It's actually very popular, although I've never tried it. There are various reasons that I don't want to get involved with it, but if enough FOFC people wanted to play together, that would probably get me started.

i'm still reading everything you can do with it. it's immense. and free.
obvious there are some premium modes that allow you to do more, but this seems to be so huge of a game. insane.

I like the general concept of it. Judging from what I've heard, though, the place has an unimaginable number of cliques and factions, and some of them actually have quite a bit of power. I know some people around here think that SkyDog is a little touchy on the "penalty box button." Generally, what I've heard is that the powerful people at Second Life are quicker on a button than Ken Jennings (the guy who won on Jeopardy! all those times).
To everybody who's thinking about trying this, just keep in mind that you may be asked to "behave" even if you feel that you've done absolutely nothing wrong. All it takes is a complaint from one person from a certain group, and you might be in trouble.
Again, this is just what I've heard from several people.

in my version of second life, i wouldn't wear pants. i'd log into message boards and post NSFW pics, i'd even go so far as to not "hxxp" NSFW links. i'd roll with a big posse and kick people off their seats on the train. i want to toss rocks over highway overpasses and see if i can hit the windshields of cars.

Let's think this through a little bit. If this is a MMORPG where the hook is that you get to be a total bad-ass and mess with people, with whom would you mess?
Dropping rocks on cars is fun, but not if everyone on the game is standing on a bridge with a rock and no one is driving. Who would choose to play the defensless neighbor that people kick in the nuts on a regular basis?
Wouldn't the game just devolve into people walking around trying to stab and shoot each other? There would be no order against which to react. Being anti-social is only fun if there is a social to anti.
gottimd
11-15-2005, 01:52 PM
I bet you this idea has been thought of and actually put into design stage, but the sad thing is, is that the game would probably be blamed for so many murders/deaths/acts of violence. They should make the game with tons of disclaimers.

Well the universe would have simulated characters as well, that go about their daily life that the computer controls and as they die, they are replenished as well. And each has their own temper/morals/violence threshold as well. That way, if you continously attack/murder/rape/grope innocent bystanders, you may get to a simulated character that was like the Michael Douglas character in that movie I am drawing a blank on the title now.

you would get the benefits of being a law abiding citizen. you stay out of jail you get a good job, a good salary to afford the nicer things in life. Stay in school, graduate your avatar unlocks "creativity" bonuses, like being able to customize your appearance so you look like Johnny Good Guy. you get to own property. you get to walk into stores and not be escorted out. you could fly on airplanes to travel aroun the sim world because you wouldn't be on a list.
HardcoreSecondLife (nice name, albion) just has an avenue for people who want to operate outside of those benefits. your character wouldn't ever be able to have a job, make money legally. perhaps the only way that an anti-social person could be reindoctrinated back into society would be to do "good citizen quests". go to a "good citizen NPC" and get your good citizen meter back up. everytime you do something good you unlock more and more of the things that the good citizens have. in order to keep certain objects you have to maintain a certain level of "goodness" on your good citizen meter. once you start doing bad things your meter goes down: you wouldn't want to be wanted by the police because you couldn't ever walk into the bank to get your money, you'd be spotted. so then you'd be forced to keep your money on you at all times and you run the risk of being jacked by other anti-socials.
those are just some ideas. i want to play HardcoreSecondLife now.

I agree with HA on the other options. You could also set up the role/job of police officer to be available to human players. Arresting and sending to trial those engaged in criminal behavior could lead to higher pay, promotions, bonuses, etc.
Because nobody would want to waste time on a jury, those would be computer players. But there are probably people out there diseased enough to want to be attorneys. Or instead of a jury it could be open to a vote. 12 random players "living" in the area are required to vote and are sent a summary of the trial information.
There are ways around it. I would lean to staying clean in such a game. The organized crime elements would be huge, though. New players that want to take a risk for connections and quick buck would be doing the illegal grunt work.

awesome idea about being police. i hadn't thought of that and actually would consider going over to the Good Side to be able to be a bounty hunter.
everyone loves bounty hunters.
my friend and i had sketched a B movie together (that we may or may not make one day) and the big climatic line in the movie would be "Oh My God - Troy is an intergalactic bounty hunter?!?". oh man...we had so much fun using our "we're making a B movie and wanted to know if you girls would be in the movie" routine in bars. you wouldn't believe how many numbers we got this one time, it was like casting a net into the sea and pulling out many fish. we were gonna have a dog named Foamie who, you guessed it - foamed at the mouth - in the movie. i have to nudge him and complete this project.
