View Full Version : At the halfway point, who do you see as the NFC's #1 Seed.

At this point I'd seed them:
1. Panthers
2. Seahawks
3. Giants

EDIT -- Ok, I'll give you the Bears and the Buccs. But anyone else? Sorry.

Seattle may play in the NFC West, but they also play each the strongest NFC division this year. So far they are 1-1 against the Redskins and Cowboys with the Giants and Eagles coming up on the schedule (not to mention Indy).
That said, I'd consider them the #2 or #3 seed right now. If they can beat St. Louis this weekend, which would basically equate to winning the division rather than making it a dog fight the rest of the way, I could see them being the #1 or #2 seed in the NFC come the end of the year. Lose this weekend and not only do you reintroduce the Rams into the division hunt, but the Hawks would likely lose their shot at the first round bye, at best hosting a game in the Wildcard round.

How can I be the only one that voted for the Bears? They play great defense, and are in the most awful division in the league. I'd say they have as much, or more of a chance to win the NFC than any of the 6-2 teams.

Start with the fact that they play Carolina, at Tampa Bay, at Pittsburgh, and Atlanta (along with the Packers twice, the Niners, and at Minnesota). And I believe Thomas Jones is banged up. Defense only goes so far...somebody has to put some points on the board.

They should be able to beat Carolina at home, Atlanta at home (especially since it'll be cold and outdoors), the Packers, Vikings, and 49ers. Even if they lose one of those games, they'd still be 11-5, and I think that would win them the conference. We'll see I guess.
Why in the hell am I defending the Bears anyway? I hope they lose the rest of their games, and the Lions win the divison with a 6-10 record.

Carolina @ home=win because of what????
Atlanta beat GB in the playoffs outdoors at Lambeau Field--I don't think that the weather will be a deterrent to a run first team with mutiple running weapons.
The Bears will be right with my Redskins @ 10-6 or 9-7 when all is said and done. The Packer and Vikings are bad teams, but those are division games nonetheless and I can't see them making it as easy as your making it sound like it should.
You also overlooked the Pittsburgh Steelers and TB Buccaneers on the schedule, along with the fact that they have played 2 teams with winning records (Redskins and Bengals), which were both losses. Just my 2 cents.

Carolina @ home=win because of what????.
Because I don't think Carolina will be able to put up many points against the Bears defense, and the Bears will be able to pound out a win at home. I really think Benson will start taking off, especially with Jones out. I've already seen flashes in the games I've seen. Of course, neither of us knows what will happen.

