Two kinds of people…

2012 Edit : THIS IS AN OLD THREAD, NOT A CURRENT GAME TO PLAY, THOUGH READ ON TO SEE TALK OF A REBOOT

Everyone knows the old phrase – “There are two kinds of people in this world…”

It’s then followed by a split based on people’s beliefs, or on how they would answer a certain question. It’s used often a punchline, and equally often as a way to highlight the seeming “importance” of the underlying question or issue.

Well… I’m taking this idea to a logical extension. Below are 20 different “two kinds of people” pairings… and your first task is to go through the list, and identify which of the two you associate with more. For some, it’s just a matter of “which of these things do you like more?” Sometimes, I have included things where the issue is potentially more symbolic a meaning – you might not even have a specific opinions about the two things being weighed – but try to make a judgment based on their symbolism if you can.

I would request that in preparing your selections, you just “copy” the segment of the post below… and then from that, delete the items that you do not select (along with the ellipsis from that row). There, you will have a nice list of your 20 choices.

Next, you are to take this list of 20 choices… and put them in descending order or importance to you. The overall idea is to not only identify your preferences, but also how much you weigh your choices. For the things that were a fairly easy decision, put those high on the list… for the things that were close calls, place them low. Ideally, this is not just a measure of how important the general subject is in your life – but rather how strongly you feel about the two options that were presented.

So, there are two kinds of people in the world… which are you?

Incidentally, much of the credit for this goes to Mrs. Q -- once the idea dawned on me, some weeks ago, she steered the idea substantially, and helped me refine my thinking a lot. Most of the paring down from a longer list of 30 or 35 decent ideas was hers... I thought 20 was a manageable number to ultimately work with.

Here you go, a stream of consciousness type decision making here, I tried to do it quickly and go with my first thought/instinct. The 4 at the top were very emphatic easy choices, and pretty critical ones to me where I truly dislike the other option. The following 2 were easy, but not critical choices. The next 8, from Forrest Gump down through Italian Food were choices that were very clear to me but were pretty insignifigant, as in, I knew which one I preferred the split second I read it, but I don't have a dislike for the other option, or am reasonably indifferent. Starting with the beer they were decisions I really didn't care much about.

I’m thinking that if this turns out to be fairly popular (as I hope), that maybe one of you tech-inclined guys can come up with a little spreadsheet or program that would do a “compatibility rating” for any two submissions.

I have an algorithm in mind already:

For each question, there are two answers. Randomly assign them as positive and negative. So, we might say that Elvis is the positive, and The Beatles are the negative. Then, take the place where you ranked that particular item – assigning a value of 20 to the very top thing on one’s list, and a 1 to the bottom thing. If I enter “Elvis” as the 7th thing on my list… then my entry for the first coupling would essentially be positive 14.

So, another ay of expressing the answers from a person would be a series of positive and negative numbers, in the order that the questions were originally posed. For any two people, you could then just take the product of each question… and then add up the total of those 20 products.

If I say Elvis as my #7 answer (+14) and you say The Beatles as your 15th answer (-6), then our compatibility score for that question would be a negative 84 points. We’re off a to a bad start.

Every time we agree, we’d gain positive points (whether it’s +/+ or -/-, the product is positive) and every time we disagree, we’d be subtracting points. Add them all up, and we ought to have a score – with a distribution centered on zero, where a positive value indicates compatibility… and a negative indicates disagreement.

I have no idea whether opinions on ketchup and mustard translate to anything in particular… but this seems like it might be interesting to explore. If we get a body of responses in the thread… this might be worth working up.

I will actually be bored enough at work in about 25 minutes to do the spreadsheet exactly as QuikSand suggested. Whether I'll do it or not is another story (I bet somebody will beat me to it). This should be good.

Night owl (no hesitation on this one)
Pepperoni (this is the absolute ends of the spectrum for my toppings)

Los Angeles
South Park
Swedish women
Scenic route
Paris (Never been to Tokyo, but loved Paris)

Forrest Gump (althrough I do like Pulp Fiction as well)

The Beatles (not too into either)
Spidey

(edited to include Spiderman and I failed to read the rules all the way through)

Brazilian women

The choices in bold are the ones that were toss-ups in my mind, so their overall scale of importance is at the bottom. I mean if it ever comes down to Swedish or Brazilian women for me, I've lived a good life.

As for what this says about me... I guess some of the answers contradict themselves if you look at the symbolism of the answers. For instance I chose the Scenic Route over the Make Good Time, but then I chose New York over L.A, and Pulp Fiction over Forrest Gump. These are simply preferences to me. I like New York more than L.A, but I don't think it's because of the pace, probably more of the general culture/history of the area. I like Pulp Fiction more for the same reasons, not that Forrest Gump isn't a good movie, it's just that Pulp Fiction is one of my favorites. As for the rest of them, I'm not sure what to make of them. I know that I've always been a back row guy though, my whole life. I hate the front row.

Nice to see that you paid such close attention, though.

I feel no need to be constrained by your narrow minded rules, simply to be pigeonholed. I paid attention, I'm just not good at following rules I find pointless.

The Simpsons -- to me, if somebody doesn't like the Simpsons, I probably will have a hard time getting along with them, as they most likely won't get my sense of humor - I equate South Park as base/bathroom humor, whereas the Simpsons is more clever humor. Or at least it used to be.

Since there is no "no beer" option, I'm screwed trying to answer this...

Well, I tried to explain this above...

