A mate of mine noticed that when I was sitting tying my shoelaces before we were going hiking, one side of my back was a lot higher than the other - he described it as a lump, took a photo with his digicam - but it was more of a case of one side appearing swollen above the bump of the line of the spine for whole length of the back, the other side being lower (i.e. normal). I'd been feeling something in my back for a while - kinda like a muscle pull/strain but without the pain, if that makes any sense.
So I went to the docs, and she basically just ran her fingers down my spine, said - 'yep, you;ve got a curve out to one side towards the top, and a curve back in towards the base of the spine. It's a twist in the spine, it's called scoliosis, it's fairly common, don't worry about it.' Apparently the 'lump' is the muscles in my back being squeezed together, but where the spine twists inwards, the muscles don;t have the normal room, and therefore are pushed up.
All of this is cool - not a problem: makes sense. But what's worried me a little is that I looked up scoliosis on the web, and it makes it sound like something that is not fairly common, and is a degenerative condition that can cause problems.
Just looking for some opinions on this, and if I should go to see anybody else about it, if I can do anything about it myself, or if my GP was right and I should forget about it. Some of my worries have been increased because this week for a couple of days I have had an ache/pain in my back. Anything you can offer would be appreciated. Ta.
