View Full Version : T.O. suspended indefinitely?

I am watching the Minn/Ind game and I could have sworn the announcers just said T.O. has been suspended regarding yesterday's remarks. Anyone have a link, I have him on my fantasy team.

Yes, he has been suspended for his comments this week. No word yet as to what he'll have to do to get back on the field.

This seems like an overreaction. T.O. works hard. His teammates have learned to tune out his off-the-field comments, just like the Red Sox tune out Manny Ramirez's occasional brain cramps. This is going to kill morale.

Jim,

The problem is his constant ripping of McNabb. The Eagles look as though they've grown tired of it and are calling it a day and wiping their hands clean of the situation.

There are many who believe TO is saying these things because he wants to make sure the Eagles don't pick up that option next year. Well, it looks like the Eagles are making the first strike. If they charge him with two conducts detrimental to the team and win, TO won't get a penny the rest of the year.

I'm not surprised by the move at all.

I agree, Owens should realize that his getting suspended would hurt the team and should not have overreacted to not getting the royal treatment on his 100th TD catch. He should have learned from ealier mistakes to know when to just shut up and play ball.

I disagree. He has been suspended for a cumulative pattern of slamming McNabb, slamming the organization, and pronouncing himself unlikely to play for the next 2 weeks. I don't think this is an overreaction. I think this is overdue. It will hurt the Eagles in the short term, but I don't think all of the Eagles were tuning out Owens, and I think it was negatively affecting the team to an extent. I actually expect the team to rally together, but am not sure if McNabb's health will allow that to translate into a win this upcoming week.

Im wondering if Reid is planning to hold him out the entire year ala Gruden and Keyshawn. Im sure someone will pick him up after the season if the Eagles do cut ties... but he just lost whatever leverage he had for a new deal with any team I would think.

I'm sure, from initial reaction here and on the pundit shows, that my opinion here is not the majority one.

For whatever reason, the same traits that make some (but not all) players excellent wide receivers also make them arrogant, egotistical dinkwhistles.

It may be the only football position where as long as you put in the work, you can be in your own universe.

Some players even use that to their own advantage. For example, Randy Moss was criticized for taking plays off early in his career. Now, he sometimes fakes like he's taking a play off, then blows by the corner for an easy reception.

As long as the Eagles players are happy with him on the field, his running mouth is not going to hurt the team. Donovan McNabb is mature enough to shrug off these comments. He's the unquestioned team leader, and his teammates will look to him for how to handle T.O.'s outbursts. So far, so good. Owens has been the target on 31% of Philadelphia's pass plays (32% the last five weeks). The Eagles have been most productive on those pass plays.

That's really all the players care about. T.O. works hard. He earned their respect tenfold by making himself ready for the Super Bowl last year. He's been very effective this season, when nothing else seems to be working for them

I think this is a huge mistake, and kills their season. This should have been handled much differently.

Well played.....

Say what you want, but I seriously doubt his Teammates are upset as a whole. Regardless of talent, a player that thinks he is above the team is always eventually detrimental to team chemistry and it gets worse when you are not winning.

This crap starts in High School now and we had to cut ties with a Kid last season that could have been an all-Region and possible all-State running back if only he would have abided by the rules that the other 40 odd Kids on the roster had no problem with........

Well, that and kickers, of whom it is expected. Correction -- drunken kickers.

I don't know ... everything I seem to see and hear about the Eagles suggest that it's 52 guys and then there's TO. I think the fear is that what happened in San Francisco will happen here, which is that to went unchecked long enough and ripped his quarterback long enough that it eventually became a distraction.

Philly can win ball games without TO for a period of time. I think they need each other equally. Owens is headed toward exile like Randy Moss in oblivion. But can they win a Super Bowl without him? I doubt it.

I don't know what the right answer is. I don't fault the Eagles for trying this. Hands off didn't work in San Francisco, so maybe tough love will work. Maybe they just need to have Kyle Boller throw him a couple of passes off line to him to make him realize McNabb is a fine quarterback and to shut his pie hole.

I disagree they can win ball games without him for a period of time. Their receivers are too banged up or inexperienced to function.

I don't have a big problem with the Eagles suspending TO. I think it's maybe a bit OTT and certainly shooting themselves in the foot. With that recieving corps there will be lucky to make the playoffs IF he's gone for the year.

