View Full Version : How often do your favorite teams win championships?

Kodos

I am cursed. My true favorite team has never won a championship at any level in any sport during the time that I was a fan. The Dolphins won some Super Bowls before I became a fan. The Hoosiers won a couple years before I went to school there. I've had teams that I like win (notably, PSU and FSU in college football, San Antonio in the NBA, Denver Broncos in the NFL), but never the team I would have chosen if I could have picked a team to be champion at the beginning of the season. At the end of the day, most of my sports joy has come from watching teams I hate lose (like the Yankees choking away a 3-game lead against Boston last year). Sometimes (like after watching my Hoosiers get clobbered two weekends straight after a promising 4-1 start) I wonder if I would be happier if I just stopped caring.

How have your teams fared?

If we're dealing only with pro sports I'm at five.

Cowboys - '92, '93, '95
Rockets - '94, '95
Astros - Nope

I claim the Stars as my NHL team but don't really follow hockey. It was nice when they won. I also doubt I'd claim the Rockets if they won now. Don't really watch the NBA anymore.

College sports then I've got two more.

Saints fan here, lets take one step at a time, they only recently got their first playoff victory.

It has been noted in ancient scriptures that if they win a championship, the apocalypse may follow soon after.

I'd count any of the pro sports plus bigtime college sports like football and b-ball. But really, any non-high school or below sport that you truly care about would count.

The Red Sox won in the strike year? And nobody told me? :D

I only casually follow the NBA. The Florida Panthers haven't won the Stanley Cup yet. The Rams won the Super Bowl in '99/'00, and I thought they won a second, but I can't remember for certain. Dodgers won the World Series in '81 and '88.

Outside of that, bupkis.

Yes, well the Bears at least had a championship in 1985, it's been since 1960 for the Eagles.

Phillies in 1980, I remember that just a wee bit. The Flyers haven't won since I've known what's going on, and the Sixers won in '83, but I care little about basketball. Only other real "win" was Villanova in '85, and that was just a temporary thing (I'm not counting Maryland's championship, I don't root for them in a diehard fashion). I suppose I root for Penn State, but I'm not really counting them either.

I consider myself a fan of the Pistons and Tigers and they are clearly my favorite teams in their respective sports/leagues, but I am just not a big fan of either sport, so while I am happy and excited when they win, it's not nearly the same. Same goes for all college sports that aren't football.

I get two from college sports in recent years... and even though I follow college lacrosse, I'll leave that out as it gets a little silly there.

I started football fandom when the Dolphins were on top and grew up with them as my favotire team... hard to say whether to count their two titles on my list, as it was pretty early.

Miami Dolphins: Not in my lifetime, though Marino did lead us to the Super Bowl when I was like 5 or 6.
Boston Celtics: I didn't become a fan until my high school years, so I'm still waiting on this one even though they've won in my lifetime
Nashville Predators/Boston Bruins/Toronto Maple Leafs: They're right-tight neck-and-neck as to who my favourite hockey team is. Again, the Bruins weren't until my high school years, and the Predators have never won the Stanley Cup. 'Leafs, we shan't get into. And yes, the Celtics and Bruins are tied together in the same girl, which is a story I've never told anyone about. She's in essence the Lost Girl in my romantic stories (though not the Lost Gyrl, who was someone else :D and is the reason for my Maple Leafs' love)

Packers - I became a fan around the age of 12, in '89. They have one Superbowl since then, and a Superbowl loss the following year. Greatest day of my sport fan life was that Superbowl win.

Astros - Started to become a fan when I moved down here 9 years ago and am into them more then I was with the Seattle Mariners when I was younger. They have never won one in their history. This year was pretty cool though.

Not a big fan of any college.

Kind of cheer on the Spurs but I am not a big fan just because I am not a big NBA fan, so that doesn't count at all to me. Not a real big hockey fan.

I am a fan of the local minor league teams. The independent league baseball team has 3 titles int he last 5 years (and now the city is kicking them out the bastards). The hockey team and AF2 team made the playoffs in their first years last year.

