If you had to pick one aircraft as your favorite, which would it be?

For me, there is no greater CAS plane then the A-10 Warthog. I love the way it looks, and flys.

I've always thought the A-10 looks pretty damn cool myself. 40 years old, and it still makes the kids run into the backyard to catch a gander at them when they're taking off from Dover AFB.

Yeah, I got see some cool footage of them in live action and not just a training exercise. It was some pretty gruesome, but cool at the same time.

The first time I rode on during a "live fire," I had to actually use one of those baggies. The damn thing literally goes sideways when it fires. I was so green after I got off it that I swore that I wouldn't ride on one again during a "live fire." Few months laters, I was back on one again. :D

I know the Spitfire is the one that got all the credit, but the older, stubby little Hawker Hurricane is the one I like. Not as quick and agile as a spitfire, but harder. Without them the Battle of Britain wouldn't have been won.

Hey I once read a tale, posted on a message board by a purported former B-52 pilot, He indicated that it was not an uncommon occurence during Vietnam for a B-52 pilot to find his feet on the instrument panel to gain leverage pulling back the Yoke. The personal example he gave was while avoiding a Surface to Air Missle, he said when one was inbound and capable of hitting you, the avoidance procedure was to dive into it. The resulting "pulling up" was a rather traumatic experience for both the pilot(feet on the console, and such) as well as the plane.

In any case, one of the posters on the board called "BS" on him, and I have ever since wondered if such a scenario was possible/likely.

I don't know if this was true throughout the war, but I believe that initially the Stuka was only configured as a dive bomber. I think the Messerschmit ME-109 was the primary Luftwaffe air-to-air combat fighter.

I was designed to only be used as a dive bomber. It did not operate very well if you did not have air superiority.

The problem was Hitler wanted the ME262 to be a bomber and keep terror raining on London. So it was back to the drawing board. The Me-262 showing up in quantity as a fighter is one of the great "what ifs" of WWII.

Also, the FW-190 was the best prop fighter the Germans had. I still snigger when I see the name Focke-Wulf. Is there a 10-year old anywhere in the world who doesn't love that name?

The JU87 Stuka was a slow plane that was utilized well in the blitzkrieg era, but was obsolete almost immediately. the air sirens are the Luftwaffe's signature sound, of course. They were designed to terrorize and did the job nicely. The Luftwaffe never developed a replacement ground attack plane. With air superiority, the later versions of the JU87 made an excellent tank buster (the A-10 Warthog role), but the Germans rarely had air superiority after 1943 on any front.

They tried making some of the 262's into Tank Busters too by mounting I believe a 50mm cannon on the front.

Lots of what-ifs for WWII.. probably why I like reading alternate history for that time period.

With air superiority, the later versions of the JU87 made an excellent tank buster (the A-10 Warthog role), but the Germans rarely had air superiority after 1943 on any front.Discussions I've seen on battlefront.com (being somewhat related to the CM games) suggest that nobody really had any significant success with close air support during the war.