But what I can't understand is what part of this situation they didn't see when they signed him? If this sort of stuff is going to bother Reid enough to suspend him, why the hell sign him? Did they just think he was misunderstood?

It all depends.

This is kind of to Jim as well.

Doesn't this all come down to the guys in the locker room? If they were fed up and had enough, management had to do something. The Eagles are a good football team, despite their recent struggles.

The funny thing is, if this thing only lasts two or three weeks, this is going to help them bigtime as they make a push for the playoffs and beyond. It doesn't take a football strategist to see why either. They are going to have to run the ball more now. They have a good OLine and they have some good RB's. They WILL run the ball if they stick with it.

May not be pretty for the first couple of weeks, but it will happen.

Still, to me this all comes down to the players on the team. If they'd had enough, then the Eagles had to do what they did.

I don't know what I think. I think it's an overreaction, but also that, TO should shut his mouth. I think he might know that they're not going to win after this or for any sustained period of time, making him look even better. Sorta like Moss with the way the Vikings are looking now. Everyone made him out to be some sort of cancer, but look at that boondoggle there.

Philly isn't that situation, but does anyone seriously think they're going to win without him? They couldn't win the big game WITH him.

Antmeister
11-05-2005, 09:34 PM
This is why I can't stand TO. When he knows he is valuable to a team, he tries to push the envelope to see what he can get away with. It is most likely true that they will win less games without him, but if they allow him to continue on this path, other players are likely to follow his example if they did nothing about it, and that would be bad for any organization. I don't think they had too much of a choice but to suspend him.

JimboJ
11-05-2005, 09:37 PM
I gotta agree with Jim on this.

We put microphones in front of these athletes faces and ask them questions, and they either answer with a bunch of worn out cliches, or they tell you how they really feel. And most of the time when they give an honest answer to the question, we get all self-rightous about it.

Yes, TO is an ass, but we already knew that along time ago, didn't we? The fact is the Eagles brought him in here despite that fact, because the guy can flat out play. They were willing to put up with his shit, in order to increase their odds of winning a Super Bowl. Appararently they aren't willing to put up with it any more.

Personally, I couldn't care less what a player says or does off the field, as long as he gives 100% on Sunday. The only time I would have a problem with something an athlete says is if he becomes a cancer to the team.

I know what you're thinking: TO = cancer. I've been following this whole TO thing very carefully, and every indication is that he is not dividing the team in any way. As far as I can tell, there are no players taking sides with him. He is pretty much out on his own island. And I think we're not giving professional athletes enough credit. I think they are very capable of ignoring TO's bullshit, and going out and doing their job every week. I think when he spouts off, his teammates look at him, say "what an asshole", and then go back to ignoring him. If he's a cancer, at least he's not spreading.

When TO is on the field, the only person who can't ignore him is his QB. And every indication is that McNabb is very capable of putting aside their differences when they are out on the field, and getting the football to him.

If TO was my son, or a member of my family, I would not be very proud of him as a person. But the truth is, TO wouldn't know me from the Pope. He only cares that I show up on Sunday to cheer for him. And my only expectation from him is for him to show up and give me something to cheer for.

It might not have been just Terrell Owens' fighting words that led to his suspension from the Eagles.

It seems a fistfight also contributed to his being banished indefinitely.

TO SPEAKS OUT

Excerpts from Graham Bensinger's exclusive interview with Terrell Owens for ESPN.com:
Owens talks about ...
• How Donovan McNabb's struggles have affected the Eagles ESPN Motion
• Playing hurt in the Super Bowl and a secret waiver ESPN Motion
• Interview transcript
Owens got into a fight on Wednesday with former Eagles defensive end and current team ambassador Hugh Douglas, the Trenton Times reported and ESPN's Chris Mortensen confirmed Sunday.

A team source told Mortensen that Douglas, whose post with the Eagles he re-titled "bad-ass-ador," entered the team's training room Wednesday and announced "I know there are people in here faking injuries." The comment apparently led to the scrum between Owens and Douglas.

One source told the Times the fight "was like WWE Smackdown." Another source told the paper both Douglas and Owens threw at least two punches before Owens challenged quarterback Donovan McNabb and then everyone else in the room, saying "You want some? Anyone else want some?"

