I am interested in finally learning a foreign language. It would benefit me greatly to learn Spanish. I recently came across the Rosetta Stone family of language software. They are used by NASA and the State Dept but are also very expensive. The research I've done indicates that their product is very good and I'm just wondering if anyone here has used the Rosetta Stone software?

I used this a little bit to learn some basic Polish (along with a Polish class). I can see how this could work for some people and not others. I did not do the full thing, so I can't say if you can learn a language well with only this software.

I'd recommend buying the Explorer version of the software so you can see how it works. It gives you a subset of the language lessons, and should only cost about $20 or so. That way you can try it out without spending a fortune.

I own the Hebrew version and I've found it very good. However, I had some previous experience with the language and am not sure it would be as easy if I didn't already know the letters and the sounds they made coming into it. I have not come close to finishing it, but it's more my lack of discipline (plus spending time with poker) than a commentary on the program. It remains in my CD-Rom drive ready for me to fire it up.

Totally off-topic (I've never used these programs), but doesn't it seem odd to advertise NASA as a major client in this context? Especially when you've got the State Department to drop out there? Maybe I'm missing something, there isn't a basic Klingon tape set is there?

Yes, it is a weird client reference ... but I imagine the Russian tapes come in handy for the guy stuck up there in the spacestation with the Ruskie for six months.
