Hey guys,

I am trying to set up a wireless network. I have tried to set one up before but could not. I have the Internet connection set-up. However, on the labtop I testing it on it will not let me enter the entire key. I am using WEP encryption and I am trying to enter the key in wireless connection properties in the network connections.

Are you entering the "passphrase" or the generated WEP?

Did you try entering just the first X number of characters in the WEP? With some systems, that will work, truncating the WEP to the number of characters it wants.

Also, if your notebook wireless card has a limit on what level of encryption you can use (such as 64 bit or 128 bit), then make sure you setup your router with that level (and no more).

Also, just as a heads up, make sure that the key your computer is transmitting with (including the key number) is the one your router is set to want. My dad has a terrible history of doing silly things like telling router to use key 2 and then telling the computer it's key 1.

I'm around if you need more help.

Alright, I just got it working on my dad's labtop. Now I have to get it set up on an older version of XP that does not have the Wireless connection set-up wizard. Hopefully I can figure it out.

Alright, can someone give me instructions on how to hook up a computer to the wireless network that does not have the set-up wizard?

Alright, can someone give me instructions on how to hook up a computer to the wireless network that does not have the set-up wizard?

run the network set up wizard on your XP machine, it will give you an option to create a floppy disk on the "youre almost done" screen. create the floppy disk and you can put it into your other windows computer with 98, ME, or 2000 running and use the floppy to run the wizard on that computer. if you need more help just open the Help and Support on your start menu and do a search for network setup wizard and the help topic that explains what i said will come up.

Unfortunately, I don't have some good explicit instructions but I've used this site with pretty good results: http://www.wown.com/

Basically, for whatever system you are running, click on the link on the left under "articles and tutorials". Among the list will be titles such as Networking between Windows2000 and Windows95/98 (http://www.wown.com/articles_tutorials/w2kwin9x.html) with linked tutorials that are easy to follow. They aren't perfect but I've had pretty good results with them.

I bought a desktop USB Adaptor to be able to connect to the wireless network. I can connect to the network without a problem. But, the IP address is not the same as this one. In fact, I think it has my old IP address on there from when I am at school. Is this a common problem with wireless? Am I on the right path here with my thinking?

If you're connecting to a router, you'll end up getting a dummy IP, something like 192.168.1.0, 1 or 100. Without getting too technical, it's not your actual IP but what your router uses to identify you. The router is what gets the actual IP from your ISP and is splitting the signal among all things hooked up to it.

That makes sense. The problem I am having is that the network address is not being acquired. Can I manually fix the problem?

Another thing is that I can not entire my entire WEP kep. It only allows me to enter 13 characters. Could that be part of the problem?

Now GE can't make me anymore money playing poker until he gets this internet thing figured out. I know somebody here knows a little something about computers, so throw some advice out there. Thanks :)

That's good. Because the next question was going to be something to the effect of "what company" because getting stuff to work is very router specific.
