Sega Signs With Digital River For Online Distribution
Sega of America has announced that e-commerce company Digital River has signed a deal to manage the online sale and delivery of select Sega PC game titles. These games will be available for purchase from Sega's website, plus hundreds of online retail, content and portal sites in the Digital River oneNetwork online sales channel.

Based on the e-commerce agreement, Digital River built and recently launched Sega's online store, featuring games such as Virtua Fighter, Eastside Hockey Manager 2005 and The House of the Dead. This move shows the increasing importance of digital delivery to the PC game retail market, as also evidenced by Electronic Arts' recent announcement of its digital game delivery system.

Select Sega games, including The House of the Dead 2 and Virtua Squad 1 and 2, among others, also will be available for sale and download through Digital River's oneNetwork online sales channel. oneNetwork offers Digital River clients the opportunity to generate increased visibility and incremental sales for their products through indirect sales programs.

"Online distribution presents growth opportunities for Sega and we are poised to bring leading-edge games into that channel," said Chris Olson, director of Web for Sega of America, Inc. "Digital River's oneNetwork will allow us to quickly and easily expose our games to a very large audience of consumers that shop on popular, high-traffic online retail sites."

"We felt that Sony, though releasing music CDs containing spyware that left end users vulnerable to hackers, really got out in front of us in the all-important business of bulloxing up customers' computers," said Chris Olson, director of Web for Sega of America, Inc. "Digital River's oneNetwork will allow us to quickly and easily make up that gap with Sony while leaving a trail of digital devastation in our wake that will soon become the industry standard.".

Yes. Not sure. You'd have to ask those that are playing the digital version of Football Manager 2006, which is using DR technology.

When I saw that SEGA was using DR, it certainly pushed me to use Trymedia to buy EHM2005.

I ran into trouble buying a piece of development software through them at work. No fun.

Okay, I don't believe I've ever heard of Trymedia before. Googled 'em up, still not quite sure what they are.

From the way you said it, and then from looking at the site, I'm guessing that they're serving as some sort of "cut-out" in the licensing process or something?
As in, they deal with the licensing stuff & then you're buying an already licensed & ready-to-go copy of the game from them?

Or are they just another online store & I'm totally reading too much into this?

I say all of us Minnesota-based FOFers should rise up and march to their building and take a community shit on their desks. We must stop the tyranny!

They were the initial company used by SI to get the demo of EHM2005 out worldwide. They also offer other products, but this is the only one I've looked at. I would still prefer ViaTech, but the Trymedia people returned an e-mail of my questions about their licenses rather promptly, to the point I felt I could use them for my purchase. The process of registering the product is rather painless. Only time and many users experiences will give us a true indication of their service. I just wasn't comfortable with DR given what I read here over the years.

We've had very little problems with the Trymedia version this year. And the few problems that have arisen, have been dealt with quite fast by Duffy and the Trymedia people. You can still get your NHL EHM 2005 from either source (DR or Trymedia). The latter should be available on download.com (http://www.download.com/NHL-Eastside-Hockey-Manager-2005/3000-7471-10443645.html?part=dl-NHLEastsi&subj=uo&tag=button) to the best of my knowledge as well as on the SI site naturally.