Other than that, State's claimed 5 ACC football titles and 10 basketball titles. The Hurricanes won the Eastern Conference in the NHL in 2002. Panthers went to the Super Bowl two years ago. Bobcats just got started. Rockies...well, they try. Not been the same since they broke up the Blake Street Bombers.

UNC Basketball - 1982, 1993, 2005

I don't really have any memory of the 1982 one.

I was a true Lakers fan and Cowboys fan in the 80s, b/c of Magic Johnson for the Lakers, and my dad was a big Cowboys fan. But idon't claim either of them now so i'm not going to take credit for those.

NFL - Panthers - so close in 2003.

MLB - Cubs :(

Bartman in October, Kasay kickoff out of bounds in Jan 2004, UNC not back on top yet, that was just a rough sports year. 2005 Tar Heels made up for all of it though.

While I was alive? Twice. The Reds in 1990 and the Buckeyes in 2002. Historically the Reds have been very good, but I didn't witness most any of it. All I have is their past glory. As for the Bengals, all I have is hope for the upcoming years.

The Rockets also won in 94 and 95, but I wasn't a fan of them back then.

NY Giants, 2 Super Bowl wins

Other than football, though, I can't think of any team I can really call myself a fan of. Because I started watching football first and was a fan of the NY Giants first, I tend to lean towards the New York teams. But with the Rangers and Yankees, I was never much a fan of those teams. In those sports, I followed the Islanders and Mets more closely. But I can't really call myself a fan of either team since I rarely follow the Mets and the Islanders are just more my team of interest in hockey. I'm pretty much more of a fan of hockey as a whole than for one team.

For tennis, though, I was always a fan of Andre Agassi. But I guess that doesn't count. :)

Toronto Blue Jays - 1992, 1993 World Series titles. 1985, 1987, 1991, 1992, 1993 AL East Champs

New Jersey Devils - 1995, 2000, 2003 Stanley Cup Champs

New Jersey Nets - 2002 & 2003 Eastern Conference Champs

New York Jets - Ok..so it's been a while. A loong while.

My happiest moment as a sports fan and as a player, was when we won the division title in our conference during my senior year as a tennis player, going undefeated in our division to clinch. I was the only guy on the team who had been on the team for our 3-17-1 campaign during my freshman year and so...for me, it was just an amazing turn of events. Of course, this was almost a decade ago. But I'll never forget being part of it.

I take it back. I voted never, but when I was a HUGE Raiders fan, they beat Philiadelphia in the Super Bowl. I've since strayed away from the Raiders, and don't really have a favorite football team. Damn Al Davis for, well, for everything.

I'm a San Francisco Giants fan, and things are looking grim for them now. I guess I'm also a bit of a Celtic fan, so Boston won a few NBA championships for me as well. While not a big hockey fan, the Avs and Patrick Roy won a couple with me on their bandwagon. I'm just not sure if that counts, as I was more in the "I hope the Avs win (again) this year" camp.

I'd be willing to bet that, too. What's really odd is, my favourite teams in the other Big Four Sports (classically speaking anyway) have no one that could really knock them off my favourite spot, though there are other teams I enjoy in each sport.

Orlando Magic - became a fan after their finals apperance, the closest I've seem them come is getting crushed by the Bulls in the Eastern finals.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers - 2003 Super Bowl.

In Soccer i'm a Real Madrid fan since i was a kid so i'm used to see them win it all. Have been tons of times at their stadium, etc etc. The same for european basketball where i also support R.Madrid.

In football, well i'm a Dolphins fan and i started to follow football after the Marino era so i'm not used to lots of success.

In the NBA i support Memphis mainly because i started to follow the NBA when Gasol went there.

In Baseball i support the Marlins and saw them win in 2003, not good season this year.