First things first: examining the schedules the rest of the way. Who do they have remaining with records of .500 or better?
GIANTS (6-2)
Eagles (4-4)
at Seahawks (6-2)
Cowboys (5-3)
at Eagles (4-4)
Chiefs (5-3)
at Redskins (5-3)
Fairly rough, and they also have to go to Oakland in Week 17. They can't let up. Still, 4-2 in the games above and 2-0 in the others looks very possible for a 12-4 finish.
SEAHAWKS (6-2)
Rams (4-4)
Giants (6-2)
at Eagles (4-4)
Colts (8-0)
Tough ones at home against NY and Ind, but three bottom-feeders left on the schedule, too. Overall, schedule looks quite favorable for them, plus they already have wins over #1 seed contenders Atlanta and Dallas. Assuming they beat the Rams at home, a home win over the Giants or a road win over the Eagles puts them on course for 12-4. Win both of those (which appear winnable) and they really should finish 13-3.
FALCONS (6-2)
Buccaneers (5-3)
at Panthers (6-2)
at Bears (5-3)
at Bucs (5-3)
Panthers (6-2)
Some favorable breaks between big games, except Weeks 16 & 17 Bucs then Panthers, although and extra day of prep for Carolina at home could be vital. Should win at home over TB, and should be favored at Chicago and TB. The two Carolina games will be the difference-makers, along with reacting to playing on Thanksgiving. Anywhere from 10-6 to 13-3 looks possible, with 11-5 or 12-4 looking to be most likely.
PANTHERS (6-2)
at Bears (5-3)
Falcons (6-2)
Bucs (5-3)
Cowboys (5-3)
at Falcons (6-2)
Very similar schedule to that of the Falcons. Where the two of them stack up will probably come down to the two games between 'em, although Carolina's schedule is slightly more favorable than Atlanta's. They should finish 11-5 at the very worst, but 13-3 or even 14-2 seem possible, especially if playoff seeds are pretty much set by the time they visit Atlanta in week 17. If the division title is still up for grabs then, though, look for a Falcon win.
REDSKINS (5-3)
at Bucs (5-3)
SD (5-4)
at Rams (4-4)
Cowboys (5-3)
Giants (6-2)
at Eagles (4-4)
Some quality teams in there, but not the toughest schedule, either. Of the 5-3 teams, they seem to have the best shot at a run at 11-5/12-4.
COWBOYS (5-3)
at Eagles (4-4)
Broncos (6-2)
at Giants (6-2)
Chiefs (5-3)
at Redskins (5-3)
at Panthers (6-2)
Rams (4-4)
Says here that there's no way they make up a game on four teams and beat out three other teams with whom they're tied with that schedule. They'll be fortunate to go 5-3 in the second half for a 10-6 finish. I see 8-8 or 9-7 being much more likely.
BEARS (5-3)
Panthers (6-2)
at Bucs (5-3)
at Steelers (6-2)
Falcons (6-2)
They've got the Packers twice and the Niners, too. Still, they have to steal two of the four mentioned above to get to 11-5, and I don't see that happening.
So....all that being said:
1. Seattle
2. NFC South Champ (Carolina/Atlanta)
3, NY Giants
4. Da Bears
Wild Card 1: Carolina/Atlanta
Wild Card 2: Redskins

Well seeing as how Dallas plays Carolina which will take care of that game to make up quick fast and in a hurry, and the Giants have already lost to us we will hold the tie breaker over them with another win, that leaves the Seahawks and the Falcons. We will need a better record than the Seahawks since we went to sleep in lost to them in 15 seconds. The Falcons will likely be the top seed. Seattle wins the West. Dallas wins the East. Falcons win the South. Bears win the North. Giants and Panthers are wild cards. No way in hell the Redskins or Eagles make the playoffs.

A lot of people are overlooking the fact that Carolina has a habit of pissing all over themselves and curling up in the fetal position when they play the Falcons. That's precisely why I didn't make a pick between those two teams. The combined X-factors of which Vick will show up and will Carolina choke again make it too tough to call for me. I can easily envision either team sweeping the other.

Carolina has an awfully big bandwagon for a team that hasn't really done a whole lot. They've lost to the 2-7 Saints & 3-5 Dolphins, they beat the 1-7 Packers by 3 points, the 2-6 Cardinals by 4 points, and needed a last minute TD to beat the 3-5 Lions by 1. They blowout the lousy Vikings and a very overrated Tampa Bay and suddenly they're the '85 Bears reincarnated.

This is what has me worried as a Panther fan. Carolina's next few games are very winnable, though I am a bit worried about the game at Chicago. My hope is that Carolina is 9-2 the first time they play Atlanta. That should take some of the pressure off the game, though it is very possible that both teams will be 9-2 or 8-3 when they play for the first time and the division will certainly be on the line, but if Carolina can go into that game 9-2 with a playoff birth almost locked up already, hopefully it'll take some of the pressure off.

Is this a 2 horse race after this week? Carolina/Seattle? With a one game edge on the rest of the division and Atlanta/Tampa playing each other next week, Carolina at Chicago is a critical game for the Panthers. Beat the Bears and I think it's time to start talking about bye weeks and home field throughout the playoffs in Carolina.