The scrap is just another incident in a week of unrest that led to Owens being suspended indefinitely for conduct detrimental to the team on Saturday.

Early in the week, Owens apprised Philadelphia officials that he had sprained his ankle in last Sunday's loss to the Denver Broncos, and might require some time off. One day later, he was back at practice and seemingly prepared to play against the Redskins.

On Thursday, Owens blasted McNabb and the organization in an ESPN.com interview which spurred a Friday meeting with Eagles coach Andy Reid.

On Friday, Mortensen reports, Reid gave Owens three stipulations: Apologize to the organization, the team and to McNabb.

McNabb told ESPN's Suzy Kolber he called a team meeting Friday, which Owens attended, to discuss the team's unrest and pronounced to all, looking at T.O. directly, "You're either with me or against me."

Owens' apologies in private to the club and in public on Friday apparently did not meet Reid's standards and T.O. was suspended on Saturday.

According to the paper, Owens and Douglas have been at odds since training camp where they almost got into an altercation in an elevator at Lehigh University. Douglas was among the few players to publicly say Owens should honor his current contract when T.O. demanded a new one this past offseason.

The Eagles declined to comment about the bout.

In seven games this season, Owens has 47 catches for 763 yards and six touchdowns.

This is the second time Owens has been suspended during his controversial 10-year career. While a 49er in 2000, he was suspended one game by San Francisco coach Steve Mariucci following his touchdown celebrations on the Cowboys' star logo at the center of Texas Stadium.

Good on Andy Reid for suspending him...I know what he brings to the team, and that he is a great talent, but he is ripping the Eagles' locker room apart, something that has been a strength of the Eagles since Reid took over...

I was of the opinion that he needed to go after the stuff in training camp...they need to get rid of him now, regardless of the consequences for this season.

So I just heard on SportsTalk 980 that CBS had some flashing news that "TO isn't in fact suspended for tonight's game versus the Redskins and that Andy Reid is trying to 'keep his options open.'"

If the Eagles DID suspend him and are now going back on that, I must say that's the lamest thing I've heard of a team doing. He is the type of person that they needed to take action and not be pushed around by their player.

Also, FWIW, I was watching ESPNEWS this morning and they said that TO put his house up on the market in Philly for 4 million, so it appears he's doing all he can to get the heck out of there...

I can't seem to find anywhere that TO has in fact been "let off the hook," so I'll assume that what I heard on 980 was a weird wrong announcement until it's proven otherwise.

I also was floating around on ESPN.com and saw this article where all of the ESPN analysts weigh in on the "loss" of TO. I actually think this is a good read, and to save you all from having to go to the monstrosity of the website that is ESPN.com, I've pasted it here. Great talent, but not worth the trouble
<hr noshade="noshade" size="1" width="100%"> ESPN.com

Whether he's been dancing on the Cowboys' star logo at Texas Stadium's midfield, calling out his quarterbacks in San Francisco and Philadelphia or taking repeated shots at the Eagles as an organization, Terrell Owens (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=3664) has been quite the controversial figure in his 10-year NFL career. Our Bristol experts weigh in on the latest Owens controversy and his tenure in the city known (almost all of the time) for brotherly love.

Theismann: Time to grow up, shut up, or leave

I left meetings with the Eagles coaches and players at 6:45 p.m ET. These meetings were set up for our Sunday Night Football game between the Eagles and the Redskins. Of course, once the news was announced that T.O. was suspended, the meetings took on an entirely different spin because now we wanted to know what the players and coaches were thinking about this new situation. Lemme tell you, there is a sense of relief on this team now that Owens is gone for however long. <table align="right" border="0" cellspacing="0"><tbody><tr><td width="2">
</td><td width="65">http://espn.go.com/i/columnists/theismann_joe_m.jpg</td></tr><tr><td width="2">
</td><!--<td width=35>Theismann</td>--></tr></tbody></table>

Owens has taken the fun out of the Eagles. This is a team that features a fun-loving Donovan McNabb, an always-smiling Jeremiah Trotter, and Brian Westbrook, who always seems happy. Owens' constant harping and complaining had taken its toll on this team because it never knew what was going to happen next. He was the Grinch Who Stole Christmas on this team. The Eagles are already in a dire situation because they are a beat-up football team playing in a division that is the class of the NFL. The last thing this team needs is more distractions, particularly from a guy who should be a leader on this team. Today was a perfect example, because instead of having game-planning sessions with the crew from SNF, they had to deal with other issues.

