunday at Arrowhead makes a lot more sense than playing on Friday in Miami.

This one's going to hurt. College games canceled when the storm is still two days out. An NFL game played two days early at great inconvenience to the fans.

The bottom line is that hurricane forecasting is still in its infancy. It's not possible to know for certain what will happen four-five days out. So, if the policy becomes react immediately to the worst possible scenario, more often than not you'll end up moving a lot of people for no reason.

And the next time there's a hurricane panic, less will react. They might not believe you even one day out when things are pretty certain.

There's a delicate balance here. One that's out of whack right now because the damage to New Orleans was so severe (two days after the storm) and the media made far too much of problems with FEMA.

Now, we've had an unnecessary evacuation of Houston that killed more people and probably cost more money than Rita itself. And a panic in Florida for a storm which has about a 50% chance of only being a tropical storm when - and if - it reaches Florida.

Now Wilma could still pack a Cat-3 punch and hit southwest Florida. I hope it doesn't. But the danger in reacting so early is if you're completely wrong you've ended up causing a lot of unnecessary problems.