What I'd hope is that you can take the associations of the specific answers to break your tie. Sure, you'll rate this one low on your list ... but in areas other than beer, are you generally inclined to pay more for something that you believe to be of a bit higher quality? Are you generally inclined to believe that things from abroad are of better quality than those from here in the US? Would you pay more for, say, imported spices or imported coffee or imported fabrics? (I'm trying to phrase this as fairly as I can)

If you scoff at all these things... then I think it might be fair to respond "Domestic beer" even if you don't drink any beer. And if you are willing to pay premium prices for what you believe to be premium quality in other things... then perhaps "Imported beer" is the best answer here.

Hope that helps - don't want people to feel as though they can't play/participate just because they aren't coffee drinkers, beer drinkers, world travelers, or whatever. Broaden the question, and then rank it low as need be.

sterlingice

Ok, didn't get in those last two but here's the chart as it stands:

http://www.sunflower.com/~sterlingice/compat.htm

Inherent flaws: while you rank them in order of importance, there should be a 2nd dimension of how much you favor that thing (ie if black coffee vs with cream and sugar is a small preference at #1 over how you strongly hate Sammy at #2- in this poll, you'd line up better with the black coffee drinking Van Haggar fan than a DLR loving guy who is similarly indifferent about his cream and sugar).

If you aren't on the list, you were missing at least 1 item or had something silly like "both" or "don't care" or had something which was too much work to format.

Max is 2870. The "blue" results mean you had more than half that. The red results mean you had more than a quarter negative.

First perspectives...

Lots more positives than negatives, which suggests to me that there was some (inevitable) bias toward certain answers. If 90% of respondents anser "$10 haircut" as seems to be the case, then that's almost always (82% of the time) going to yield a positive value, the only real issue will be how strongly it was prioritized by the two people. Looks like the night owls with cheap haircuts are all ordering pepperoni on their pizzas... so it goes.

I'm also guessing that a few people didn't bother to sort their answers... so they might tend to have a skewed relationship - especially with one another. So, that probably ought to get ironed out at some point.

Thanks for putting together the comparisons, though... pretty interesting.

I think this is an illuminating exercise, but I too wonder about slam-dunk decisions because you really like something versus slam-dunk decisions because you hate something else, and conversely tough decisions because you like somethings equally.

For example, I hate David Lee Roth so Sammy Hagar ranks ahead of The Beatles, even though I like Beatles better than Sammy Hagar, but the gap between how much I like Sammy Hagar versus disklike DLR is greater than the gap between how much I like The Beatles and how much I like Elvis. Conversely, Italian and Mexican are two of my favorite foods and it's easily the biggest coin flip on the board for me, so it ranks last. But I don't like beer or coffee but if I did it would be imported and sugar/cream, so they rate higher in this ranking than Italian/Mexican which I like infinitely better than any of the coffee/beer choies. So compute that. :)

I wouldn't say there's a right or wrong answer there, really. The two guys, coming from (in name, atleast) the same band, have extremely diffrent takes on what matters in music. Genesis was a dramatically different band after Gabriel left, as Collins became the driving influence. Seem to me the fundamental differences between the two guys while in the band is pretty much the same as the difference between the two guys when solo... but that's left as an exercise for the participant. No wrong answers here.

(My judgment is certainly clouded by the fact that this was probably the top item on my list - certainly in the top two or three, I don't actually remember)

Based on your explanation, in theory I should go with Gabriel, but I don't like his Genesis stuff and don't care one way or the other about his solo stuff, and with Collins, while I detest what he's become, I still like some late 70s/early 80s Genesis. So I picked Phil.

The Simpsons -- to me, if somebody doesn't like the Simpsons, I probably will have a hard time getting along with them, as they most likely won't get my sense of humor - I equate South Park as base/bathroom humor, whereas the Simpsons is more clever humor. Or at least it used to be.
I love the Simpsons, but I've come to enjoy South Park more. If you really think the Simpsons is that much more clever than South Park, you obviously haven't watched SP. It may have more of a juvenile way of being clever, but the fact that it's on cable has allowed it be more vulgar AND more topical on controversial subjects. If you were making this argument between the Simpsons and Family Guy, I could completely understand it (even though I love FG, too). But South Park...no way.

Peter Gabriel Acknowledges Meeting With Genesis To Discuss Possible Reunion!

Steve Hackett has recently stated in interviews that there was a possibility of a Genesis reunion and that there was to be a meeting with former band members to discuss this long-anticipated event. This was confirmed by Peter Gabriel on the tabloid television show Extra yesterday. Gabriel, who was promoting his forthcoming concert DVD, Still Growing Up: Live and Unwrapped (due November 15th in North America), was asked about a Genesis reunion and commented that the meeting Hackett referred to will be taking place - although no specific meeting date was mentioned. Stay tuned for details as we get them!

And from another story about comments Hackett made:

"Hackett said the reunion would include original singer Peter Gabriel , drummer-vocalist Phil Collins , guitarist-bassist Mike Rutherford , and keyboardist Tony Banks ."

So, you CAN have Gabriel and Collins at the same time. Worlds will collide!<!--IBF.ATTACHMENT_272735--><!--QuoteEnd-->

Mrs. Q sent me hers... I was pleased to see that she and I agreed on 15 out of 20 things. (Including Brazilian women, though discouragingly low on her list, it turns out)

I'd just like to say that I heard Just a Gigilo on the ride home today and reminded me why I like Dave. Just plain fun, in a nice goofy way.

Uh...yeah. But who honestly thought they'd be together in the band again, given the way their careers have gone down divergent paths?

It's always about the money though, both parties could reallllly use a little media coverage right now. http://dynamic.gamespy.com/%7Efof/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif

I'm still not sure why I took Phil Collins over Peter Gabriel, unless I did take the question as to the better stint in Genesis.

This would be fun to reboot. But every time I read this thread title and the author, I think, "There are two kinds of people in the world: those who hate Billy Joel and those who don't."
