HAMBURG, Germany (AP) -- WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko has retired because of a knee injury, his former promoter said on its Web site Wednesday.

Klitschko pulled out of Saturday's title defense against Hasim Rahman when he tore ligaments while sparring last week in Los Angeles. He was fitted with a brace, but later canceled the fight with Rahman scheduled for Nov. 12 in Las Vegas.

The decision to end with the sport was hard to make. But I would like to end my career on the top and with my retirement make the way free for my successor,'' Klitschko said in a statement released by Universum Promotions.

The injury will require six months to heal, but the WBC gave Klitschko three months to recover -- after which it would award the title to Rahman.

The Ukraine-born fighter, who was 35-2 with 34 knockouts, underwent surgery on his knee Tuesday in Inglewood, Calif.

``Unfortunately, I've been fighting injuries recently more than facing rivals in the ring,'' Klitschko said.

Klitschko and Rahman were originally scheduled to fight April 30, but Klitschko pulled out because of a thigh injury.

But WBC president Jose Sulaiman said Monday that the most recent cancellation actually was the fourth time Klitschko backed out of a fight with Rahman. Rahman grew so tired of waiting to fight Klitschko that he took a bout with Monte Barrett in August. Rahman won on a decision to become the WBC's interim champion, meaning he would be declared champion if Klitschko didn't fight him. Klitschko has not fought since stopping Danny Williams in the first defense of his title last December.

Does "retirement" for a boxer actually mean anything? Is this different than "I'm too hurt to fight right now, so I can't meet the terms of the WBC... so I'll have to give up th belt" in any meaningful way?

well.. he has no history to go on as far as retirement.. so i guess you have to take him at his word.. and if he does stay out.. good for him

It could be one of those, "hey I am going to lose my belt anyway, so I might as well go out on top, and after a couple of years, if I am healthy again, I may fight again," deals. His mentality is different than most fighters. To him, his health is more important than boxing.

I don't mean to sound hostile... it's just that a "retirement" from a boxer doesn't seem to mean anything. It's just saying "I don't think I'll fight any more." A contrast from athletes in team sports, where a retirement announcement brings about some change in plans for the team affected, and potentially upends an existing contract.

I know rather little about boxing, and even less about Klitschko -- this is just a more general comment about the nature of the sport. There is absolutely nothing, it seems, to keep a boxer (any boxer) from announcing a "retirement" every year or two and then making a "comeback" right afterwards once he either gets back in shape or decides he wants some more cash.

It has to do with the way that pro boxing is run. FIghters only get paid when they fight. Many of them come up from the less desireable parts of society. The vast majority of fighters never see the big money fights, so it ends up being a job more or less. A fighter who does see the big money is surrounded by so many corrupt, and hangers on, that they rarely do the right thing with the money that they make anyway.

In most team sports a player cannot play after his prime. He is either a liability to the team, too expensive, or he realizes that he has made enough money and the game isn't worth it anymore.

In boxing, a fighter fights for himself. Even if he is old, if he once was a marketable person (ie. Tommy Hearns, Larry Holmes, Vinny Pazienza) he can make money on his name alone, irregardless if his skills are there or not. To top it off, noone is there looking out for his health, as a lot of people get paid if he fights. And if he does retire, he may be able to be talked into coming out of retirement for one more payday. This is portrayed well in Rocky V.

I just about ran into Vitali not 10 minutes ago in JFK. He was posing for a picture with some fans and most everyone around was wondering who the hell he was. I gotta tell you as a big boxing fan, that was a cool moment.

I am a huge fan of the Klitschko brothers. I am hoping they are each able to hold half the heavyweight belts.

I don't think you're really following what Quik is saying. In a sense, there's no difference in boxing between "retiring" and "taking your time in between picking bouts because of a personal choice, injury, wanting to bang a bunch of broads, etc."