11-13-2005, 09:37 PM
Not many demons left for the Seahawks to overcome during the rest of the regular season. They've managed to overcome a lot of the problems that have plagued them in the last few years, now they just have to win a playoff game. Hopefully one taking place in Seattle after a bye week.
As far as beating teams you should, thus far we've lost on the road to Jacksonville (5-4) to start the year and in Washington to the Skins (6-3). They've scored at least 30 points 5 times this year and actually beat up on the bottom feeders (Houston, Arizona twice) rather than playing down to their level. Finally won after the bye for the first time since Holmgren got here and after today, swept the Rams.
Of course, being a Seahawks fan I'm already scared of a let down next week when they go into San Fran, but if they go in there and beat them the way they should, there is no reason this team should be anything worse than 12-4 (@ SF, Giants, @ Phi, SF, @ Ten, Ind, @ GB) with their schedule.
Here's hoping that the injury bug will leave us alone from here on out and that Jackson (going to be fun watching the offense when he gets back), Sharper and Tubbs all get back in the lineup soon.

No, Carolina winning at Chicago should not lead to any discussion of home field. For one, the Tampa/Atlanta winner is still only one back. Carolina loses and they end up in a tie with that winner. Granted, if that winner happens to be Tampa, then Carolina is still effectively ahead due to head-to-head. Even so, it's still a long way to the end of the year.
At this point, home field is Seattle's to lose. Their remaining schedule is a complete joke aside from Indianapolis. They have San Francisco twice, Tennessee, and Green Bay, four games against three teams that are 2-7. They also get the Giants at home and get a reeling Philly team who may be 4-5 after tomorrow night. At the very least they should be getting a first round bye.

Of course, I also can see the Seahawks getting bounced out of the first round of the playoffs again.

Agreed. This is why I picked Seattle as well. Arizona, St. Louis, San Fran is an easier slate than Atlanta, Tampa Bay, New Orleans - in my opinion.
At this point, though, none of these teams are dominant. I could realistically see any one of 6 or 7 teams representing the NFC in the Super Bowl

Seattle is finally starting to fire on all cylinders. Atlanta faltered against GB (to be honest, GB played a damn good game) and NYG stumbled against a Vikings team they should have beaten. There really isn't a runaway team, but Seattle looks the most dominant right now, closely followed by Carolina. Could the South get three playoff teams? Maybe...

I don't know that the South can get three teams with the East being equally competitive. Right now, it's 7-2 Carolina, then 6-3 Tampa, 6-3 Atlanta, 6-3 New York, 6-3 Dallas, and 5-4 Washington. Two of those six will be division winners and two of them will be Wild Cards. I think it'll be one from each, if only because the NFC South still has a lot of division games to play and that should start bouncing at least one of the three teams out of the mix. Among Carolina-Tampa-Atlanta, only the first Carolina-Tampa game has been played. The remaining five games in the round robin are over the last seven weeks. Between Giants-Dallas-Washington, they've already round-robined once, so they only have three games against one another over the rest of the season. As such, they can beat on others to improve their record heading down the stretch.

1. Seattle
2. NFC South Champ (Carolina/Atlanta)
3, NY Giants
4. Da Bears
Wild Card 1: Carolina/Atlanta
Wild Card 2: RedskinsNot bad. TB's surprising surge and Atlanta's complete collapse kept me from getting very, very close to nailing it.

Hehe. True.
Hey, I'll make you a lame "bet". If the Lions lose to the Falcons, I'll change my sig to "Go Falcons!" for one week. If you lose, you have to change yours to "Go Lions" for a week. :)I forgot about this. :D

Well, if he doesn't change his sig manually, maybe some  mod can change his user profile title to "Go Falcons" for a week.

I didn't expect Carolina to become schitzophrenic down the stretch. Play abysmally one week, awesome the next. They can do damage in the playoffs if they can pull it all together for more than one game at a time, but I don't know if they can right now...
