Today I read the shocking news about the death of one of the best players of my favourite pro sports team, FC Utrecht. I'm over the early shock, I've known it for about 14 hours now, but I'm still feeling weird about it. The guy was barely two years older than me, it the highlight of his life. I feel especially sorry for the wife and kid he leaves behind...

Article at SportsIllustrated.CNN.com:

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) -- FC Utrecht defender David di Tommaso died in his sleep at age 26. The cause of death wasn't immediately known, the soccer club said Tuesday.

"He ate dinner last night and went to bed as he usually did. He didn't complain of feeling ill," club doctor Frank van Hellemondt said.

The French-born Di Tommaso was voted the team's player of the year last season by fans. Di Tommaso, who had one goal this season, played in Sunday's 1-0 victory over Ajax.

He is survived by his wife and a daughter.

Shitty deal.

Something tells me that if I checked the data issues forum over at SI, I could find the same news.

By the way, unlike the Associated Press seems to think, he leaves behind a son instead of a daughter.

Very sad. It is always shocking to hear about presumably fit people dying so young.

FWIW, the latest news is that Di Tommaso died as his heart suddenly stopped to beat (I don't know the correct medical translation). The theory the doctors right now have is based on Di Tommaso having had irregularities in his heart beat, which didn't show up at the medical examination when he was signed by the team.

Incidentally, the club announced to retire the #4 jersey USA sports style. Nobody will ever wear #4 again for the first team. Somehow, it makes me want to have a #4 jersey with his name on my back now.

I failed to mention that his wife is pregnant of their second child.

I read someone say, this happens all the time, every day, but I'm kinda happy I don't have to hear this stuff every day.
