View Full Version : Medical Issue.. should I go into the doctor's?

First of all, I am not looking for specific medical advice, so that should put doctor's minds at ease ;) Just a general sense on if I should really be worried about this..
The last four-five days, I have not been able to keep food down at all. I can sip water (plain water, not the flavored stuff), and flat coca-cola, but anything else comes back up within maybe a half hour.. I'm talking crackers, bread, whatever.
I don't particularly feel bad (except when vomiting of course. ), but I am always exhausted.. I think I've slept roughly 35-40 hours over the last two and a half days, but even sitting up right wipes me right out after a while.. my body literally was shaking with fatigue last night, and I only had been up like four hours.
My folks want me to go and visit the doctor, and I've been fighting the idea, saying it's just a bug of somesort.. but usually they come and go quickly and wanted to get other people's ideas..

unexplained vomiting prolonged over several days = perfect reason to go to see doctor without much delay
(this is coming from someone who avoids doctors at all costs...)

Go. It may indeed be a bug or the flu, but if you've been sick that long you're not going to get over it without antibiotics. There's a reason why tens of thousands of people die from the flu every year -- they don't go to the doctor. You're at major risk of dehydrating, and if you're alone when you start to develop dementia you're not going to have the sense to go to the doctor or get help. A friend of mine nearly died when his kidneys shut down during a flu episode.
Go now.

Yeah, main thing I would be concerned about is dehydrating. If you are vomiting that much over several days you can find yourself in a bad spot pretty quickly.

You need to see a Doctor. Any condition like this that goes beyond 36 hours is something you need to seek some medical advice about. Some things that are easy to wipe out with intervention can kill you if they are allowed to get a tight grip on you.

first thing I thought about, dehydration. Go Foz, I see you're offline now, so you may be gone already ;)

Because this has lasted 4 or 5 days, I think you should go to the doctor's office tomorrow at the latest.

I'd be worried about dehydration as a possible problem, as others have said. Sounds like either food poisoning or a bug. Either way, I had similar symptoms after drinking some bad water, waited 2 days to see a doctor about it. I ended up having to go to the hospital for a day and a half or so, hooked up to an IV to stop dehydration (and letting the stuff run its course).
Hope you feel better!

IF this is a flu or any other virus, there is no antibiotic that will truly help it. There a few antivirals out there, but they don't work on the flu. Many people demand antibiotics for situations like this, when they are unwarranted and only create more drug resistant strands of bacteria. It's unfortunate that some doctors give into that "consumer pressure." However. I definitely think dehydration is a concern here, as well as potential other causes of this prolonged vomiting. I hope SirFozzie goes to the doc soon.

Not being employed in any sort of medical field, it sounds like some sort of food poisoning. The thought that kept coming to mind was salmonella, based on an outbreak case I had recently read about.

I'm home. Really wiped out, but they think it's somethin viral. I'm to sleep as much as my body can take, drink plenty of water just to help my body fight this off.. when I feel stronger, I'm to rebuild my endurance
Also on a strict regimine of vitamins.. they think the problem with being so exhausted all the time might be a deep iron deficiency.. but they won't know till the blood work comes back, which might be a day or two.

salmonella poisoning almost always runs its course in 24-48 hours at the most and very rarely requires any type of intervention by a doctor. i wouldnt even begin to speculate on what is wrong with fozzie, but i agree that the best place for him is the doctors/e.r. right now.

True. Most if not all types of food poisoning don't last 4 days, and I highly doubt this is food poisioning.

guess i should have kept reading....glad to hear you are ok, i would also start on some gatorade or powerade as soon as you can tolerate it...get vitamins and electrolytes back...its almost like drinking an IV.

Depends on how severe it is.
Symptoms are usually gastrointestinal and can include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and headache. These symptoms can be severe especially in the old and very young. Symptoms last generally up to a week, and can appear 8-48 hours after ingestion of the bacterium.
The bacterium induces responses in the animal that it is infecting and this is probably what causes the symptoms rather than any direct toxin.
Some individuals who get a salmonella infection may experience Reiter's syndrome, which may have long-lasting disabling effects such as arthritis.

Good idea on the gatorade, saldana.. I have that here.. drinking a cup of water or so an hour, just to avoid dehydration (one of the things the doc said is that being constantly sick when attempting to eat was dehydrating me)..
The worst of it, was the amount of I told you so's I absorbed from the folks on the way to the doc's office.
The best of it? I slept on the way home and didn't get a return helping ;0
Back to the couch I go..

if you can't hold down gatorade, I suggest getting some of that baby water. I think it has vitamins in it, or even some pedialyte, but that may be just like the gatorade. I would also cut the gatorade with water. Gatorade has quite a bit of sugar in it, and it might not agree with your stomach...

I don't remember what it was that I had -- it could have salmonella -- but when I was a teenager there was a virus going through our calves and I apparently picked up a strain from working with them. I was sick for a weak and lost about 20 pounds. One of the nastiest illness I ever had.

Thanks for the notes.. I'm gonna at least hold off on the gatorade till morning..
Right now I'm in between.. too tired to do anything useful, too awake to fall asleep. I hate it.
