View Full Version : Where to buy old games? (Looking for Gothic)

Thanks in large part to Buccaneer, I gave Gothic 2 a try about 2 months ago. I didn't like it at first as I died too much, but in the past few weeks I've become hooked on it. So much so, that I want to buy the original Gothic. I've tried looking at Gogamer's site, ebgames, gamestop, amazon. The only place that had a copy was Amazon, and that seller wanted 80 dollars for it!
I'm wondering if anyone has an idea where to get the game for a more reasonable price? What sites are good for old games?
Thanks.

None at Compusa according to their website, and we don't have Fry's near here.

The Underdogs is a good place to find old games. The only link they list to buy Gothic is Contact Piranha Bytes, though. I went to their online shop and only saw the German version of the original Gothic for sale.

Yeah, I went to their site and only saw the German version as well. I hate using eBay, but that might be my only real choice.

Thanks! I've at least heard of them (but forgot to check their site as I rarely have gone to it.) It seems like it is worth a shot :)
Edit: Unfortunately, it appears to be out of stock there. Thanks anyway.

-zumsThat might be the only way for me to get it. I'll gladly trade an old game or pay cash if anyone has Gothic and is willing to part with it.

Also might want to check the forums http://gothic.rpgdot.com
With all of our recent conversations, I wished I could give you mine but we still have 3 people here still playing it once it a while.

I wouldn't think of taking/buying your game. From our conversations, I can tell it is still one of your favorites. I'll check that forum, plus I might have one other good lead.

I haven't used them in several years, but they were reliable enough when I did use them. They've been around a good long time.

EF just told me that a copy of Gothic 1 went for $75 on eBay. I think that's pretty good for an older, out-of-print game.

Yep, I'm not willing to pay that much, but if any of are looking to sell a copy of Gothic, I will pay well :)

Sorry....I didn't go that far into the purchasing phase to check that.

EF, I'll try and scrounge up my copy sometime here soon. I won't be playing it again, I have enough Gothic to tide me over with playing through all of Gothic 2 + Night of the Raven right now. I really have no clue where it is now, as I haven't messed with it since my move from Utah, so it might be a no go. I'll try and find it though. I had no idea it was that hard to get a hold of now.
Bucc, you need to go out and grab Night of the Raven if you haven't already, it's good stuff so far, but it definitely makes things tougher as well. It can be very painful. I don't think you can really find it standalone here anywhere, but I ordered Gothic 2 Gold which has the original and the expansion for 14.95 off of Amazon, well worth it as it packs a lot of extra hours into the first chapters. This is my first run through as a Mage, hell I'd actually completely missed even seeing the Monastery for the longest time in my original game.

Calis, I'm ordering 2 copies for Christmas so I don't have to fight with the boys on playing. :)

I'm getting the Gold Version as well. I want to play all of the games in this series. If you find your version of Gothic, Calis, I'd be very grateful. If not, thanks for looking anyway :)

I think I bought Gothic 2 for $10 a few months ago, right before I left New Orleans. I haven't even opened the box yet. Maybe I should, since you guys make it sound like so much fun!

Well we should clarify there might be a short time that it is more painful than fun. :) It's pretty unforgiving for starting out, but it's well worth fighting through the initial barrier.
Wish I had more time to play the thing now, only a few more weeks until some time off.

I almost gave up on Gothic 2, because I died so much at first. I still die some, but I save frequently. However, if you can get past that early difficulty level, it is a very fun very interesting game.
Coop,
If I haven't found a copy from another source, I'd definitely be interested in yours. I'd pay you well for it too, since it clearly has value (as I noticed on recent eBay auctions.)
Edit: By the way, good luck on finals and with your surgery, Coop.

I thought the same thing. The game at first is very hard. Once I broke into it, it got easier. Then my comp crashed on me, i lost my save game and I never went back to it. It's been about a year since I played it. Great game though.

Hmm. Maybe I'll dig into the game next week (if I can figure out which box I packed it in). I have a lot of free time at the moment, so if I die a lot at first, so be it. :)

After playing Gothic 1 for quite a while, I didn't have any trouble starting in Gothic 2. I guess I knew what to take on and what to avoid. However, I did find swinging the sword a little easier in 2 than 1. I remember when I started 1, it took a long time before I got the left-right swinging motion down.

It took me a while to figure that out in Gothic 2. I kept trying to primarily use forward swings which I rarely use now..

My local CompUSA has it in stock for 19.99. Since to me, that is still a bargain, I'm going to go pick it up tomorrow. I already know (despite only being about halfway through it the first time) that I want to play through Gothic 2 at least once more, and I'll play with the expansion next time (which is included in the Gold version.)
Edit: Of course, I'm still looking forward to obtaining Gothic (the original) so that I can play that as well.

How did the surgery go? Did you have a chance to look for it yet? I beat Gothic 2 last night, and am still looking for Gothic. I'd much rather pay you or someone else on here than a random person on ebay :)