In college sports i don't support any team specially, i enjoy watching any good game. I use to follow the teams i have managed in FBCB or TCY like Miami, Toledo, FIU, Baylor. :)

College Hockey- Western Michigan- Let's win a NCAA game first
Pro Hockey- San Jose Sharks- Nope. (Why couldn't the guy who got me into hockey been a Wings fan, like everyone else in this cursed state. http://dynamic.gamespy.com/%7Efof/forums/images/smilies/tongue.gif)
College Football- Florida State- 1993, 1999
Western- Maybe if they drop to 1-AA
Pro Football- Detroit Lions- HAHAHAHAHA. Right.

(Large gap in interest)

Pistons in basketball, 89-90, 2004, but I only casualy follow the NBA, usually tuning in around the playoffs
Tigers in baseball- too young for 1984, and I'm even less interested in MLB then NBA.

I'm much more of a college sports fan than a pro sports fan

pro championships:
Lakers: 5 total in my lifetime ('87, '88, 2000, 2001, 2002) only the last three count because I don't remember the other ones
Braves: 1 ('95)
49ers: 3 total in my lifetime('88, '89 and '94) only the one in '94 counts though cause I don't remember the other ones

College:
Iowa Hawkeyes: none in the two major sports (that will change if Kirk Ferentz stays) but we have a lot of championships in wrestling.....

(in my time as a fan)

Denver Broncos - 2
St. Louis Cardinals - 1 (I became a fan of the team during the '82 season, even though I was only 5 years old)
New Jersey Devils - 3
Utah Jazz - 0 (JORDAN PUSHED OFF!)
Memphis Grizzlies - 65 ... no, wait. 0
New Orleans VooDoo - 0
UNO basketball - we won't even get back to the tournament if we can't beat UL-Lafayette
Memphis football - 0 (never gonna happen)
Memphis basketball - 0 (highly unlikely to happen)
Tulane football - 0 (even less likely than "never")

I guess I'll have to live with the 6 from the Broncos, Cards, and Devils. I can pretty much count on all three of them getting to the playoffs every year, but I don't expect any more championships for a long time. The hard part is watching my teams lose in the finals or the Super Bowl or whatever. Since I became a fan of the teams, I've watched the Broncos lose three Super Bowls, the Cardinals lose three World Series, the Devils lose one Stanley Cup Final (although I was somewhat happy for Ray Bourque), and the Jazz lose two NBA Finals. At least the Grizzlies won't get to the Finals anytime soon, and the VooDoo is on hiatus. The losses are hard, though.

Though I loves me my Niners ('81, '84, '88, '89, '94), my true favorite team is the San Francisco Giants. And that has been a sad, sad thing.

From the glory days of Will Clark, Candy Maldonado, Chili Davis, Jeffrey Leonard and Matt Williams (among others...I could name off just about anyone. Scott Garelts? Kirt Manwaring? How about Greg Litton?) to the crap that was the mid-nineties (I still have nightmares of William Van Launching Pad and Rikkert Faneyte), to the heartbreaking seasons like 2000 (Lost to the Mets in the first round) and 2003 (Lost to the Marlins in the first round).

2002 never happened.

I've got two teams that I'm genuinely bothered about: the Dolphins haven't won a bean since I started following Marino & the Marks brothers.

Big Leicester City fan - never won a league title in their history (2nd in 1929 is the
closest they've come, but that was a little before my time).

Following Leicester is historically tough - we have a couple of 'quality' statistics: most number of FA Cup finals played without winning the CUP (4), second most Championship victories ever [(6) which means we get relegated a lot as well!]...

But we have never been outside of the top two divisions in our history, have won the League Cup 3 times, and under Martin O'Neill had relative success, being one of only five teams to finish in the top half of the Premiership all four years between 1997-2000, and were only of only five teams to win a trophy during that period (League Cup - twice).

But since then we have had the misfortune of having the managers Peter 'Fuckwit' Taylor ruin the club, and Mickey 'the Muppet' Adams start well, and then operate a footballers' retirement home policy as a substitute for squad building... We now are a mid table rebuilding Championship side...

