I was told that by a doctor when I was around 8 or 9 years old. They were supposed to take them out but I don't remember why it never happened. Anyways I guess I grew into them because although I have had doctors tell me that they are very large they don't see a need to take them out.

The doctors I have seen over the last several years have also admitted they do not like to take them out anymore for some reason. So if that is the general stance, I can't imagine how big yours would be to have to be taken out. That or I just always get whacky doctors. :D

Enjoy the painkiller.

I had mine taken out when I was 15. One of the most miserable experiences in my life. I dropped 20 lbs because my throat was so sore for so long that I just didn't want to eat. I wish they had taken them out when they were first giving me problems (12?).

Did he save them for you?

Didn't save them. Damn tonsils have been giving me problems since I was 7 or 8, much more so since I moved to Washington DC in 1996 and I get strep throat 3-5 time a year. My general practicioner keps saying "They're not too bad, they'll clear up". Well I finally said "Fark that" and went to an Ear Nose and Throat doctor. the ENT's eyes got real wide when he saw them and said "They need to come out, the sooner the better."

GOD BLESS PERCOSET!

My doc said the same thing to my mom when he took out mine. I was 22.

I had mine taken out when I was 15. One of the most miserable experiences in my life. I dropped 20 lbs because my throat was so sore for so long that I just didn't want to eat. I wish they had taken them out when they were first giving me problems (12?).I dropped 15 lbs. when I had mine out, because I more or less refused to eat or drink, unless it was force-fed to me. I didn't eat or drink much for at least 3 weeks after mine came out. Apparently they hurt a LOT more for adults to get out than for kids, and my ENT said that he had women patients say it was worse than childbirth in terms of pain (nevermind the CONSTANT pain, and the fact that it felt like people were simultaneously stabbing LARGE swords of fire in my throad AND my ears).

I also had problems with recurring bleeding (which is rare). Twice in the
first week and a half after mine came out I had to go to the ER because I was bleeding from the back of my throat, and both times they almost went back in to the OR to cauterize things and/or stitch things.

If my kids (whenever I have them, which means that first I need to find a husband, then I need to figure out if I'm able to have kids, then I need to have kids) have any inkling of needing their tonsils out when they're under 10, they're getting taken out then. That's not pain I'd wish upon anybody except perhaps Dick Vitale (see the thread about ESPN personalities :D).

I had a co-worker who echoed Kristin's sentiments. He was out of work for a week+ and couldn't talk above a whisper for another couple.

Sooooo how can I baby my tonsils? ;)

What I'd like to know is what is the allure of toenails that when you thought you saw that, you figured you'd read it?

That's kinda gross. :D

Got me, I've read it like 30 times today, glanced at the screen, thought I saw toenails. Think about posting some lame parody post, then see someone else thought they saw it too.

I must have a toenail fetish as well:D

The doctors I have seen over the last several years have also admitted they do not like to take them out anymore for some reason.I think they have some sort of role in the immune system and the system is weakened if the tonsils are removed.

I was just trying to figure out how one determines what it takes to have the worst toenails seen in years. It wasn't until shortly after I saw that the doctor was removing them from his neck that I re-read closely enough to figure it all out. :)

Ok... this one has me laughing hysterrically...

btw... what exactly causes one to have their tonsils taken out? General sickness... constant sickness... not sure I'd know..

Wow. Not to brag, but the doctor told me that mine were "the best tonsils I've seen in years". He took pictures, showed his colleagues, and then put me under sedation and violated me. Good times.