Over the past four years the Eagles have built a family organization that has allowed players to leave and come back. Sure, they have been strict in their business dealings, but that's why this team has been so successful over the past few seasons. Hugh Douglas left the Eagles and went to play for the Jaguars, and he told me he talked to his friends on the Eagles every day before he came back. The Eagles are the essence of a family in the NFL and Owens either doesn't get it or doesn't want to get it.

It's a shame, really, because Owens is the most physically gifted receiver in the game today. He's big, fast, tough, strong, has great hands, and wants to be the best, but he's stupid. It absolutely amazes me that someone who has so much to give to a team continues to take away. Never in my 31 years around the professional game of football have I seen such a waste and such a degree of selfishness.

My hat is off to Andy Reid and McNabb because they are class acts dealing with a guy who has no class. As much as Owens thinks that this game revolves around him, he's sadly mistaken and the tragedy is he's going to wake up some day and realize the game of professional football doesn't need him and neither does McNabb. Owens needs McNabb a whole lot more than McNabb needs him.

The biggest question is still left to be answered, and that's what happens to T.O. after this? Precedent was set by Jon Gruden when he let Keyshawn Johnson leave the team when he wouldn't accept the team concept. The next season, Johnson was with the Dallas Cowboys and his old coach Bill Parcells. I'm not sure who would want Owens, though. He's thrown Jeff Garcia under the bus and waited for the buses to line up to pick up kids to throw McNabb under them. If I was a quarterback and he became my teammate, I'd look out for buses because nothing has changed. This is just T.O. being T.O. It's time for him to grow up, shut up or leave.
-- Joe Theismann

Salisbury: Happy occasion for Philly

I couldn't be happier for the Philadelphia Eagles (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=phi) organization for finally making the right choice and getting rid of T.O. If I was the coach of the Eagles, I would make sure this was a permanent suspension and that the fans of the Eagles would never see Owens in an Eagles uniform again. <table align="right" border="0" cellspacing="0"><tbody><tr><td width="2">
</td><td width="65">http://espn.go.com/i/columnists/salisbury_sean_m.jpg</td></tr><tr><td width="2">

Owens isn't just a cancer, he's a terminal cancer in a locker room. He has the maturity of a 7-year-old and it looks like he'll never mature. I used to think he was worth the trouble, but he's proven me wrong as he went from punking his teammates to punking the organization. He's the ultimate I-guy in a game that is the ultimate we-sport. I'm tired of hearing him blame the way he acts on his upbringing, because there are tons of players in the NFL who act like teammates who have had similar upbringings. He needs to stop using that as an excuse because it's completely bogus. He's officially alienated everyone now and has become the most reviled person in sports. Heck, the perception of Barry Bonds (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=3918) (who I happen to like) is of a choirboy compared to Owens right now.

What's really sad is how predictable Owens has become, though. This is the exact same script he followed in San Francisco, where he started out by taking shots at the quarterback (Jeff Garcia (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=4924)) and then turned on the rest of the locker room. Everything is everybody else's fault and there's no way that he's to blame for anything.

I remember when Owens was leaving the 49ers and couldn't stop talking about how much he loved Donovan McNabb (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=4650). Now he acts like the guy ran over his dog or something. Let's be honest here -- this isn't about McNabb or Garcia, it's about Owens. If he was with the Patriots he'd hate Tom Brady (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=5228), if he was with the Colts he'd hate Peyton Manning (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=4256). Heck, if he was with the Packers he'd hate Brett Favre (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=1025). This is who Owens is and no team should have to stand for it because as great a receiver as he is, he's 10 times worse as a teammate.

I will say this: I don't blame the Eagles organization for taking a chance by bringing him into the fold. He's a great talent and his problems with the 49ers at the time could've been a one-time thing. The Eagles thought he was the missing link to their hopes of winning the NFC championship and possibly a Super Bowl. They did win an NFC title even though he didn't play in it because of injury, and he performed exceptionally well in the Super Bowl. But it's time for the nonsense to stop. I can't see a way where he can be a part of the Eagles next season.