For an alternative history, written while we were still in the Premiership, look at hxxp://www.mehstg.com/leicest.htm
The facts are unfortunately all right apart from the fact we only lost two play-off finals in a row, not four (we made the play-off final three years straight: losing twice, winning the third; then got relegated again, before immediately getting back to the final and winning again)

U of Washington football: '91 (that looks oh so long ago now in the depths of a 2nd straight awful season)
U of Washington basketball: never (but we're starting to get real good with Romar in charge)

Sonics: '78-79 (I was only 9, but I remember that year and the near miss the year before well)

Seahawks: never (though Holmgren seems to finally have things on the right track)

Mariners: never (man, 2001 was bitter, especially now that we're entering year 3 of the big rebuild)

Tough call. I will go with my first favorite team the Pittsburgh Steelers though. Another team is from my home state, the Iowa Hawkeyes Wrestling team. They won 9 straight NCAA titles in the 70s-80s, and then after a couple years went on another 7 year tear I believe. I am a Man Utd fan as well, but I am not sure what their total silverware tally is.

6-10 times, sort of.

Philadelphia Wings - 6 (Had season tickets for eleven years and only one of those years they didn't make the championship)
Phillies - 1
Flyers - 2 (though I didn't appreciate the wins as much as I would have if they happened 5 years later)
Sixers - 1

Being a Philly fan is tough but I had no idea just how tough when I started getting into sports. At that point the Flyers were always in the playoffs and in the finals many times, the Sixers were always battling some great teams in the playoffs, the Phillies were on the run of division titles and a couple of WS appearances and the Eagles were in the Super Bowl - then things went sour and returned to "normal" for Philly sports.

Edmonton Oilers - 84, 85, 87, 88, and 90
A's - 89 (the only one I've been alive for)
Eagles - never

The last couple of years have been pretty exciting and heart-breaking, all at the same time. Most recently, the Oilers run last season was insane, especially since I live in Edmonton...the whole city was so Oilers' crazy that you couldn't drive by a corner and not see an Oilers' logo displayed in some way or fashion...and to boot, my daughter was born the day of the triple overtime win against the Sharks that sparked the big run to only come up a period short. For a while there, when people asked how old she was I would say that she was 4 or 5 Oiler wins old...LOL!!!

The year before was the Eagles' first SB appearance since I've been a fan (started following the Eagles and the NFL after seeing an NFL Films show about Cunningham) and it was so hard to watch them lose knowing that getting back to that game would be damn near impossible.

And, well, the A's of the last 5 years or so have been great teams during the regular season...well, actually pretty much during August and September...but can never seem to put it all together for the playoffs...when it matters most. So needless to say, I'm getting sick of the "happy to make the playoffs" crap...just win, BABY!!!!

My football Hoosiers (my favorite team in any sport) have me questioning why I even follow sports again. They will always suck. Anyone can see that. Yet, every season, here I am, watching and slipping further into depression. At least Peyton and the Colts won the Super Bowl once. So I now have one trophy on my mantle. Overall, sports fandom has been a real slog.

In my fandom lifetime, still just the White Sox in 2005, unless I count the Bulls during the Jordan years, which I'm not inclined to. I liked them a lot, but wasn't a fan in the truest sense of the word.

It slowed down but still a great 15 years in Boston sports. 8 championships, one I got to see in person (Sox/Rockies in Denver), 4 other times in the final game/series. And my college team Syracuse has one basketball championship and 2 other final four trips. Much better than the 15 years before that (no championships between '86 Celtics and '01 Patriots.)

Nine years ago I voted 'never' and it still applies. We did have the unexpected summers of 2010 and 2014, but I suppose Oranje doesn't fully fit for this particular topic, plus silver and bronze still doesn't equal gold. FC Utrecht remains to be a very unlikely championship team, despite that the big three have been beaten twice since the poll was posted, I don't see Utreg pulling that off anytime soon...
