View Full Version : ??? Solecismic Release Date Timeline

Just to add some curiousity/speculation/excitement to the next Solecismic title release date. This is by far the longest development time to date. Note: There is a good chunk of that which was not used for development (relocating/house hunting/new baby/etc).

Project - Date - Development Time

Freedom Day - Feb 98
FOF1 - Sep 98 - 7 months+
FOF2 - Aug 99 - 11 months
Interlude - EA Sports - FOF2k1, FOF2k2, FOF Online (cancelled)
TCY - July 01 - 18 months
FOF4 - Oct 02 - 15 months
FOF2k4 - Nov 03 - 13 months
Current Project - 25 months...

Personally, I think the long development cycle is a good bet that it's not FOF5 or TCY2, but the downtime for the family life improvements obviously throws a wrench into that speculation as well.

EDIT: Fixed Title to show ??? and avoid confusing people thinking there is a release date...

I wouldn't rule out a new football game. If there is a major recoding going on to include feature(s) that would be very beneficial to the franchise I could see why it was taking so long.

There could be a major restructuring of the file structure in the game to allow for importing of careers/leagues from a previous version of the game to a new version. I would suspect that would take a very long time to implement with the way things are coded.

This is all speculation on my part of course.

I suspect he will release it when he is ready to. I expect something like this... He annouces the project he is working on. Then maybe the same day says that it is availible for purchase. Of course a try before you buy demo.

Or my second theory is he is working with a publisher who controls when to release the game. And since he is getting paid or has already been given part of his money up front he is not in money trouble and is just waiting it out.

I think moving back and forth buying houses kinda proves that he's not eating Ramen 24/7.

I think we'll get an annoucement to what it is the week before it goes on sale. Someone will hack the download URL (damn pirates) to get the dummy file they are testing the download with early and we'll get the game on a friday.

I think he already released a new game, but is trying to keep it a secret from us morons.

Has anyone seen that stats thing he has on his site? One has to figure he didn't do it for shits and giggles. Pretty impressive stuff...

Didn't he say at one point that he spent some time doing research that ultimately couldn't be used? I'm sure he was ambiguous about what he meant, whether itwas for a new game that didn't work out, or that the market wasn't good for, etc. But I recall him posting that vague comment at some point. That certainly could have thrown him off track, along with the baby/moving issues.

He has had that there for awhile I thought. Maybe even before 5.1D was released. But there is more statistical analysis than before.

I choose not to post as I am already on Jim's "Naughty List" and do not want a lump of coal for Christmas from the big guy. :)

No, told everyone that TCY 2 would be harder to find this Christmas than Tickle Me Bono.

I am probably asking to get slammed by some of you old timers on the board but why are people under the assumption that agame is in the works. I mean I was waiting for Brian of FBCB to make a new version of his games which were in the works he said and then he went out of business. I am not saying this is what happened here just to get hopes up and discuss in detail about a product that could never be.

I don't even know what we know. I thought, judging from the main web site, that Jim created these games so he could get away from the day-to-day hassle of working in an office. Now - from what I understand, he has a job in the "real world". When did this change?

FWIW, he has mentioned before that Solecismic is not dead and that future releases will happen (though he has not said what those releases will be).

I thought people were just joking/speculating about a new job since he's moving?

I don't even know how that rumor got started, but let me put it to rest. No, we are not moving to Michigan for a job offer. We are moving to be closer to family.

I've worked on several projects over the last couple of years. I don't think most of them will ever be viable products. But it's good to gain any experience.

I have also literally spent months designing every piece of our new house, which hopefully breaks ground in about a month. Fortunately, I don't have to do as much once that happens, since I am not talented in construction. The new home has a office specifically designed to house Solecismic Software.

Breaking ground in January, in Michigan? Is that even possible? ;)

Just kidding. I suppose the timing means there's a very good shot you'll be in the house in 2006.

My Dad designed their current house from scratch, and found the whole process very fulfilling. He did spend a fair amount of time "minding" the contractors, but it probably helps that he used to do commercial real estate development, so is familiar with construction. If you're interested in getting any advice, shoot me a PM and I'll put you in touch with him.

Anyway, good luck and enjoy watching your new house come together!

It is good to be wanted. I hope for the next 25 years people are asking what Jim's next game is going to be.

Knowing Jim the way we do I think we can all undrstand his polcy when it comes to new releases. However, based on what he said above I think the current quote on his web site could use some clearing up...

"What's next for Solecismic Software?

At this time, we're not ready to release information about our next project. Look for news releases on this web site later in 2005. "

Seeing that the time frame window is getting much smaller, and that Christmas is just around the corner, I think it wold be in Jim's and hs customers best interest to know just what s happening here.