I just wish he was on one of the old Raiders or Steelers teams where a guy like Howie Long or Mean Joe Greene would slam him against a locker and tell him to just shut up and play football.
-- Sean Salisbury

Schlereth: Eagles will be better without T.O.

Terrell Owens' suspension is a message from the organization to the rest of the team. If the Eagles are going to make the playoffs, then they are going to do it as a cohesive unit. This could be a galvanizing moment for this coaching staff and the 52 other players on the team. This could get everybody refocused because there are two types of people in the world: energy drainers and energy enhancers. Owens is an energy drainer and he's sucked the life out of this organization with his constant complaining and harping. <table align="right" border="0" cellspacing="0"><tbody><tr><td width="2">
</td><td width="65">http://espn.go.com/i/columnists/schlereth_mark_m.jpg</td></tr><tr><td width="2">
</td><!--<td width=35>Schlereth</td>--></tr></tbody></table>

This is a better football team without him because, first and foremost, you can't have a guy that selfish and that big of a distraction on a team and expect to be successful. He detracts from what the Eagles need to do as a team. He's a large part of the reason why this team has lost its offensive balance and looks to pass all the time. His great talent, combined with his ability to whine if the ball doesn't come his way, forces a team to get him the ball. Now the Eagles are going to have to become more reliant on the running game and become a more balanced football team. Everyone says that Brian Westbrook (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=5977) can't take the pounding, but Warrick Dunn (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=3893) has proven that a little running back can do it. This organization must start making it a priority to run the football if it wants to return to greatness. I don't think Westbrook has ever gotten the opportunity to carry the ball 22 or 23 times a game and that's wrong. I'm sure that, if given the opportunity, he can be quite effective and will continue to be one of the most dangerous players in football. Sometimes those shifty guys can make people miss in between the tackles. The presence of a running game would also take pressure off the injured McNabb. Right now, he's taking way too many hits because this team chooses to throw the ball so often. With an effective running game, most of those hits will go away.

That said, there will be another team out there that will take a chance on him because he's one of the most supremely gifted athletes in the world. There will be a team out there that believes it can utilize his skills, but it's going to see the same attitude from him that he showed in Philadelphia and San Francisco.
-- Mark Schlereth

Hoge: Bridge 'completely' burned

When the Eagles and coach Andy Reid allowed Owens to come back after a chaotic offseason spent bashing the organization and players, they set themselves up for this to happen. I said then that the organization was going to have to deal with the T.O. mess eventually, and now Philadelphia is dealing with him. This team should've put its foot down earlier and made sure this didn't happen again by either trading him or suspending him for a couple games.

Instead, the Eagles sent him home, let him off with a lazy apology and showed him that he was more important than the team. That was a mistake, but it's good to see that they've rectified it, albeit too late.

What's really sad is that Owens is an amazingly talented receiver. He puts in a ton of time making sure that he's in great shape and he could've owned the city if he would've kept his mouth shut. This is a town that wants a championship badly and wants players who are hard workers and who play hard every play. After his great play in the Super Bowl it was all set up for him. Instead of recognizing this, he alienated yet another set of fans.

If the Eagles are smart, they'll try to get a power running back for Owens. Unfortunately for them, if the Randy Moss (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=4262) trade is any barometer, the market for a talented but troublesome receiver may be limited.

FWIW, the fight and the Theismann comments (I can't believe I'd listen to him on anything) pretty much echos my feelings on this. I though all along it wasn't just the comments that did it again. I think he has taken his toll on the guys in that locker room. It'll be interesting to see how they come out tonight.

So I just heard on SportsTalk 980 that CBS had some flashing news that "TO isn't in fact suspended for tonight's game versus the Redskins and that Andy Reid is trying to 'keep his options open.'"
This is correct, but he is not playing tonight. He's inactive, but not suspended. The "keeping options open" referred to future weeks.

Is it possible that T.O. is bona fide mentally ill?

Hmm. That seems pretty weak by the Eagles organization.

I know they want to win games, so I suppose I understand, but still...

It is starting to look like that report was erroneous. He was indeed suspended for last night's game.

Watching Monday Quarterback today, I realized this is why the NFL is better than the NBA. Jon Gruden had the support of Tampa when he benched Keyshawn for the year. Andy Reid or the Eagles are doing the same thing to TO. If this had been the NBA, either Reid or McNabb would've been fired at the end of the season, possibly both. (See the Lakers)
